A learner is a person acquiring new knowledge, behaviors, skills, values or understanding from a person or a situation. The learner will gain new insight on the subject matter and from then will be in a more enlightened position. Most human beings go to schools to learn about different features and skills. Learning can be done by both the young and adults and each has their own unique characteristics.
Characteristics of a young learner.
A young learner pays limited attention: This is because they are usually curious and are easily disturbed by the happenings around them. A young learner will always be too anxious and hence will try to learn what is being taught while at the same time they are preoccupied with other things. Hence the teacher should be extra attentive to ensure each student understands.
Limited experience: In most scenarios, a young learner will be hearing what is being taught for the first time in their life time, meaning they will have not had any prior experience on the subject matter. This makes them to believe what the teacher says as the gospel truth. Hence the teacher should ensure that the information fed to the young learners is correct for it can be pretty hard to convince the learners otherwise.
Motivation: Majority of young learners have no idea why they go to school. Some learn because their parents said so while others come to class just because their friend also comes. This makes them have no motivation of concentrating and wanting to learn more. Hence as a teacher it is important to keep on emphasizing on the importance of learning to the young learners.

Group project is another fine way of assessing the student’s development. This is so because some students will only open up in the company of their peers, thus placing them in groups will give an opportunity to check development (Michigan State University, 2011).

“Motivation is the process whereby goal-orientated activity is instigated and sustained” (Schunk, Pintrich & Meece, 2008. As cited in Eggen & Kauchak, 2010, p.284). Motivation comes in many forms and can be divided into two broad categories - extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivators are external factors which can motivate a student; rewards are an example of this. An issue with extrinsic motivators is that the desire for the learner to participate often lessens, once the rewards are withdrawn (McCullers, 1987). On the other hand intrinsic motivation comes from within - learning for the joy of it - where the desire to learn leads to a higher level of knowledge, and is a reward in itself. Kohn (1996, p.285) states that research suggests, “Rewards actually decrease interest in intrinsically motivating tasks, therefore sending the wrong message about learning” (as cited in Eggen & Kauchak, 2010a)

Students must be able to be active in their want of education. It is essential that students are able to interact with peers and teachers in order to completely understand daily learning. It is first important to understand how motivation works in the classroom. There are infinite procedures teachers use to achieve desired effects from their students, but there are general patterns these motivational tools follow. In order for teachers to communicate with their students, they must identify with their needs on an individual basis (Gawel, 1997). This proposal is much akin to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, which states five basic needs that must be met in order to achieve full motivation. These needs, in ascending order, are as follows: physiological, security, love and belongingness, esteem and self-respect, and self-actualization (Gawel, 1997). Each of these needs details a very important issue in motivation inside the classroom and out.
In many cases, it has become very complex to keep students interested in their education. So the teacher must be creative and find ways to keep pushing the student onward as well as upward. In order to devise the ultimate plan for educating students, a teacher must acknowledge that the “students” are what teaching is all about.
