Big Brother: Problem and Solution

Big Brother: an all-powerful government or organization monitoring and directing people's actions. When a government steps beyond its boundary of privacy and into the lives of the people it governs, the result is a “Big Brother” society. Although Americans live in a democracy, their government takes steps towards more totalitarian ideologies. All of a sudden, rights become privileges, safety becomes surveillance, and Americans lose freedom. Their government misleads them to believe that they aren't being mistreated by their government, and most of the Americans swallow it. The government of the United States manipulates the citizens by instituting socialistic principles; however, by examining and revolting, a more democratic America will arise. Deception is the most powerful tool used by the government to keep the Americans unaware about how they are being mistreated. Imagine an individual whom is taught that they live in the only country in the world. We will call this person Winston. Since all of the competition has been conquered, there are no competitors. It is reasonable to assume that Winston cannot object to what he has been taught. Until the truth is unveiled to him, he will have no reason to question what he was raised to believe: his country is number one. In Oceania, the citizens were raised the same way as Winston. How could they have known any better than what they were told until they were given evidence to make them question what they believed? “WAR IS PEACE: FREEDOM IS SLAVERY: IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH.” (Orwell 16). Although the idea that “war is peace” sounds ridiculous to the average English speaker, anybody who was raised to believe “war is peace” believes that statement is true.
