Beowulf: A Hero
Beowulf is a hero during the Middle Ages because of his generosity, strength, power, and courage. A hero is one who places himself or herself at great risk while performing acts of courage. Beowulf is a hero that put his life on the line for an entire kingdom. He has heroic and superhuman qualities. He must prove his worthiness of a superior warrior. He is recognized for his strengths and power of protecting his people. Beowulf is faced with three forces to fight, Grendel (a monster), Grendel?s mother, and the dragon. Beowulf becomes the king of the Geats for fifty years and eventually dies in a battle against a dragon.
Beowulf is first introduced when he hears about the troubles that the Danes are having with some evil monster named Grendel. Although Beowulf knows that he could be killed, he still packs up his belonging, some of his men, and leaves the Geats to go help the Danes. He lets the king know that he would like to fight the evil monster, in hopes to be honored. There
are many reasons and attributes that qualify Beowulf as the ultimate hero.
Beowulf is generous to others. ?I come to proffer my wholehearted help and counsel,? said Beowulf as he arrived to fight the monster that was destroying the Danes (l. 277). He has come to help fight for the Danes and protect their people. The quote is describing Beowulf?s reason for arriving on new land. The generous love that Beowulf has for others is an important attribute that features his heroism. He must care for others to be able to protect them. Beowulf did not have to offer Hrothgar?s kingdom help, but did so out of his own courtesy in protecting and fighting for others as well as himself.
One of Beowulf?s main qualities is his strength. He has a grea...

...angerous fights. Although Beowulf knew he would die if he tried to fight the dragon, he still fought. His
courage kept him going and that is what completes a hero. Beowulf had plenty of courage, most men his age would have backed down and not fought, but Beowulf being the brave man he was, stood up in hopes to still protect his people.
Beowulf is a courageous and strong hero because he shows all of the qualities and traits that a true hero should possess. His actions toward Grendel show that he is willing to help others. Beowulf defeats Grendel, his mother, and a dragon until seriously injured. Beowulf has all of the characteristics that are expected from a hero. I definitely consider Beowulf being a hero because there are no other men who could accomplish all of the things that he did. He is a hero for many reasons, his bravery, generosity, strength, and power.
