Ethics and values apply to our personal and professional lives. If you are able to understand and implement values and ethics in everyday practices, you will encourage one’s success in personal and professional careers. Ethics is a concept of one’s actions, which derives from principals of an individual doing what is right not wrong. Velasquez, Andre, Shanks, and Meyer (1987), define ethics as a “well based standard of right and wrong that prescribe what humans ought to do, usually in terms of rights, obligations, benefits to society, fairness, or specific virtues”. (par. 9) These beliefs are compiled to help a person determine how their actions will be carried out. Values can be applied as principles to a person’s way of living. There are people that view values as a personal code, and see them as a personal testimony of their beliefs.
Our professional values and ethics come from many different sources. In our early years, our parents and peers are instrumental in the development of our professional values and ethics. As we enter the workforce we align with our employer’s core values. Most organization will have a vision statement that identifies what values they believe are important according to a National Defense University article (NDU, 2009). We use these values to steer us in our decisions, when assessing problems and determining what action to take when problems arise. When we do not adhere to established values and ethics the trust factor is severely compromised and respect will be hard to gain.
For example, if a person believes that they are being treated unfairly in their work environment their values will determine how they react to that situation. The values and beliefs they adhere to when assessing unf...

rectify the situation and protect the business. The unwillingness to do what is necessary to combat unethical behavior only exacerbates a situation and erodes employee morale. Professionals must possess some level of personal responsibility and ethics if they wish to have a successful career.
Ethics and values are fundamental, but they are also essential in day-to-day- life as well as our work environment. They are the principals which helps us determine our actions and conduct in professional settings and the building blocks for setting goals for us to work towards. Like a giant puzzle the pieces come together over time, and when complete defines who we are and what we believe.
Ethical values may come in all shapes and sizes; we may grow up with a certain set of ethics and/or values that change and conform to our environment. This widely depends on where we end up later in life as in our professional career or our personal lives because different situations can affect how we interrupt ethics and social responsibility. Work may influence or provide a new set of lenses in how ethics are viewed. We are given a set of ethics to adhere to while employed. By definition, “that branch of philosophy dealing with values relating to human conduct, with respect to the rightness and wrongness of certain actions and to the goodness and badness of the motives and
Ethical values are those certain standard or norms that decide what people should and should not do in general. The main characteristics of ethical values are “honesty, integrity, the promise of keeping, fairness, loyalty, respect for others, law abiding, and leadership accountability” (Ethical values) and this list could go on.
Ethics are the principles and values used by an individual to govern his or her actions and decisions and it is very important in an organization. The code of ethics within an organization must be developed to help guide the organization in its decisions, programs, and policies. Having an ethical organizational culture that consists of leaders and employees adhering to ethical standards can guide leaders in determining organizational procedures and outline acceptable behavior among staff. Ethical leaders can also help employees meet standards of good quality work, accomplish organizational goals, adhere to policies and rules within the organization, and enhances the organization reputation within the community.
Values are a core set of beliefs and principles by one or many. A number of factors contribute to the development of values. These include membership in a community or culture, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. Values determine what is important in decision-making. Ethics involve conduct, the ability to determine right and wrong. All organizations face ethical dilemmas. Organizations develop corporate social responsibility in reaction to the values and expectations of society. Corporate social responsibility initiatives aim to protect public health, safety...
Every individual has certain values and ethics that he/she stands by. Values give us a sense of what is important while ethics gives us a sense of what is right and wrong. Together, these qualities help guide us through our everyday life: what actions to take and what decision to make. Sticking to ethical standards allows you to stay clear of trouble; therefore, strengthening people’s trust in you. In return, this leads to gaining people’s respect and cooperation, which may result in leadership responsibilities. Therefore, we believe that personal values and ethics will affect a person’s career success. However, there are times where individuals will make unethical choices--some situations might question your resolve. This can be caused by
Ethics are moral principles that govern a person's behavior or the conducting of an activity, and values are a person's principles or standards of behavior.
Over the years, I have also learned that ethics help us to remain on the stable side of the ground in an ever-changing world and that a person’s values can be altered. The heart of ethics is integrity and values of the individual. If you can change the values and increase the integrity of the individual, you will eventually change their principles. Moral values help to improve your behavior, instill respect and enhance relationships with others. Knowing what is right or wrong is an essential element in life that shapes the character of an individual. Good moral values allow a person to make the right decisions and improve their interactions with other people. For example: respecting the elders, neighbors, the sick and other people within a society helps to enhance relationships. Good relationships contribute to create good connections between people. Moral values also have an important role in the stability of marriages and families. People should be truthful to avoid conflict with others. Standing firm on what is right, no matter the situation is always a courageous decision that improves the quality of
Ethics and values are essential and important in every aspect; in our daily personal and professional lives. To begin with, what is ethics? Ethics are a set of rules or values based on the morality of what is good and bad. Having ethics and values is what keeps our society less chaotic. I believe the code of ethics is necessary in the criminal justice system because the main purpose of the professionals within this field is to make sure that they treat citizens with respect and dignity. Code of ethics is a document that summaries the mission and values of a business or organization. It also summaries how professionals are supposed to carry themselves, approach problems and the principles to which the professional is held.
My ethics and values are developed from my religious beliefs, my associations with professionals, and self experiences. My religion installs values such as honesty, courtesy, and determination, which determine how I treat other people. My association with professionals helps me to embrace values, such as determination, personal integrity, accountability, and excellence, which are fundamental in designing my academic and professional paths. The experiences I have encountered in life have taught me to observe and embrace many ethical values, including ambition, integrity, and responsibility, which enable me to associate well with my family and other members of the society.
Values remind me of ethics and morals, necessary in any walk of life and imperative in the work place. These concepts are guidelines in which employees need to follow to be successful. “Values represent basic convictions that a specific mode of conduct or end-state of existence is personally or socially preferable to an opposite or converse mode of conduct or end-state of existence.” (Robbins, 136) Integrity, courage, service, wisdom, respect and goal setting are a few of the values that are most crucial to me and what I hope to achieve within any work place setting. Values should be lived every day in the work place and should exemplify the
Ethics and values are important in a business as they help the business function and create a standard for employees and help the environment and the community which in turn allows them to do support businesses.
Personal, organizational, and cultural values are the basis of an individual's personal and professional decision-making style. These values are the key ingredients that make up our core beliefs. Values are ideas that are actions which could be right or wrong, good or bad that are the basis of human action (Tosi 2000). Personal values might also be called morality, since they reflect general expectations of any person in any society, acting in any capacity. These are the principles we try to instill in our children, and expect of one another without needing to articulate the expectation or formalize the process in any way. Family is the first school for a child where the seeds of cultural values are sown (Jain para 6). Cultural values are the beliefs of a human group that one can identify. Cultural value is the newest terminology which is used in literature on international relationships and economics. Individuals acting in an organization take on an additional burden of ethical responsibility. For example, organizations have codes of ethics that prescribe required behavior within the context of a professional practice such as medicine, law, accounting, or engineering. These written codes provide rules of conduct and standards of behavior based on the principles of Professional Ethics (Colero para15).
Personal values and ethics govern personal success and have an impact on career success. Everyone has their own set of values and ethics that have been taught throughout life. Personal values and ethics are learned behaviors, hence, some are easy to understand and apply, some can be acquired, and each compliments the other. Values and ethics can carry consequences. Therefore, if one applies the practices, they can succeed. If one ignores or violates the practices, one will find themselves in the position of self loathing, stress, or in a bad situation. These values and ethics carry over into our professional lives as we go into our careers.
Ethical behaviour is what all career people should aim to have. Not just the ethical attribute but exceptional behaviour with this regard.this is because in order to build a career, one must be governed by the rules of ethics to safeguard oneself and others. Ethics are essential in the workplace because a tough ethical code provides a non-threatening environment with high employee morale. The corporate social responsibility is important to everyone, therefore it should not be neglected by the employees and the organization. Ethics purely center on personal conduct. It involves personal choices that can make or break a person in the workplace or business. The major importance of having good conduct is to maintain a high level of respect not just for people but for the proffession. Most people who begin their working career have aspirations of excelling at their jobs and reaching the pinnacle of their profession while maintaining a sense of values; however employees often become blind with ambition and put aside their sense of ethics in order to obtain financial security and recognition for their efforts. There are many things that one can gain from having good behavioural ethics in the workplace.
