In Barnett and Hughes’ (2010) article that focuses on the “three important milestones” that lead to college completion, the authors dissect the best practices used across the country by colleges and high schools to get their students on the track to success in college. They found that dual enrollment of classes, which occurs when high school students are allowed to take college courses at the same time, and earn college credit upon completion, addresses the three main milestones identified. Dual enrollment also adds value for students and assists in helping students become acclimated to college. Although some states have restrictions on who can take dual enrollment, (ex. Must have a 3.0 GPA) the focus seems to be shifting away from those restrictions to target the populations that may not have been interested in post-secondary education (Barnett and Hughes, 2010). Barnett and Hughes (2010) found that the reach of dual enrollment was significant, as of 2002-2003, with over 800,000 high school students enrolled in these services. The reach doesn’t stop there with the most popular offering, because there are other effective services such as summer bridge programs and early and middle high schools, which are both able to encompass the three milestones Barnett and Hughes (2010) define. Their focus for the early and middle schools led to statistics that showed about 42,000 students were enrolled in these schools in 2008-09, and found little to no achievement gap between minority and non-minority students (Barnett and Hughes, 2010). 1.3 million high school took dual credit college courses. A dual credit course is when a high school student takes an online class through a high school environment. This student will receive credit upon completion within both college and his high school giving its name dual credit. Some people think that this is a great opportunity for high school students while some think that it shouldn't be offered. Personally i think they are a very good thing and I plan to put them on my schedule next year just based off facts learned while researching but i will talk you through both sided thoughts. Attendance at a technical college or local 2-year school was deplorably referenced to as “loser’s territory” and if you dared to enroll in one anyway and followed through to graduation, well you were congratulated but to a lackluster fanfare. Some community college graduates still receive this reception upon exit of a community college but attitudes are definitely changing. Today more than ever, degree-seeking individuals are paving the path to their careers through the entrance and exit doors of community colleges. These well-informed leaders of the new school have realized a smarter way to education; that a bachelor’s degree or taking a traditional route to obtain one is not necessarily the best or right way to be a successful and employable member of society.
As the economy evolves and the job market continues to get more competitive, it’s becoming harder to have a successful career without some kind of college degree. This creates a belief in many young students that college actually is a commodity, something they must have in order to have a good life. Following this belief, many students attend these schools with out being academically, financially, or mentally prepared. As the high school chapter is coming to a close, many students have to make a decision that will affect the rest of their lives. Hopefully, for many that decision is to enroll in a college and attain a higher education. However, as tuition costs rise, students have to take a second look at their options for a better future. Because universities are extending the number of applicants they are accepting, a lot of people question whether community colleges still matter. Personally, I share Liz Addison, for¬¬¬mer Southern Maine Community College student and graduate of Royal Veterinary College in London, opinion that appears in her essay “Two Years Are Better than Four” published in 2007. Tuition costs are continually rising and more and more high school graduate are considering other options to earn their degrees. The most effective route for earning a degree is attending community college before completing a four year degree at a university. I recently had to make this decision myself. In the state of Ohio, community college classes are all transferable to universities (within the same state). Therefore, classes offered at community colleges for a fraction of the cost are guaranteed to be considered equivalent to university courses when considered for a student 's degree. With tuition rising every year, students face the challenge paying the debt achieving a college degree comes with. “Student debt surpassed credit-card debt in June 2010 for the first time in history, rising to about $830 billion — or nearly 6 percent of the nation 's annual economic output”(Clemmitt, Marcia). Not everyone has a ton of money just laying around. Being that financial trouble is the biggest problem for students, they begin to question whether college is worth it or not. In recent years, students have taken out loans to help with expenses. Most students choose to attend a community and junior college to help minimize the debt. Even after graduating with a degree, students still face the struggle of finding a job in this economic time. For higher class families this may not be a problem to them. But for the middle class and low income families, they face tougher times being that they don 't have the financial help like higher class families do. For the middle class and low income families, it makes more sense attending a community and junior college rather than a four year university.
Educators revisited ways to improve the graduation rate of students in The New York Times article, “Revamping Community Colleges to Improve Graduation Rates” by Alina Tugend. Five steps listed which led to changes at community colleges across the country to improve graduation rates were: offer more aligned courses, demand less remedial math and English courses, combine remedial courses with the corresponding subject courses, ensure better counseling services for academic and personal issues, and decrease the amount of tuition. Changes mentioned in this article, “Revamping Community Colleges to Improve Graduation Rates” that help students acquire degrees from community colleges across the United States.
Students go to college in search of knowledge, a new lifestyle, and the hope of a job after graduation. For many young adults, college is a rite of passage into an independent, mature new lifestyle. Not only is higher education a rite of passage, for some, it is also an opportunity to have a better life. Overall, college is a wonderful part of many people’s lives, yet the way the college education system is conducted wastes students time and money. College is basically composed of two parts: general education classes and major specific classes. General education courses are the source of wasted time and money, and should not be required of students. A few of the problems associated with general education classes are that they are basically a repeat of high school, unfortunately they can be the demise of students, they are costly, and they waste time.

In today’s education world, students and parents are held more accountable for their education costs even though the price continues to rise. Due to this fact, some students are opting out of additional education. In the year 2009, only about thirty five percent of eligible students, aged 18-24, attend some type of higher education after high school (NCHEMS Information Center, 2016). There are many reasons for this, including cost, education level of the student, and their families’ background.In order to America to maintain the status as a leader in education, these millions of students and their talents will need to be encouraged to attend college.
A widely encouraged form of education is currently causing much debate, dual-enrollment. Dual-enrollment is the enrollment of a student in both high school and collegiate level courses. The question of giving high school students in such programs a “pass” has been present since dual-enrollment programs began. Though many schools have adopted the practice, several high schools and colleges remain undecided on the issue. However, high school students should receive a pass because colleges have much higher standards than high schools, expectations for high school students require our attention which may affect their work, and students do not make the final decision on how long they are able to work on assignments.
