Plot Analysis of "Young Goodman Brown" and "No Country For Old Men"

The story Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne depicts a man whose inner desire is to experience the forbidden forest, as well as retaining his reputation as a, “good and honest Christian.” In contrast this internal conflict is also portrayed in the movie No Country for Old Men, which was directed and written by the Coen brothers. In the movie the main character, Llewellyn Moss, is confronted with an ethical dilemma, and despite making the wrong decision he still tries to maintain his values and character. Essentially the central conflict of Young Goodman Brown is faithfulness versus forbidden, and the central conflict in No Country for Old Men is honesty versus corruption. The broad central conflict that both stories share is basically good versus evil.

In Young Goodman Brown, the main character, Goodman Brown is portrayed as a faithful and religious rooted person who is tempted to do something that he knows is wrong. The story has two distinct settings, which is town of Salem and the forest. The space of transformation would be the forest where Brown saw his wife and friends...
