Introduction
In Middle School, before taking a big test teachers would always hand out peppermint or a piece of gum. The purpose behind this seemed unclear. However, from further research their was interesting facts about peppermint candy and Big Red cinnamon flavored gum. Peppermint candy is made with the oil of peppermint, which is extracted from the peppermint plant. This is why the candy can have some of the same effects as the oil itself. People believe the brain effects associated with peppermint are related to the scent of the peppermint, rather than the ingestion of it.
Cinnamon is metabolized into sodium benzoate and eating cinnamon significantly elevates the level of sodium benzoate in your brain. Recent studies have shown that sodium benzoate helps with brain function and may prevent neurological disorders. It does this by creating a significant number of chemicals in the brain called neurotropic factors. These factors stimulate the birth of new neurons and encourage the survival of existing neurons. This greatly slows down degenerative diseases of the brain like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
In fact, both peppermint and Big Red gum are said to increase a person’s alertness, motivation, and performance. They also lower fatigue, anxiety, and frustration. This helps the person focus better. Also, scents play an important part. The scent travels to the limbic system in your brain. This area affects your hormones and mood. Important parts of the limbic system are the hypothalamus, the amygdala, and hippocampus. The hypothalamus regulates hormones, the amygdala is responsible for emotion and the hippocampus is important for memory. All of these functions play a part while taking a test.

...argin as Big Red. Some students did better without peppermint or Big Red. However, this was very few. By taking the average it shows the overall trend among the participants.
Discussion
From this experiment it was concluded that the hypothesis was correct. Big Red increased test scores for a majority of students. The background research supported the idea that it increases a person’s alertness, motivation, and performance. This helped the people focus better and raised the test scores. Also, the scents may have influenced the limbic system, which also contributed.
Even though the hypothesis was correct the experiment could be improved. If time had allowed longer tests could have been used. This would prove or disprove the idea that peppermint or Big Red would help aid with fatigue. Also, this test would be more realistic because most are not only two minutes long.
You might find that the dyes on candy are made up of very strange things. For an example, one of the things, red 40, consists of is ground bugs. The dye blue
The peppermint works because when the scent of the peppermint increases oxygen, and blood pressure. Blood brings oxygen to the brain, and if peppermint increases the amount of oxygen in the blood. It then will increase blood pressure, that means the more oxygen traveling to your brain. The more oxygen the brain recieves or is available tothe better you can concentrate and focus. Taste of peppermint can greatly improve memory and can work faster. Smell of peppermint slightly improves memory.
...eous recovery when presented during the test. In this case, the attempt to reduce spontaneous recovery of a conditioned taste aversion is not supported as well as increasing the strength of a conditioned taste aversion.
The theory is that peppermint stimulates the brain in a calm way reducing stress and anxiety. For example Mortensen explains what the theory is, “Peppermint also increased their alertness while helping them maintain a sense of calm.” According to research by Mortensen, even just the scent of peppermint can lighten a stressful atmosphere.(Mortenson, 2015) The theory has been proven as true by the simple fact that the holiday candy stimulates brain activity. For instance Mortenson describes the effect of peppermints to the brain, the hybrid mint increases oxygen and blood pressure and then brings the blood and oxygen to the brain. This oxygen and blood are used and increases concentration and focus. (Mortenson, 2015) The mint used in the experiment has been proven to increase the brain's natural
The results which had been gathered and collected based on the recorded data included, a 0.4℃ increase in body temperature, after the consumption of mild salsa, and a 0.8℃ increase in body temperature, after the consumption of hot or spicy salsa. After group results and data had been calculated and recorded, the group data had signified that there had been minor differences between the calculated body temperatures of the test subject consuming the mild salsa and the test subject consuming the hot salsa. Though minor differences or changes between the body temperatures of the mild salsa eater and the hot salsa eater occurred, the maximum change in ℃ slightly varied with a 0.4℃ maximum change for the mild salsa consumer and a 0.8℃ maximum change for the spicy salsa consumer. Maximum changes which occurred in the class average results included a 0.41 ℃ change for the mild salsa eater and a 0.42 ℃ change for the hot
It’s definitely not a good idea to compromise with the immunity, as it may invite several diseases and infections. The mixture of cinnamon and honey protects us from all such problems. Chewing gum should be allowed in school because it relieve stress and anxiety. To be presented at the 2008 10th International Congress of Behavioral Medicine, found that chewing gum helps relieve anxiety, improve alertness and reduce stress among individuals in a laboratory setting. The evidence explained how gum relieve stress and anxiety. A new study from swinburne University in Melbourne Australia has shown that chewing gum can relieve stress and anxiety. The evidence supports the reason by saying how a study shows how chewing gum can relieve stress and anxiety.
The sesquiterpenes in Frankincense enable it to go beyond the blood brain barrier. It increases the activity of leukocytes in defense of the body against infection.
Medically, marijuana has proven to be a productive drug. Studies show marijuana has helped dealing with “pain, muscle spasms, seizure disorders and nausea from cancer chemotherapy.” (Weir) Scientist believes these benefits come from a chemical compound in marijuana called cannabidiol. This chemical is not the active chemical that gives marijuana users the mind-altering effects. With the unce...
You might guess it’s a custom dreamed up by a modern-day, real-life Willy Wonka, but people have been chewing gum, in various forms, since ancient times. There’s evidence that some northern Europeans were chewing birch bark tar 9,000 years ago, possibly for enjoyment as well as such medicinal purposes as relieving toothaches. The ancient Maya chewed a substance called chicle, derived from the sapodilla tree, as a way to quench thirst or fight hunger, according to “Chicle: The Chewing Gum of the Americas” by Jennifer P. Mathews. The Aztecs also used chicle and even had rules about its social acceptability. Only kids and single women were allowed to chew it in public, notes Mathews. Married women and widows could chew it privately to freshen their breath, while men could chew it in secret to clean their teeth.
If you were to walk down any busy street in today’s America, you would find that many people are chewing gum as they pass by. Men and women of all ages, races, and socioeconomic standings chew gum for a multitude of reasons. They may be chewing gum to kick an addiction like smoking or biting their fingernails, to freshen their breath, to just pass the time, or some people even find it helps them to focus on the task at hand. Gum is a staple in America’s society-it’s a 19 billion dollar industry in the U.S. alone with the average person chewing 280 sticks a year, (“Chewing Gum Statistics”)- but the way in which it became so may be much more fascinating than you think.
