What determines the components of a successful individual? Education is a critical part of what creates prosperous people, but positive character is just as important. "We must remember that intelligence is not enough. Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education. " (Martin Luther King Jr. quoted in Haynes and Thomas) Character is not an inherited trait, and it is also not a part of most common core curriculums. Therefore, service learning and character education should be implemented in schools along with civic learning (textbook learning) to provide the most beneficial tools in molding future members of society.
Character is defined as, the aspects of a person that identifies them (“Character”). As H. Jackson Brown once said, “Good character is more to be praised than outstanding talent. Most talents are, to some extent, a gift. Good character, by contrast, is not given to us. We have to build it, piece by piece -- by thought, choice, courage, and determination.” (Quoted in Khurana).
In order to achieve exceptional character an individual must possess the six pillars of character. These pillars include trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship (“The Six Pillars of Character”). Success in life depends on good character. As Abraham Lincoln stated, "Character is like a tree and reputation like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.”(“Character is like a tree and reputation like”). In this quote Abe infers that one’s reputation is a direct reflection of their character. Our reputations are beliefs and opinions that are held by our friends, family and even complete strangers about bout us. Someone’s reputation determines how they will be seen before even meeting them, almost like a first impression. Which is why your reputation is something you need to handle with care and protect, however some will go to extremes in doing this for instance the play The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller. It is a look into what it was like back in the 1800’s during the Salem witch trails. During this play Miller makes the strong argument of the importance of reputation and the countless ways people will protect it. In the play this occurs with many of the characters some more than others yet it’s of importance to everyone in some way or another. The protection of one’s reputation also occurs outside of the play, an example of this would be in politics and sports. In the play The Crucible, Author Miller makes the argument that reputation is incredibly important and people will go to great lengths such as betrayal and lying to protect it, quite often ones morality will become altered when protecting their reputation.
In today's society a person's reputation is more important than a persons integrity because it is how people perceive you. No one should want to want to ruin their reputation. The fact of the matter is that reputation plays a big role in society and it is should be very important to people and they should value it.
The famous poet James Russell Lowell once said, “Reputation is only a candle, of wavering and uncertain flame, and easily blown out, but it is the light by which the world looks for and finds merit” . Reality stresses the importance to be more concerned with personal character than self reputation, because character beholds who you really are, while your reputation is merely what others perceive. The epic of Beowulf, written in Old English, describes the adventures of a great Scandinavian warrior of the sixth century. Having an outstanding reputation was an important aspect of life, and in the world of Beowulf it was no different.
Character is defined as, “One of the attributes or features that make up and distinguish an individual.”(Merriam-Webster)
In outward conformity and in inward questioning, there is the power, the ability, and the motive to see and accept change. This change can be brought out by the tension that takes place between the two, and that change is the identity of a person; it is the difference between myself and the crowd. This realization can transform the world in a different sense: the sense of character.
Human character is expressed through consistent virtue that is engrained in a person and demonstrates tenacity in the face of testing. In Wright’s, After You Believe, Wright describes human character as a pattern of thinking and acting which runs right through a person. If a person fails to demonstrate consistency of virtue in the presence of pressure, the person’s true nature becomes apparent and his or her character is jeopardized. A person may be outwardly humble, yet in the face of demotion or false accusation, he may harbor offense and pride.

In other words, Character is the qualities that vary in individuals.Childrens character is the most concerned these days. Adults believe that character in a child is usually developed depending of how the child was raised during childhood however, rising 9th graders, believe that they can self mold themselves a character through finding friends and making mistakes in high school.What many people fail to realize is that it all varies on the child.
Josephson’s Six Pillars of Character can provide insights into the statements and behavior of the manager. Those statements and behavior indicate that there are problems with his Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, and Citizenship.
A reputation is not just decided in someones deeds and actions, but what people say of that person. Someones reputation is a powerful thing, especially hearing it from another person. When hearing an opinion of a person it may be true, but also false. In Much Ado About Nothing, the people of Messina find much importance in a person’s reputation. Don John, Claudio, Dogberry, Benedick, Leonato, and Hero are all involved in the opinion of others and their own reputations. William Shakespeare said “reputation is an idle and most false imposition; oft got without merit, and lost without deserving”.
A good reputation is needed in order to be with respect in a society. Those who have maintained a good reputation in society are given respect, but those who have not maintained a good reputation face more challenges in their life.
Over the course of an individual’s life there are many traits acquired which are things that contribute to the way he or she interacts with others, overall these traits help with the development of one’s personality. Character traits or qualities make up a person, whether it's their personality or attitude or the way they portray themselves to others. Every person individually possess traits and qualities that not only describe, but define them making every person different. Many of the admirable traits that I possess make me the man that I am today, contributing to my interactions with others and the career path I intend to pursue. Throughout my life, many events have revealed my true character traits which include determination, optimism, and faith.
