History of Microsoft

During the early seventies, type writers were the means of copying documents. Very few people knew anything about or heard of microcomputers. This all changed when two young computer enthusiasts, Paul Allen and Bill Gates, discovered a way to make computers more personal. In 1975, Microsoft, the partnership between Gates and Allen, began. It started off as a small business with high hopes of growing into an empire. There end goal was to get a personal computer into every house and change the way we work.

IBM was the world leader in main framing computing, but wanted to enter the personal computer industry. They needed to find a software operating system to fit their technology. IBM would decide to partner with Microsoft. However, it wasn’t until 1983 that Microsoft was officially announced but still required more time to develop. In 1985 windows 1.0 was released. Its innovative different screens and clicking was a huge change of pace from the computers that used MS-DOS commands. Bill Gates said that the importance of Microsoft 1.0 was that “It is unique software designed for the serious PC user.” Other features such as drop-down menus, scroll bars, icons, and dialog boxes. These features made navigation much easier for users. (Schroeder, 2000)
