Marijuana is one of the hundreds of drugs that holds Americans in the bondage of addiction and causes harm to their health and well-being. Marijuana comes from the hemp plant called cannabis sativa and is the most commonly used illegal drug in the U.S. (Goldberg). Although marijuana has mostly been used as a drug to get high, physicians have recently discovered that marijuana can treat the symptoms of cancer and multiple sclerosis, relieve pain, and treat many minor ailments. Because of the rare healing effects of this drug, many states are working to legalize medical marijuana in their state, but there is much controversy over whether or not medical marijuana should be legalized. Although medical marijuana has been proven to relieve pain and treat the symptoms of many life-threatening illnesses, the harmful side effects, the possibility of addiction and Americans untrustworthiness causes medical marijuana to be an implausible healing agent. Marijuana, also known as weed, is smoked for the high, as well as for “nausea, glaucoma, appetite simulations, mucous membrane inflammation, leprosy, fever, dandruff, hemorrhoids, obesity, asthma, urinary tract infections, cough, anorexia associated with weight loss in AIDS patients, pain, and multiple sclerosis” (“Marijuana Overview Information”). Medicines to treat some of the listed ailments have not been found as of, yet so patients are suffering from pain and ongoing symptoms from their disease or illness. The only treatment for some of these ongoing symptoms and pain is medical marijuana. This is why medical marijuana is being pushed to be legalized in America. The “high” that users get from smoking marijuana relieves pain for a short period of time. Dr. Mark Ware tested cannabis (mar... ... middle of paper ... ...N.p. 2010. Web. 5 May 2014. . The legalization of marijuana is a smoldering topic that sparks a debate anytime someone brings up the controversial subject. It is listed on the top of the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) drug schedule listing as a controlled Schedule I substance. According to the DEA, “Schedule I drugs, substances, or chemicals are defined as drugs with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. Schedule I drugs are the most dangerous drugs of all the drug schedules with potentially severe psychological or physical dependence.” Yet, the United States has allowed 20 states to legalize it for medicinal purposes; and, two of those states are legally allowed to use it recreationally. That makes 40% of the country obtain a prescription, while the other 4% are stoners. Why such a discrepancy? Because someone always has to make the rules, while others are just trying to break them.

It has been shown that marijuana helps cancer, chemotheraps, AIDS, HIV, glocoma, muscle spasticity, and neurological disorders (www.drugpolicy.org). In recent years, many patients who experience chronic pain have turned to cannabinoids as way for pain management. Cannabis (also called marijuana)—from the plant Cannabis Sativa—for analgesic use is that the drug has been used both therapeutically and recreationally for thousands of years. Cannabis is used recreationally because of the euphoria that it produces (Campbell, 2007). Research focused on marijuana has increasingly indicated important connections to pain experience, including the use for the management of pain-related symptoms and medical illness. Cannabinoids can offer analgesic effects for pain related to medical disease, like cancer. It also can be useful for managing migraine pain. Lastly, marijuana has frequently been employed to manage pain-related symptoms, including nausea and vomiting (Zvolensky, 2011). Why keep those pricey bottles and boxes of drugs in our medicine cabinets which are worthless? New research suggests that marijuana is a medicine. This is a concern which should be addressed for the citizens of United States who have to fight for their medicine to feel better and ease their illness. This is why marijuana should be a medical option! Marijuana is a natural herbal plant which is often called pot, weed, MMJ, cannabis, bubble gum, green goddess and there are several other names that follows. It can be smoked, eaten and drank. There are few reasons why it should be a medical option such as it costs less, its chemical free, and last it helps with the side effects from other medicines and illnesses. Marijuana can relieve certain types of pain such as migraine headaches, anxiety, chronic back pain, arthritis, movement disorders, HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, glaucoma and epilepsy. In some medical cases, marijuana is prescribed by the doctors since the pain tolerance is too high. However, marijuana can be considered as less toxic than other medicines that are out there.
Although marijuana can be used as a pain reliever, it may cause new pain, even while taking other pain away. The psychological effects of weed may not be realized by the smoker until it is too late. Much like a cigarette smoker needs nicotine, a high will be something a “hash” smoker will run to, and in the future, it may become addictive for the smoker. As more states move to legalizing medical marijuana, more people will have access to the drug. Although some effects of smoking marijuana may help people with sickness, the other effects are too harmful to accept smoking marijuana as a medical practice. Marijuana is addictive and harmful and shouldn’t be distributed to anyone.
The controversy over the legalization of marijuana has been an important and seriously debated topic for many years. The way people look at marijuana and the use of it has changed drastically over the past few years. Marijuana used to look like any other harmful drug out there, no real purpose except for relieving stress. However, today many people see marijuana as an opportunity in the medical world. Unlike what has been thought for many past years, marijuana does actually have multiple good sides that people did not notice earlier. When used beneficially by doctors, marijuana can relieve certain types of pain felt by many patients with numerous injuries (Pros and Cons of weed). As many people already know today, marijuana relieves stress.
Marijuana can be a step in the right direction in diagnosing and treating many diseases. Medical Marijuana saves lives and helps patients deal and overcome pain due to diseases or disorders. Dr. Andrew Weil, founder and director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine, explained how marijuana can “relieve pain, nausea, and other debilitating effects of multiple sclerosis and cancer and the drugs used to treat them.” (Weil) Dr. Weil revealed how marijuana is able to target certain cancer cells without harming the healthy cells in order to help patients fighting for their lives. Dr. Weil is a supporter for the use of medical marijuana and declared “our current national policy is counter-productive and irrational.” (Weil) Currently, there are many doctors who have been and starting to advocate for the use of medical marijuana. In our advancing medical industry, we are faced with incurable diseases which ultimately can lead to a loss of life. Marijuana has been proven to help patients who suffer from pain by relieving their pain and relaxing their bodies. People must understand how marijuana is tremendously beneficial to all types of people in America whether it is used as medicine or a supplement to help people throughout their everyday lives. It is well regulated for patients who choose marijuana as a form of treatment. It is also relatively inexpensive compared to other drugs that can be very pricy. Researchers found that marijuana has the lowest risk of mortality and is safer than the commonly used alcohol and tobacco as well as the rest of the drugs in the study. According to research alcohol (which is legal in all 50 states) is approximately 114 times more dangerous than marijuana, which remains the only federally controlled substance that has never caused a death by overdose (Scientific Reports/ Washington Post). There is an opioid epidemic currently besieging the United States. A growing body of evidence suggests that cannabinoids can be effective in alleviating pain, either alongside or in place of opioids. Marijuana could serve as a safer option for some kinds of pain relief and could even help to reduce the number of people addicted to opioids.Medical marijuana uses the marijuana plant or chemicals in it to treat diseases or conditions.More than half of U.S. states and the District of Columbia have legalized medical marijuana in some form, and more are considering bills to do the same.
