Micro-Blogging In China

The media fraternity and communications departments are rapidly growing and improving in the quality of services they offer. This growth is largely attributed to technological developments and advancements. In this paper we seek to establish whether the shifts in technology have had any impact on people. We base our study on whether the use of micro-blogging (Weibo) has affected how Chinese citizens use the old media and how Weibo and its users have influenced the reporting of news events in china since it came into being in 2009.

The emergence and rapid increase of digital devices has had a significant impact on the communications sector in China and the world at large. It has affected how Chinese individuals entertain themselves, buy commodities and associate with others. This is facilitated by the fact that many people can easily access the internet at an affordable cost. In 2009 China was placed first in the use of blogs in the world, while Sina Weibo is the largest micro-blogging site with people using more than 87% of their time on it (Wenxin 2011).

Sina Weibo came about to fill the space left in the media when the use of Twitter was stopped by the Chinese governing body in 2009. It started its operations in August 2009 compared to other social sites for example Tencent, Sohu and NetEase which came in to effect in 2010. Sina Weibo services are similar to those offered by Twitter and its popularity is associated with the fact that many high profile individuals use it. It allows people to express themselves without any restrictions, although it is sometimes monitored by the government on what to air to viewers, but it is still preferred by many.
