Recommended: How to cope with various man - made disasters

Climax

Whoooooo! The winds were ferocious and howling too! A terrible storm comes out of the blue and leads the ship off course. Everyone is praying that their souls be spared! Crash! The next thing Crusoe knows, the sip is wrecked on a deserted island with no land anywhere near. He also realizes he is the only survivor of the deadly shipwreck. He leaves the boat and finds no sign of life anywhere. He returns back to the wreck twelve times to salvage guns, powder, food, and other important equipment. He finds goats on the island to eat along with a few familiar birds. He decided to set up a large wooden pole and started to make small v shaped cuts on it every day, so as not to lose track of time. The dreaded day he landed on the island was September 1st 1659. He never forgets that day. He started to build a shelter that is like a home and because he thought his gun powder might get wet he builds an underground cellar. He later expands the cellar so he could stay there in case of an emergency. I wouldn’t be able to imagine living on an island and not being afraid of everything. I...

    A common person’s knowledge about sea disasters comes from what they have read in books and articles, and what they see on TV and in movies. The average person does not get to experience the fury of a hurricane while on a boat. In order to capture the audience’s attention, consideration to details and vivid descriptions are needed to paint a realistic picture in their minds. For this reason, the stories have to provide all of the intricate details. In The Perfect Storm, the story starts out with a radio call, not a dramatic scene that immediately foreshadows the possibility of danger. Rather than describing the storm and its fury, the only mention of the setting is of the visibility and the height of waves. However, in “The Wreck of the Hesperus”, the poem begins by stating there is a hurricane possible right away.     The island itself is boat-shaped, and in the opening scenes the island has the glamour of a new-found paradise(."On Lord of the Flies."). Ralph and the others are now in an unknown but beautiful place. Before finding the conch, Ralph was swimming and having fun in the warm ocean waters. The island “can be a wonderful place, as the littluns discover by day when they are bathing in the lagoon pool or eating fruit from the trees”("Themes and Construction: Lord of the Flies") But soon after lighting the first fire, it transforms the island, now half of the island is burned to the ground showing what always becomes of humans; the innocence goes away. At night the littluns cry out in fear because they now know that the island isn 't perfect; it 's a scary place.     Crusoe accepts the challenge to survive, but not only does he survive, but he also expands and discovers new qualities about himself. In the beginning of his time on the island, Crusoe feels exceedingly secluded. He fears savages and wild beasts on the island, and he stays high up in a tree. Lacking a "weapon to hunt and kill creatures for his sustenance" (Defoe, 47), he is susceptible. Defoe believed that "the nature of man resides in the capacity for improvement in the context of a material world" (Seidel, 59), and this becomes apparent in his novel. The tools that Crusoe possesses from the ship carry out this notion, improving his life on the island dramatically. He progresses quickly, and no longer feels as isolated as he did before on the island. Crusoe uses his tools to build a protective fence and a room inside a cave. He then builds a farm where he raises goats and grows a corn crop. Later, his ambitions take him to the other side of the island where he builds a country home. Also, with the weapons that Crusoe creates, he saves Friday from cannibals, and makes him his servant. Because of his tools, his supply becomes more than sufficient for survival. He comes to learn that if he works with his surroundings instead of wallowing in the fact that he has no longer got what he thinks he needs, he able to find and use everything he needs in order to carry out life.
