Communication.

Communication is important in a relationship. It is what sustains a relationship, pushes it forward and keeps it going. Without communication we would live our own complete separate lives, acting as if we were hermits. Communicating well and effectively is a major part in our everyday lives. In Marry Higgins Clark's The Cradle Will Fall we see what happens when people fail to communicate effectively.

Relationships take work, and a lot of it. Richard Caroll and Katie DeMaio both are shy people, and though they trust each other and talk often they never say anything important. They have their own fears in the relationship. Richard doesn't want to push Katie to do anything that she isn't ready for, and because of this he doesn't tell her everything he knows about Dr. Highley. Richard is suspicious of Dr. Highley and doesn't trust him at all, but he never tells Katie this. Katie is completely oblivious to the threats around her. She is shy around Richard, which ends up hurting her in the end. She feels uncomfortable telling Richard that she is having D and C and instead of being more confident in her relationship and talking to Richard, letting him know that she's having surgery, she makes an excuse not to go out to eat with him on the Friday of her surgery. Now, because they have not communicated well, Katie is set to have surgery with a doctor that wants to kill her that Richard has hunches about. This lack of communication between Richard and Katie creates suspense in the story and makes us, as the reader, want to continue reading to find out what happens. This suspense is dramatic irony because the reader is the only person who knows all of the details in the story.

Think of the world around you. How many ways do we have to talk to each other? We can write letters, write emails, talk on instant messenger, or via text messaging. We can call each other, at home, at the office, on a plane, at the bus stop, any where we want with cell phones. We are almost always in constant communication with the world around us. Could you imagine it any other way? What if there was no communication between countries? We would know nothing about Iraq, Iran, or Israel, soldiers would have no way to contact their families, and we wouldn’t be able to get goods from places like China or India. With out way of life, communication is increasingly important. What if Katie could have texted Richard when she was running around the hospital? Would the same things have happened? Our world has evolved since then, but how will communication evolve next?
