In a recent controversy concerning corporal punishment in schools, a physical education instructor in Albany, Georgia was recently suspended, but not fired after physically punishing and abusing her student. Surveillance cameras caught Tracy Drayton in the act of dragging a kindergarten pupil across the gymnasium (“Tracy Drayton, Georgia”). This is a prime example of how corporal punishment can result in extreme consequences. Corporal punishment, an outdated and ineffective consequence, should be illegal across the United States.
Corporal punishment, also known as physical punishment, is any rebuking in which physical power is employed and expected to cause some extent of pain or distress to the victim. This can also include beating with any object, especially “belts, cords, and brushes.” Human rights-law also classifies corporal punishment as squeezing, hitting with hands and feet, slapping, yanking, jostling, flicking or pushing with enough power to harm the victim (Stephey 1). These definitions are quite controversial, considering there is no set of guidelines dictating what could cause injury or what qualifies as “too powerful” (“Global Progress”).
There is currently no national ban on corporal punishment in schools. Corporal punishment is illegal on the state level in public schools in 39 states and Washington D.C., with Illinois included. Corporal punishment is illegal in public and private schools in Iowa and New Jersey (“Global Progress”).

When describing a physical altercation between two adults, the term is assault and battery. Assault on an individual has more than immediate effects; the effects can last a lifetime in severe cases. In all fifty states, it is a crime to hit, strike or use corporal punishment in any deliberate manner towards any person over the age of eighteen. However, this law does not apply to physical force being used on minors. Spanking, whipping, and paddling are among a few common references to this form of punishment. Physically disciplining children has had many names over the years. No matter which term is used, corporal punishment has a negative impact on every party involved. It is a widely used, socially accepted method of discipline. “Approximately 94% of three and four-year old children have been spanked in the past year (Slade & Winssow 1321). Although spanking is a widespread practice, it is becoming more controversial. The negative effects of spanking greatly outweigh the benefits. Spanking is a socially tolerated view promoting abusive patterns, and has a negative psychological impact in teaching children that pain, fear, and confusion promote conformability.

The topic of whether parents should use corporal punishment has been debated for years, and it is illegal in the United States to use physical punishment; however, each state’s law on corporal punishment varies and all allow some form of physical punishment. New studies greatly question whether corporal punishment should be used when discipling children. Parents or guardians should not be allowed to use corporal punishment because it causes anti-social behavior, it increases aggression, and it causes cognitive problems.

On a student’s cell phone, a teacher is caught hitting students with a thick stick. He continually hits everywhere from the students’ hips to the head harshly without a hesitation. This video is opened to the public by a student in the class posting it on the Internet. According to the other students, they were punished because they skipped class when the school inspectors came. All the people who looked at it on the Internet were surprised to see this kind of behavior. Recently, we’ve heard a lot on the media about punishment by teachers in school. Some people agree with the teacher’s power to punish, claiming that it is a part of education. However, contrary to this opinion, I disagree with corporal punishment because physical punishment brings only temporary effects in correcting children’s behavior. Also, it can humiliate a child by insulting his or her personality and have a poor affect on their self esteem. Besides, physical punishment can be abused because there aren’t any concrete standards to regulate how much punishment is proper in disciplining.
Corporal punishment is defined as “an infliction of punishment to the body.” My primary reason for not approving corporal punishment would be that corporal punishment creates a negative reaction from the student’s perspective plus additional problems in the end. To discipline students in a way that will harm them into non-misbehavior is not the way to go. I claim that corporal punishment in public schools should not be permitted because it is barbaric, harmful, and in no way a method to solve personal problems.
