I’m here today to discuss, compare, and contrast the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, two of the best rock and roll bands from the 1960s. During the British Invasion, both of these bands had a lasting impression worldwide inspiring many of the current artists today. Although both bands are similar, they have many differences.
The Beatles were formed in London and consisted of four prime members: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison. When they first came out from Liverpool to America, they gave a clean look toward people by wearing suits and trimmed haircuts. The Rolling Stones, also formed in London later on, also consisted of four prime members in the beginning: Mick Jagger, Ronnie Wood, Keith Richards, and Charlie Watts. Throughout their career, they let they hair grow long and wear whatever they wanted including concerts, giving off the “I don’t care” look. The Beatles gave a clean impression, perceived as perfect school boys while The Rolling Stones gave a dirty image to the public and didn’t care about other’s opinion and rebelled against “the man”. As t...
The Beatles are an iconic English rock band and are widely regarded as the “foremost and most influential act of the rock era” (Unterberg). Formed in Liverpool in 1960, the Beatles were comprised of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, with Stuart Sutcliffe on bass guitar in January and Pete
The Beatles and the Beach Boys are two of the most recognized, well-known and most popular musical acts of the 1960’s right through to the 1970’s. I will be focusing on the group acts rather than solo performers such as John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison of the Beatles, who took their own stylistic approach to their music after the Beatles’ separation. Each group’s arrangement and use of instruments classify them as part of the overall associated sound and typical subject matter of songs in the 1960’s, yet remain different enough to distinguish between each group’s desired sound.
British rock ‘n’ roll began in the 1950’s and it wasn’t until the 1960’s when The Beatles heightened the start of the British Invasion. The band consisted of eclectic individuals such as John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. The Beatles’ group dynamic was founded on team-based operations as well as two-way innovations such as problem-to-solution and solution-to-problem of team building. However, like every group, internal and external interaction arose creating competition, which lead to both positive and negative conflict.
America’s defenses were breached and hysteria gripped the nation. The invasion had begun. However, the sounds of sirens did not fill the streets to warn against nuclear attacks, nor were there warnings to stay indoors. Instead the youth of America rushed into the streets of New York and welcomed the invaders with loud screams and insane fanaticism. The invaders were The Beatles and the members were Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. One of the biggest and influential bands to change the face of music as we know it took the world by storm by introducing new sound, new fashion, and a new way of approaching music. The Beatles have etched a name for themselves and stand in history as one of the greatest bands of all time. However there is a reason why they are regarded so highly and have become the big name that they are today. I never once listened to The Beatles and I didn’t get into music until I was twelve years old, yet at the age of nine I knew who they were. The Beatles are almost a household name in western cultures and that is because of the profound effect they brought upon society at the time. With help from their musical influences, experiences, and being present at the right place at the right time, The Beatles ascended into fame. It is because of factors like their influences, their experiences as a band, their management, and their arrival at the right time that made their takeover that much more successful and influential.
First of all, I remember the Beatles introduced in the book 'Outliers' which is a book that tries to explain how the 'Outliers' became the 'Outliers'. The description of the Beatles was that they were ready for their fame when they started to get famous. They were playing 5 hours a day 7days a week in bars, covering the songs of rock 'n' roll. They weren't actually writing songs or creating per se, but I strongly believe that they understood rock 'n' roll from all that playing. They must have internalized the genre and felt free to experiment with it so creatively. I believe they were ready to experiment later in their song making career because they put so much time in it. The book say that they were of course talented individuals, but hours they put into rock
Early on in The Beatles career, they were criticized for their feminine-style haircuts and their less-than manly mannerisms. Before The Beatles, there were strict regulations on how male and female celebrities had to appear. Men were to be clean-shaven, have short hair. Women were to have shoulder length hair, and be pleasing to their man. T...
The Beatles were a popular British rock and roll band in the 1960’s. At the time, they were the most popular musicians in the world and had profound effects on culture worldwide. Just because they were the most popular, however, does not mean that they were universally loved. They weren’t. John Lennon himself once said, “You have to be a bastard to make it. That’s a fact. And the Beatles were the biggest bastards on Earth” (Thill). After reviewing an online biography about the band and various books about their societal impact, I have found that through their unique hairstyles, illicit drug use, and rock music, the Beatles grew a strong connection to American counter culture and were widely opposed by conservative America because of it.
A major person that the Beatles has influenced was an artist named Kurt Cobain (widely known as the singer of Nirvana). Another short example of someone that was influenced by the Beatles was Gene Simmons (singer and bassist of KISS). Not only Artists but people were influenced by the words in the Beatles music to start fighting for rights of people. During the Vietnam war John Lennon would talk about how the world should come together and fight for peace. This came up to the song (Imagine) sung by John Lennon. The Beatles had a popular hairstyle that young teen boys got called “Mop-top”. Usually young teens wore this style of hair and it was highly mocked by adults. Clothing they wore eventually became popular to both male and female listeners. An example where the highly known glasses that John Lennon would wear called teashade glasses but are known now from people as “John Lennon glasses”, these glasses were round shaped shades. The influence of The Beatles on the people may seem small but it created a huge effect on fashion now, and on how people view the
The Beatles were a legendary rock and pop group that formed in Liverpool, England in 1960. John Lennon met Paul McCartney in 1957. He invited John to join his music group. George Harrison met Paul in grammar school.Later, they discovered George’s talent of the electric guitar, and he was invited to join Lennon's group, The Quarrymen (News, CBS). George Harrison joined them in February of 1958. Later in time, they started experimenting with different type of music styles. The Beatles became the most popular band of all time (A&E Networks Television).
To a college student, or even to a professor, putting a time frame for the Rolling Stones is a task which requires envisioning a world before every memory one has ever made. “Timeless” would be an appropriate adjective, but “the 1950s” serves just as well. The band did not start as its line-up consists of today. Hardly, if any, bands have ever started like that. The Rolling Stones started as a small teen band named, “Little Boy Blue and the Blue Boys”, with Mick Jagger singing and Keith Richards playing guitar. The music they played was all covers; they played songs which came from the musicians which they enjoyed. At this time, there were not any new movements arising which were primarily British. In this post-World War II era, the biggest new genres emerging were jazz, country/western, and R&B (rhythm and bass). With these being primarily American genres, many adults in Britain did not want their children listening to this unfamiliar new music. However, the Rolling Stones were always a group attracted to the idea of rebellion. Such influential figures were Buddy Holly, Muddy Waters, and St.-Louis native Chuck Berry.
I chose this Rock group because it brings back memories of when my father always sang to their music apart from the Beatles. I remember the happy, beefy chords of “Start me up” weekend mornings in the house. I believe that this group did more to express rock and it’s core. The Rolling Stones, described themselves and by fan-supported, is “The World’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band.” The Rolling Stones is well into its fifth decade singing together as a group. They are the longest-lived, continuous performing band in the history of music. From the band’s early British early stages through the present-day, The Rolling Stones has continued to modify its music to the sounds and styles of the past decades, remaining ever visible and admired in the
The Rolling Stones are one of the most well known hard rock bands. They have a distinctive history that separates them from other similar rock bands. Their unique sound formed the basis of rock and roll. The band had a huge influence on British music through things such as their fashion, fusion of obscure genres, and attitude. Over the course of the last fifty years, The Rolling Stones unique history, sound, and overall look still has an influence on modern British bands.
Who is better: The Beatles or The Rolling Stones? This is quite possibly the most debated question in the history of rock music. Unfortunately, many debaters don’t learn the facts about these two legendary bands before plunging into heated arguments about this topic. What is surprising about these two groups is that they are exceptionally alike. Though they are minuscule, there are distinctions that set The Beatles and The Rolling Stones apart.
Before the Beatles were the Beatles, they were just normal musicians. John Lennon the person in charge of the band in the 50’s called the Quarry Men met Paul McCartney on July 6, 1957, where both musicians are performing in Skiffle Groups. After hearing Paul play at the concert John’s manager asked Paul if he would like to join the Quarry Men, Paul accepted his offer. Many musicians tried out to join the Quarry Men, however none of them made it. On February 6, 1958 George Harrison tried out by playing Raunchy and John made him become the newest member of the group. The members of the Quarry Men are; “John, Paul and George, with the addition of Johns Friend from art college, Stu Sutcliffe and a guitarist named Pete Best” (The Beatles pg. 1). They went off to Germany to get a better chance to become known and famous. While they are in Germany, Stu Sutcliffe decides to go back to college to get back into art which he is in love with and be with Astrid which he met in Germany. The members remaining in the Quarry Men group renamed their group and now their group calling it Silver Beatles and returned to Liverpool. As the group thought their luck was terrible, a young record storeowner in the late 1961, with the name of Brian Epstein, noticed the Beatles with their great musicians skills, he thought they have something unique to them (History of The Beatles pg. 1). The Silver Beatles held a tough ima...
The Beatles are an English rock band who originated in Liverpool, England in 1960. They were a huge success locally even before they began to make records in the United Kingdom. The band was comprised of four members: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. They owe much of their early, quick success to manager Brian Epstein who molded them into a professional act, and producer George Martin who enhanced their musical potential. Early in the 1960’s, their widespread fame in the United Kingdom was first referred to as “Beatlemania”. Eventually, they acquired the nickname “the Fab Four” as Beatlemania grew rapidly in Britain. By 1964, the Fab Four made their way overseas and officially became international pop stars. The Beatles were the leading factor in the “British Invasion” of the United States pop market.
