Weapons in the workplace has been a legal issue in the business field for years. Many liability issues has risen that concerns employees’ rights and workplace safety. Laws have been passed at the state and federal levels that will allow United State citizens to carry concealed weapons, once they have received a concealed weapon permit. However, several businesses will not allow their employees to carry their weapons, may it be in their offices, on their person or in their vehicles. The purpose of this paper is to examine the laws and regulations that do not allow and do allow employees to bring weapons to work. I will also be examining the pros and cons of allowing employees to carry conceal weapons in the workplace. So that we may see how some companies are implementing their rules and regulations for concealed weapons carrying in the workplace, I have obtain a weapons policy from a local business. Concealed Weapons in the Workplace In the United States, many states have passed laws, which allow their citizens to carry concealed weapons. Policies to obtain the necessary permits for concealed weapons vary from state to state, and some of those policies are very lenient. For example, let us look at the laws and policies to obtain a concealed weapons permit in Illinois. Being a resident of Illinois, you must go to the local sheriff’s department of the county that you reside in with your Driver’s license or a State ID, along with two references. You will inform the clerk that you are interested in applying for a concealed weapon permit and then proceed to filling out whatever forms necessary. The fee for this is thirty to forty dollars and if you are a valid candidate, you will receive your permit in a few weeks. The permit ... ... middle of paper ... ...customers, be proactive, and always educate. As long as we understand the responsibility and are prepared, concealed carry is a practical way to defend yourself, love ones, and co-workers. Be aware of the laws of your state, it is important. It is important to know locations and venues, where it is always illegal to carry a gun. Individual states have their own specific regulations, and they are intended to “protect the best interest of every person” (Articlesfactory.com, 2013). There are two venues that guns are excluded from that is sporting events and school campuses. The misfire of a weapon in one of these venues, or threatening someone, or showing someone the weapon can cause a major panic. It is important to understand any and all ramifications of carrying a concealed weapon. Carry your concealed property properly, learn how if you do not know, get educated
Many Americans are now applying for a license to carry licensed concealed arms with them. The rate at which licenses are being approved is worrying. This development is concerning law enforcement authorities. Putting so many firearms at the disposal of the public is counterproductive to the gains that are being made on improving security and especially in the cities where incidences of gun crime and violence are on the rise.
In states that allow concealed carry there are also few restrictions on the places the firearm can be carried
Law abiding citizens should have the right to protect themselves against criminals. You are less likely to suffer an injury when attacked if you are carrying a handgun, as opposed to other methods of self-protection. The right to carry a concealed handgun is protected by the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The U.S. Constitution states “the right of the people to bear arms shall not be infringed” (ProCon.org 1).Carrying a handgun could keep a lot of people from being killed during a public shooting incident. Concealed handguns protect citizens from violent crimes such as burglary and robbery. Most criminals are armed and you don’t have much of a chance of survival if you are not carrying a
Concealed carry; should we promote or discourage it? Many who are not supportive of the law, do not understand the pros that come from the ability to carry a concealed handgun. They overlook all the good that comes from the law, they seem to dwell on the very few cons, and do not wish to consider the great pros that can and often do come from the concealed carry law. Guns, though scary to some, provide those who carry with a sense of protection, as one must take into consideration the good that the law does for the people of America, and the power that is granted while carrying a gun.
Everyone has had that time in their life where they feel that they would be safer if they had some sort of protection, concealed carry is a great option for protection. Over the years it has been growing in popularity, more and more people are going out and getting their concealed carry permit. With more and more people going out and getting their permit, some may view it as dangerous, while others feel it is a necessity. Concealed carry is essential because, it allows added protection, has certain restrictions that the person must meet, and if guns are handled properly they are not as dangerous
Since 2007 the amount concealed gun permits have increased from 4.6 million to 12.8 million. Even last year the number of permits issued had increased by 1.7 million. As a result of more permits robbery, violent crimes, and murder rates have plummeted. The number is most likely to increase to since that gun permits are now not required to carry a gun in eight states. Citizens should be able to carry a
Accompanying the high margin for human error, untrained citizens can use firearms in unlawful ways. According to a violence policy center analysis of news reports, CCW (carrying a concealed weapon) permit holders have killed at least 14 law enforcement officers and 622 private citizens since May 2007 (LCPGV 1). Most if not all of those deaths could have been avoided if there was no concealed carry law. People now need to be informed of the facts, and not some old false reasoning. What holds many people back from seeing the truth is the disadvantageous annotation that comes with change. Sure, this country was built on people who rose up and overthrew the unethical government with their own weapons, but that is not what is being threatened; the right of a militia and to own firearms is written in the second amendment. What does need to change, however, is the idea that the constitution is flawless and covers all things. Although the constitution does lay very stable ground rules for a country to be governed, laws are meant to change with new inventions and ideals. New models of more and more deadly firearms are created everyday, each being deadlier that the latter. What could be called into the question is not the banning of the weapon, but the banning of the deadliness of the weapon. New guns can be specially constructed to wound a
In fact, five states, California, Florida, Illinois, New York, and South Carolina think that is better to keep conceal carry over open carry. Concealed carry is different then that of open carry. Both laws let a person carry a handgun out in public around other people, but with concealed carry the user must hide the handgun underneath some form of clothing making it invisible to others. It could be placed in a multiple of places underneath a coat, vest, at the lower back, hip, leg, or on one side of the rib cage. Open carry only lets you carry the firearm on the side of your hip. Also, each person must get a license or permit showing the proper use of the firearm and pass a background check. This lets only people who are not hostile with experience of a firearm the right to carry in public. Making sure that not only is the user safe from the firearm, it makes sure that citizens around them are not in
This is caused because the more guns there, are the less violence there is. Dangerous criminals will think twice about robbing someone that has a gun. A victim with a gun is no longer a victim because they can not fight back against the attacker. Therefore, they can save their lives and save lives of the public which need help at that moment. Lott states, “The estimated annual gain from 1992 from allowing concealed handguns was over $5.74 billion” (House Report). This states that when a decline in violence goes down the amount of money goes up. Concealed guns can only benefit everyone in multiple ways. Concealed weapons can help create the feeling of safety and reduce violence. No one wants to live in
As of 2013, all 50 states allow concealed carry of handguns (Concealed Carry Reciprocity Maps), although a few states don’t require a permit and the standards for licensing vary greatly from state to state. In the U.S. most states are “Shall Issue” states. This means they will grant anybody a permit that meets certain guidelines such as being 21 or older and not having any felony convictions, a history of mental illness or domestic abuse. A handful of other states are “May Issue” states. In these other states, such as Maryland, a permit will only be issued if you can prove you need it. This can be a large obstacle and these states will usually only issue permits to people in the public eye, wealthy individuals that are well-connected or business owners frequently transporting large sums of cash (Concealed Carry Reciprocity Maps). Although the requirements and standards are different wherever you may live, one thing holds true- concealed carry permit holders are rapidly growing. The market for handgun training, concealed carry courses and smaller, more concealable handguns have opened up. When concealed carry was first gaining popularity there were two very different schools of thought. Some thought that violent crime would decrease, as criminals would fear the everyday person that just may happen to be armed. Others thought that having people carrying around concealed handguns in public would lead to an increase in violent crime with people losing their temper and shooting each other. When analyzing the data and crime trends, it is clear that with this influx of concealed carry permit holders there has not been a corresponding increase in violent crime.
Concealed carry holders reduce crime by having a firearm active within a moment’s notice to defend against all sorts of threats. The definition of defense is the action of defending from or resisting an attack. Open carry refers to when you have a firearm holstered and the handle of the weapon is visible from two or more sides. Concealed carry is covered by an article of clothing or garmentMany rapes and robberies could be prevented just by the presentation of a firearm (debate). That is very true when someone is staring down the barrel of a .45 cal 1911. Publicly carrying a concealed firearm is permitted for non-Law Enfo...
Opponents of concealed weapons argue that increased gun ownership leads to more violent crimes as well as mass shootings. They contend that people carry concealed guns because of the paranoia and the fear of crime. They state that public safety should be left to qualified people, such as police officers with expert training. In fact, the
Concealed pistols have always been an issue that the public wants to know more and more about. Most people who were born and raised in the outdoors agree fully on the legality of a concealed weapon, whereas people who were born in big cities where they did not hunt, shoot guns, or have a firearm in their house do not. This is a very large and argued about cultural issue. I personally am all for concealed carry of a firearm. There are many reasons for this such as personal defense, sense of safety, and the protection of others around me. There are some questions that are raised about the carrying of a concealed weapon such as “what states can I travel in with my firearm?”, “what is the process of applying for a concealed carry permit?”, and “can I enter a weapon free zone to stop a shooter?”. Concealed carry has proven able to reduce crime and lower the casualty rate of a shooter who enters a public area with the intent to kill as many people as possible. Some people argue that concealed weapons are just carried by people who are looking for trouble and that you can obtain a pistol without a background check. This will also be explored and explained thoroughly.
“Their best defense against injury is to put no defense and give them what they want” (Kates). Critics may argue that concealed handguns are not an effective form of self defense. To the contrary, robbery and assault victims who used a gun were less likely to be attacked or suffer injury, “Neither a martial art skills nor chemical sprays provide a real option for victims faced by attackers who are stronger or armed” (Kates). People feel safer when they carry a concealed weapon because they feel that criminals will avoid attacking them. Citizens want to conceal carry a handgun because every day there are dangerous individuals who prey on the weak. In addition to that, concealed handguns are an effective non-lethal form of self defense a majority of the time. Gary Kleck from the Federal Bureau of Investigation “estimated that, 2 million to 2.5 million victims annually use handguns to repel criminal attackers” (Kates). The surprise of being armed is the advantage for the victim, which the victim has the disadvantage of knowing the time and place of being attacked. Concealed carry actually provides protection to citizens that do not carry because the criminals are not sure who is able to defend themsel...
