Being a member of an immigrant family of six, and with a single mother that has worked extremely hard to get me where I am right now, it is very difficult to obtain the resources needed to further my education. Three of my siblings are married and with kids, and then there is me and my brother, we are both in the same grade and are graduating this year. We both plan to attend college; I am pursuing my dream of becoming a doctor, specifically a cardiologist and my brother plans to pursue a degree in engineering. Ever since I was a kid, I had my mother be my hero, seeing her work so hard have me hope that someday I will help people. I have always dreamed of giving them a chance to survive whatever disease is threatening their lives. The exiting feeling of discovering new cures and terminating diseases that right now are impossible to cure is intriguing.

I am very interested in attending Flagler College for a number of reasons, Flagler is the perfect college to help my achieve my goals. It offers the individual help that I desire, an outstanding business program, a wide variety of clubs and organizations, and most important, Flagler opens up a lot of opportunities for career choices.
My family income is not that high. Both of my parents are high school drop outs, so they never made it to college. As we all know finding a job with a well-paid job can be dreadful without a high school diploma or a college diploma, but they manage through. To study for pediatrician is very expensive, but I and both my parents work hard enough to be in college. I am the first in my family generation to be in college and have a career set. It is not easy to be the first because at times it can be very frustrated because if I were to fail every single person in my family well look and maybe even be disappointed not mention my younger sister and cousin. They all look up to me and feel proud that I am the first to break that chain.
As I thought of this article, many of the issues I have faced as a single Hmong woman in her mid-twenties came to mind. Should I discuss the functional reasons why marriage is so important in the Hmong culture, especially for women? Or do I talk about the lack of eligible, older Hmong men? Better yet, should I complain about the attempts by my relatives to find me a good husband as if it were an unfortunate circumstance that I was single instead of a conscious choice? Thinking it over, though, I decided that all those questions boiled down to one fundamental truth – the Hmong community is still trying to learn how to treat the increasing number of Hmong women who, like me, are making the choice to stay single in their mid-twenties.
As the former president of Harvard University, Derek Bok wrote “The most obvious purpose of college education is to help students acquire information and knowledge by acquainting them with facts, theories, generalizations, principles, and the like. This purpose scarcely requires justification.” America needs educated citizens to help maintain the level of intelligence we have in society. Students need to be taught to their specific career and the knowledge needed in that career. Though education students are strengthened for their futures as good citizens. Probably the most important turning point in my life happened in 1992. At this time, I was eight years old and living in Williamsport Pennsylvania. My dad had a well-paying job at Anchor Darling Valve Company, I was attending a parochial school and I thought life was just great. At the time we lived in a large four-story house with a separate three-story garage and an acre of forest for a backyard. I had a ten-speed bicycle and I would often go bicycling with my friends at the nearby cemetery. No-one ever objected to this, in fact people would often have picnics at the top of this hill at the cemetery. I guess the only things I ever complained about were the constant music lessons and practice sessions my parents subjected me to.

At the start of the semester, my oblivious state of nature associating with the Chinese culture reached an unacceptable level. Implementing a necessary change, I decided to educate myself on different cultures starting with China. I failed to ponder that such a rich, deep culture existed outside America. Encompassed by this country’s unique yet suffocating melting pot culture, my outlook believed ideas such as uniformity between American Chinese food and Authentic Chinese food. After this course, my bigot perspective widened as I witnessed diversity in the world. Before this class, when I thought of Chinese food, my connotation jumped to thoughts associated with chop suey, but as I progressed my education, my mindset gradually pondered foods like steamed buns or “New Year Cakes” with authentic Chinese food.
The empathy and compassion I felt with my family while growing up helped nurture me into a very kind-spirited but strong person. It’s a trait that I am thankful for but sometimes hesitant to show to not be taken advantage of. My mother often used to say that I am more like her than I am like my father we’re very passionate and spicy, but when we’re needed we often never fail to give to others. I always knew since the tender age of seven that I wanted to become a doctor to help save others. Most people end up changing their careers as they get older but I only became more specific of what kind of doctor I wanted to be. Most of my family members are Certified nursing assistants, licensed practical nurses, or registered nurses. I know they worked hard to get the education and requirements to be in those fields which is big since half of them came to America without finishing high school in Haiti. However, I want to become the first doctor in my close family and not settle for less. I want to be the first to break the mold and be different. I know that the conditions they grew up in was not the same as mine, but I owe it to them for all the hard work and ambition they showed, and instilled in me to aim for the sky and to always keep
A very common concern that faces many high school students today in the world is whether they go to college or not. There are many factors in whether a student is eligible to attend a college or not. Starting college is an intense and confusing event that plagues all recent high school graduates. When my dad was gone I had to help my mom and Ross out with some of Ross’ treatments, like the pressure garments that kept his skin grafts on. I learned a lot about the medical world from an early age which has been fueled by the science that I learned in school and has been nurtured by my love for it. I have always had a passion to learn. My interest is in political theory and economics, hoping someday to become a lawyer and stateswoman. I realize that in order to reach any of these goals, a college degree is vital. Seventeen years of living in this state has been an abundance of life changing events. It was my first day in junior high school, every dramatic parents crying with their son or daughter. Starting from the first day you have a load of classes like math, science, social studies, gym, and sadly reading. Ever since I started school reading hasn’t been my favorite. Thick paragraphs of words trying to create a meaning didn’t mean anything to me.
I have always regarded myself with having the best work ethic of anyone I knew. When at high school, I thought as myself as the best all-around student, and person. Being highly regarded by both faculty and students was a great confidence boost when I began my college application process, but I soon realized how it was hard to but all of my accomplishments, into a very short essay. I was not, and still am not the best academically in my class, but to me, it doesn’t matter if my GPA isn’t a 4.0 or if I didn’t graduate valedictorian of my class. What I know is I possess skills that make me the best candidate for anything I want to pursue.
