Whether you are the type of friend that enjoys entertaining friends and hosting cocktail parties or you are looking for a career change, bartending can be an exciting and lucrative opportunity. It may sound cool and fun, but if you ask any professional bartender, they will tell you that it can be a difficult job. Rewarding yes, but can be difficult. There are many misconceptions on what it takes to be a professional bartender. Here are two of the most popular misconceptions that people aspiring to work as a bartender have. One, “Do I need to go a bartending school? “ And “How do I get my license to work as a bartender?” First off, let us start discussing about bartending schools. Most ask “How do I get my license to work as a bartender?” This is another common misconception. There is no such thing as a Bartender’s License. What you actually need to get is a state-issued “Liquor Pouring Certification”. Some call it the Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) license. Other states have other names for this. But do not, I repeat, do not confuse this to be the actual bartending license (as there is no such thing). But what it really is a certification allowing you and the establishment you are working for to sell and serve alcohol to patrons. Many states require such certification before anyone can sell or serve alcohol. Different states have different rules and regulations on who can sell and serve alcohol, and laws vary even from every municipality. Details like the age of servers are one of the common topics (some states allow 18-year old bartenders to serve alcohol; some restrict it to 21 years old). However, in some states, it is up to the business owners if they will require an employee to have an ABC-type of certification when working for the establishment.
