At least once a person’s lifetime, everyone think about who they want to become in their future. Most of the things they want to become, requires certain college degree to achieve that goal. Taking that first step of attaining the degree can be time consuming and involves loads of hard work. Some people have more determination and motivation to be successful, while others lack the motivation and can not finish. Not everyone drop out because they lack the determination to finish, instead they run into other obstacle while equipped with the motivation. Those of which are trying to regulate the balance of work and school, unexpected family problems, and financial problems. Unprepared students sign up for school because they think a degree is a “Pass “ to the middle class, trying to get one step closer to their goal but drops out of college.
The first cause of students dropping out of college is due to the fact that they are unable to balance their work and school together. Students who are working while going to school can often “bash” more than the government’s acceptable hours of work. For an example a student may be working a full time job, that requires them to do physical work and leaves them tired by the end of the work shift. If that student had class later that day, they would not be able to focus on the subject that is being taught in that session. Sometime during working people don’t finish work on time and will finish late, this will also impact the students. If they finish their shift too late and arrives to class late, then the possibility of the being disorientated will be quite high and lethal to the student, due to the fact that they missed the introduction. Continuing to be late forces them to make decisions between school and changing jobs, and in many cases they just end up quitting school. Being unable to balance a student’s work and school may cause that student to drop out of college.
Another reason students drop out of college is because of unexpected family problems. Throughout the years many people get sick and wounded, some are more severe than others. For example, the doctors diagnostic that student’s brother has a brain tumor and predict only have one week left to live.
Going to college gives students the chance to step out of their comfort zone, try new things, and discover who they are while pursuing a degree that may, or may not, interest them. In today’s world if a student drops out of college society assumes they are unintelligent, while in reality they could have come to the realization that being amazing at a trade job is better than being mediocre at a desk job. For some students, dropping out is the culmination of years academic hurdles, missteps, and wrong turns. For others, the decision to drop out is a response to conflicting life pressures -- the need to help support their family financially or the demands of caring for siblings or their own child. They should not drop out of college even when they are having a depression, stress, or difficulty. If they have such those kind of problems, they should go to see a wellness center to talk about. For the purpose of wellness center is to help students who are having a trouble. Students should be brave to reach out to the wellness center and overcome those difficulties with their supporters. First of all, many high school graduates cannot handle college. Isabel V. Sawhill and Stephanie Owen describe college as a place, “one can obtain a traditional four-year bachelor’s degree”. The work load outside of the classroom could be compared to working a full time job. For example, if a student is enrolled in four college courses and is in class a minimum of four hours the student should spend at least four to six hours of studying. It seems as though the majority of college students these days aren’t looking to further their education because it’s what they really want, they do it to please their parents, to be accepted by society, or because there’s nothing else for them to do (Bird, 372). These expectations have led to students being unhappy and stressed, and have pushed them into a school or a job that they don’t particularly care for.
However, dropping out of college is not always negative, in fact, familiar problems can yield positive results. In terms of financial support we know that college costs money, so a lot of students cannot afford it. For example, there are families were the parents are divorced, and one parent has to burden all the family expenses. The amount of hours remaining to focus on their education is preventing them from performing their full potential on their work. Whitmore explains that “Students working full-time also reported the following liabilities: 40 percent report that work limits their class schedule; 36 percent report it reduces their class choices; 30 percent report it limits the number of classes they take; and 26 percent report it limits access to the library.” Since working, students start to prioritize their jobs before their school schedules, their hours initially dedicated to school decreases to accommodate their work schedules. Why do people dropout of high school? There are many reason why people dropout of school. One reason why students dropout is because of something that happens outside of school—they become pregnant, get arrested or have to work to support members of their family.
