The nineteenth century novel of Jane Eyre written by Charlotte Bronte is an unrealistic fairy tale because the main character is rescued by her prince and due to many coincidental events, her wrongs are righted and she lives happily every after. This is an unrealistic fairy tale due to the hardships of the main character of Jane. In fairytale the main character has hardships and like fairy tales Jane suffers many hardships; her aunt mistreating her, the inhumane living at Lowood School and the rude and obnoxious proposals she receives from men who love her.

Jane suffers when her aunt, Mrs. Reed, mistreats her. One time Jane suffers mistreatment from her aunt is when she is locked in the red-room;“ ‘ take her away to the red-room, and lock her in there.’ ” (Bronte, I, pg. 16). Like in the fairy tale of Cinderella, Jane is locked in a room for something she did not do. In a detailed analysis of Jane Eyre a critic stated “The red room, which Jane gets locked in as a child, symbolizes both imprisonment and also what a marriage to St. John Rivers would be like”(Book Stove).
