Think back to when you were a high-school freshman and in PE. You look around and realize that many of your classmates are much more athletic than you could ever dream of being. You try your best and don’t want to seem like a quitter. But, you finally realize you just aren’t as wonderful as them and honestly do not enjoy sports at all. All of your friends’ play and your parents have always encouraged you to do well in sports and to be the best. You know there are other opportunities out there for you, but you don’t feel as popular just being satisfactory in school. In today’s world, high schoolers are constantly under pressure to do well in sports, but not necessarily in school. Life lessons, like acquiring a job or just being an overall quality person fly out the window. Many children play sports in hopes of becoming a star one day. While this is considered cute at a young age, it isn’t realistic for every high school student. There is such a small percentage of kids that actually play college and pro sports that it just isn’t practical for a child to pin all their hopes and dreams on it, especially if they aren’t that fabulous. According to the NCAA, of about 8 million high school athletes in the US, only 460,000 will go one to play college sports (“Probability”). Parents need to be honest with their child about their potential and help to realize that they could accomplish other things. Not everyone is cut out to an all-star athlete, but they may be a great entrepreneur. The largest mistake most kids is making such lofty goals in sports that they forget about their schoolwork. Jason Taylor, Tim Tebow, Maria Sharapova, and Serena and Venus Williams are all homeschooled students who became professional athletes. Homeschool students, as well as public school students, are both taking the same subjects throughout their high school career. Sports are a common past time that students should be able to compete in everywhere. Should homeschool students be allowed to participate in public school sports? Homeschooled students should be able to participate in public school sports because athletes have no exposure from colleges, not enough participants for their own leagues, and homeschool parents pay taxes for public schools.
Throughout school I was never really athletic. While I excelled in all my academic and artistic classes, I barely scraped by in gym class. My parents forced me to join soccer and cheerleading as a child, in hopes that I would find something I was good at, but I would complain about it until, ultimately, they’d allow me to quit. Needless to say, I never really understood the fuss about high school sports. In Amanda Ripley’s article, “The Case Against High School Sports,” she argues that the craze over high school sports may actually be harming American school systems.
Athletics in American schools have always been controversial for many reasons. Some of these reasons include health concerns, safety precautions, and academic significance. Daniel H. Bowen and Colin Hitt wrote an article titled, “High-School Sports Aren’t Killing Academics” to present the factors of positive correlation between success in athletics and academics. I believe that athletics in high schools not only benefit students socially, but also academically.
High School sports are not beneficial because they have more cons than pros. There are reasons like the pressure from the parents is too much and that could lead to stress, also the equipment is based off college sports and are not as fit for younger bodies of the high school students. On the plus side they have shown to be good for education. People who play high school sports have high grades but that doesn’t mean that students who don’t play sports can’t have high grades also.
Are high school sports beneficial or non-beneficial for students? I personally believe if a student is in a high school sport they’re forced to prioritize between school and their sport, and at a young age I believe the student would decide to use his time to improve in his sport instead of school. Which in the long run would affect his academics, unless they decide to stay up late and work on their homework to keep up with both school and their sport. But, even like that in time the lack of sleep would catch up to them, and cause them to do even worse in both academics, and sports. High school sports are like the lotto in my opinion, many play but only a few get rewarded for their work. Therefore, high school sports cause more negativity than positivity.
High school sports are approached with clashing opinions. Some of these opinions are positive, and supportive of athletics. “Athleticism, among many activities, offers teens a physical outlet to exert their troubles, anger, emotions, and other feelings” (Chen 1). This can be observed in nearly all of the football players in Friday Night Lights. This can also be noticed in the world today. “Athletics help high school students understand their own abilities and talents” (Chen 1). This piece of evidence is very accurate when describing high school athletes. Sports can make a high school student humble. As can be seen by the preceding information, high school athletics can have a positive impact on a student’s life.
Over time and especially today, there has been a common misconception that students who participate in athletics or team sports are more likely to be less accomplished (in terms of academic success) than those students who are not and John R. Gerdy’s “Americas Failed Experiment with Elite Athletics” is a prime example of this false belief. Teachers and faculty members often devalue athletics and some even feel that it is a poor representation of such. Often time’s parents or guardians are reluctant or in opposition to allowing their children to get involved in sports because they believe it will derail their learning and/or achievement in school. For many children, professional sports is their dream job. They spend much time learning and improving their game to follow their passion. But before they can advance to the professional level, prospects must spend time in college to improve academically and athletically. Unfortunately, many players go through hard times during these years. Youth sports are a very important part of a child’s development. Youth sports allows kids to grow as a people and to learn important life lessons. However, kids are being forced, and pushed in sports at too young of an age by their parents. With more and more children participating in some sort of organized sport than ever before, there is a constant concern regarding the pressures kids are brought into to excel. Emotionally over-involved parents often think that it is their responsibility to persuade, push, or support the children's fantasies or sporting objectives, even if the kids themselves do not share the same aspirations as his/her parents. At some point students has had trouble either at home or at school and need to release stress or tension. Some of these times the teens choose to do activities that are wrong. Youth want to feel comfort and accepted, therefore they sometimes will do events that are not well for their body just to fit in with a group. There is evidence that proves sports can reduce the likeliness of teens committing crimes, or getting into trouble. Tees look at the negative substances such as drugs, alcohol, or tobacco, and think that they can do whatever they want. Many teens look at these activities and think they are “exciting” or “cool” and want to try them, but if they are busy with sports they most likely will not be as easily influenced. Participation in sports helps keep teens out of trouble by taking up their free time which could be used for mischief, gives them an opportunity to meet new friends for positive role models, provides teens an outlet to develop a higher self-esteem, and also enables student to set goals for on and off the field.

In addition, a game similar to soccer was played in China by the second century BC. In England, a violent rugby type game was even played to settle feuds between villages.
