Benefits of Music Education

Obtaining musical knowledge gives children skills and experiences that carry through all aspects of life. However, school boards across the country have made the choice to cut music education due to small budgets, focus on core subjects, or supposed lack of interest. Low-income schools, such as Haven Elementary School, located in Savannah, Georgia and other similar schools in California, have had to make the decision to drastically reduce the amount of time spent in art-related classrooms or cut the classes all together. These students are suffering for their lack of music education; while not readily apparent to many students, teachers, and parents, studies have constantly proven that music education benefits students in numerous ways. Every aspect of life revolves around music; a person's past and present connects to music, whether it's a beloved song or a precious memory. Therefore, it should be learned and shared with others- not taken away. Music provides many benefits in the lives of children, making cuts detrimental to their education.
Although it seems as though there are many opportunities for music in schools today, struggles continue behind the scenes. Many schools have had to cut their music programs during the most recent recession. For example, a district in California that once had 124,000 music students dropped to 64,000 within a few years; this trend has become unfortunately common in order to save money (Benham). However, the redistribution of students once involved in arts education into other areas of study has actually proven to be more costly, with an average of $36,000 directed towards the hiring of more teachers (Benham).
