A lot of people have an incorrect thought of a hero. They think a hero is somebody in tights and a cape who uses superpowers to save people. A hero is not only that, and it not just a man or women who goes out and saves people. Yes, that may be a hero however, heroes can be normal people who do an outstanding thing in the community. Jimmy Carter did not go out saving individual lives, but he changed the way we take care of hostage situations which has over the years saved a lot of lives. President Carter not only change the hostage situations he also created two cabinet departments, the department of Energy and the department of Education, both of which are extremely successful, and much needed.
James Earl Carter Jr. was born on October 1st, 1924 in the small farming town of Plains, Georgia. He grew up near Plains, in the small community of Archer, with his Father James Earl Carter Sr. and his mother Lillian Gordy Carter. His father was a well-known business man in the state of Georgia, and his mother was a nurse. Jimmy was one of four children; Billy, Ruth, and Gloria. He was educated in the public school system of Georgia through high school. After high school he attended Georgia Southwestern College, and the Georgia Institute of Technology. In 1946 he received his Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Naval Academy. After graduating from the Naval Academy he became a lieutenant submariner in both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets. He surpassed all expectations and was chosen for a nuclear submarine program where he was taught how to operate the first two atomically powered submarines. Carter was promoted to Senior Officer and was placed in command of the second nuclear submarine, the Sea Wolf.

Jimmy Carter is an American Hero because of how he established the two departments and made the new format of dealing with hostage situations, and because of his efforts of trying to bring peace to the Middle East. He has done so many things that has changed the world and has helped other people. He placed others before himself and that is the definition of a true American hero.

Most likely, you picture a strong and imposeing figure, someone capable of performing in high pressure situations, demonstrating bravery and passion to help his/her fellow man. Those who typically fit that role in society are firefighters, policemen, and soldiers. Those people deserve all the credit and recognition they receive for their courageous acts. However, what about individuals or groups who aren’t necessarily on the “frontlines” physically protecting others and saving lives, but who work extremely hard to improve the lives of others in some way? These everyday people deserve credit as well. After all, to the people they help, these volunteers or activists are heroes. An example of such a group is the Greensboro Four, a few African American college students in the early 1960s who helped change the landscape of segregation in the Jim Crow South.

Being a hero means to be willing to risk your life for others. Such as, Pat Tillman. Pat Tillman was a fantastic football player and he loved playing it too. When I think of an American Hero I immediately think of someone who is strong, intelligent, handsome, and daring. Upon closer examination, many different qualities than these become apparent. Courage, honesty, bravery, selflessness, and the will to try are just a few of the overlooked qualities of an American Hero. The definition of heroism changes with the context and time. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines heroism as "heroic conduct especially as exhibited in fulfilling a high purpose or attaining a noble end; the qualities of a hero". Heroes of the past are not necessarily heroes of present time and vise versa.
