Collaboration is a working method whereby employees work together to a similar purpose of achieving a business benefit. Collaboration can also be the ability to operate together in business to enhance performance and results. The combination of a number of factors may assist or steer collaboration to attain business results, via empowerment and technology.
Globalization is a quickly developing incorporation of economies and societies around the globe, leading to rising connectivity, combination and interdependence in the social, technological, economical, and political spheres. It is comprised of growing mobility of products, services, capital, labor and technology. Primary forces spearheading globalization are the loosening of markets and the effect of information communication technologies (ICTs) on goods, processes and market operations (Bates & Smith, 2010).
To be exact, internet-oriented supply channels and collaborative working environments (CWEs) for societies and teams play a vital role in enabling businesses to respond efficiently to the difficulties and opportunities intrinsic in globalization. Progressively more, the Web 2.0 technologies are being utilized in this line. The intensity and shape of the continuing route to globalization and the incorporation of global collaboration are heavily affected by governmental policies and global bodies including enterprise strategies. In today’s society, being able to work well with others is becoming an important ability in being effective in work or school. Teamwork plays important roles in many aspects, such as work, sports, and even video games. What is teamwork? Vince Lombardi, the legendary football coach, defined teamwork as "Individual commitment to a group effort -- that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, and a civilization work." This famous quote defines teamwork in general. Teamwork basically means that working together with others. For me, teamwork means success in many respects, such as jobs, sports, and games. Personally, I believe that teamwork makes work fun.
Collaboration is defined as working together, and the concept of collaboration is very diverse and encompasses various aspects of team work with a goal in mind. The goal being to optimize the quality of life and the wellbeing of our community that we are caring for. Through collaboration of various sorts we can provide effective holistic care that will bring better outcomes to our patients and their families.
There are two main categories of collaboration: dialogic and hierarchical. Wood and Gray (1991) define collaboration as “a process in which a group of autonomous stakeholders of an issue domain engage in an interactive process, using shared rules, norms, and structures to act or decide on issues related to that domain” (p. 437). Gray (1989) calls collaboration “a process through which parties who see different aspects of a problem can constructively explore their differences and search for solutions that go beyond their own limited vision of what is possible” (p. 5). According to Eddy, a “key tenet of partnering is that benefits accrue from creating a collaboration: individual partners cannot accomplish their overarching goals on their own, but a partnership creates the ultimate win-win situation” (2010, viii).
Collaboration is an agreement between two individuals or professionals to interact constructively in problem solving to accomplish a determine goal, purpose or outcome(Hamric et al, 2014).
Working on a virtual team, or as Daim, et al. (2012) described it, "culturally diverse, geographically dispersed, electronically-connected workgroups" (p. 202) moves the team members away from the traditional, face to face communication. As Daim, et al. (2012) continues, "team members struggle to effectively communicate and work with one another" (p. 202) as traditional communication channels are replaced with an assortment of tools.
The article “Enhancing collaboration” was written by two authors Silverstone and Thomas, who both have adequate knowledge about managing their business and always come up with incredible solutions to success. In this article, collaboration is mentioned not all productive, and different types of collaboration pose different requirements and benefit from different enablers. A virtual team is a group of people working interdependently via various types of electronic media across organizational and geographical boundaries for a shared purpose (D’Souza & Colarelli, 2010). Research indicates virtual teams are becoming increasingly popular in organizations across the United States and the world (D’Souza & Colarelli, 2010; Rusman, van Bruggen, Sloep, & Koper, 2010). These teams vary in size, degree of geographic dispersion, prior shared work experience, nature of assignment, and expectations of a common future (Rusman et al., 2010). Although virtual teams have potential advantages like the removal of physical boundaries, the ability to form new partnerships, and optimization of competencies (Chinowsky & Rojas, 2003), they also introduce many challenges that may not be as prevalent in traditional teams.
The methods of communicating for a virtual team consist of different tools than used by a traditional team because “…awareness of others’ activities is more difficult and requires some degree of technological intervention” (Fussell et.al., 1998, p. 276). A virtual team needs to use alternative tools because it has members working from different geographical areas and possibly at different times. A traditional team meets face to face, whereas a virtual team needs the use of technology to operate and interact efficiently. Teleconferencing, video conferencing, faxing, e-mail, and instant messaging are some of the tools available to a virtual team.
“Human beings have always functioned in face-to-face groups. While the use of teams is on the rise the Wall Street Journal reports that two-thirds of American companies employ them – the face to face aspect of normal working relationships is changing. Virtual teams…. What are they? Well, virtual teams are groups of geographically and/or organizationally dispersed coworkers who use a combination of telecommunications and information technologies to accomplish an organizational task (Williams, 2016). Layman’s terms, its people who work together but do not work in the same office. They may never meet face to face, or may once and a while meet face to face. In the new digital age, global partnerships and communication is key. However, traveling to keep these relationships thriving is not always possible financial and/or time management. Which is why virtual organizations are utilized more and more. Virtual organization is "a flexible network of independent entities linked by information technology to share skills, knowledge and access to others ' expertise in nontraditional ways."
