According to the Oxford Lafayette Humane Society website on average every single day ten thousand cats and dogs euthanized in the United States alone. Most of these animals were perfectly healthy, normal, and suitable pets that were never adopted yet were euthanized due to over population. Humans have kept pets ever since ancient times. Centuries ago they were mostly kept for food, source of material such as fur, and hunting aids, but now a days they are companions and the thought of killing, eating, and wearing them sounds senseless. In this fast paced modern age filled with stress every needs a source of relief. Most people turn to medicinal or recreational drugs and alcohol. However there are much better and healthier alternatives such as owning a pet. A pets can be just as good as any drug in relieving stress and anxiety. Although it’s not all easy in the end it’s all more than worth it. Owning a pet is a remarkable experience and more people should experience the joy and benefits that comes with it but as with anything there are some obstacles and drawbacks that may seem daunting but can be easily prevented or worked through.
Can owning pets make unhappy and unhealthy? While unlikely it is possible. Pets can carry a variety of diseases and parasites that can easily spread to their owner and its family. ... lifetime of love and compassion. There is a pet for everybody no matter who they are. There are more than enough pets to go around and many different species to fit all types of personalities and lifestyles. Pets offer extraordinary benefits for their owner that will improve many aspects of their lives. Unfortunately many of these benefits are unknown to post people and instead they are influenced by misconceptions that make owning a pet seem less desirable. If anything is learned from this paper it is that owning a pet is an absolutely amazing experience that more people should experience. It is unfortunate that some people are robbed of this opportunity by misconception spread by uninformed people. Hopefully in the future people will reconsider adopting a pet or at least take the time to talk to somebody about adoption and saving a life while improving theirs.
“As the birthrate dropped, pets came to take the place of children in some families.” I think this means that pets are basically replacing children in some people's lives. In his article, Bilger says that a man refused to come back from Europe when his son died of a brain tumor, but he had a vet flown in when his dog got cancer. Would you like to live a happy and productive life? Then get pets! I must admit it is hard to believe that domesticated animals can promote mental and physical health, but many studies have shown that they can. On the other hand, you must find a pet that is compatible with you or with your life style. Maintaining good mental health is crucial for living a "normal" life.
There can be no doubt that shelters in the United States are overcrowded, feral cats roam our city streets, thousands of dogs live in grotesque conditions in puppy mills across the country, and yet most American citizens when polled will readily declare that their cat or dog is like ‘a member of the family’. The state of companion animals in this country is precarious at best; caught between scientists who subscribe to Descartes’s idea of ‘anima ex machina’ (unfeeling, a living example of biological processes without the status of ‘being’) and the more common phenomenon of people who pamper their pets in ways that most people would envy. For most individuals living in an urban society such as ours, the most common interaction with animals happens within the home – if the animals that we relate to and interact with the most continue to be abandoned and mistreated on a large scale, there must be some solution that involves more than just building more animal shelters or performing euthanasia more liberally.
Dogs have been a very popular domestic pet amongst people in different countries for many years. The most common reason for people to own a dog is to have a companion to play with, bond with, and to spend time with. Not only are dogs true companions, they are also beneficial to have in terms of health. Most people, including myself, who do own a dog, are not aware of the tremendous impact these dogs have on one’s psychological, physiological and sociological health. In the following research paper I will discuss how dog ownership can help reduce stress related disorders, physiological illnesses and how dogs affect people’s social lives.
Countless lives locked away in cages and forgotten about have overwhelmed our society, it has left blood stains on our history as a species and if history has taught us anything, it’s that we have a choice to change our ways of adjusting to situations. A war which was fought in pursuit of ending such criminal means, yet we as human beings do little to nothing to end the horrific crimes of animal deaths in shelters. It is no secret that this world has become infused with problems that have extended from one side of the globe to the other. Amongst these problems lies a terrible truth: nearly every year, sums of almost eight million cats and dogs have been placed in shelters around the world. Out of these vast numbers, half will be euthanized; that equals to one animal being put down every 8 seconds. Animals that are not adopted are kept in shelters until they find a home. Most of these shelters do not have enough space or resources to care for the animal. Only 15% of dogs and 2% of cats that enter animal shelters are reunited with their owners. The majority of pets are obtained from acquaintances and family members. Twenty-six percent of dogs are purchased from breeders, 20 to 30 percent of cats and dogs are adopted from shelters and rescues, and 2 to 10 percent are purchased from pet shops. In addition, only 56% of dogs and 71% of cats that enter animal shelters are euthanized. “A dog is a man’s best friend” goes much deeper than the phrase might initially imply. Recently many medical journals have begun to identify with the many and varied benefits of pet ownership. Men have always relied upon animals for work, transportation, and survival. As times have changed, man has begun to appreciate a different bond with animals. Gone are the days of animals running free outside around the homestead, for now animals are allowed inside and are considered by many to be an integral part of our daily lives! Medical studies have found that animals have a much greater intelligence level than originally thought. Through proper training and experience, animals are not only household pets, but also are becoming an accepted form of medical treatment.
Each year, approximately 6-8 million animals enter shelters in the United States alone after finding themselves without a home (“Why you,” n.d.). This is an extremely large amount of animals that are not wanted and the biggest way you can help is to spay and neuter your pets, and encourage others to do the same. Nationwide there are more than 3-4 million dogs and cats who are healthy and ready for adoption, but are sadly euthanized due to overpopulation (Bushby & Griffin, 2011). No matter how responsible you are as a pet owner, you never know when your dog or cat may sneak out and the only way to be sure you do not contribute to this extreme overpopulation is to spay or neuter your pet (“Why you,” n.d.). There are many reasons aside from overpopulation that neutering is beneficial, including the reduction of behavioral problems and health concerns.
Over 71 million American households (62%) have a pet, and most people think of their pets as members of the family. Some research studies have found that people who have a pet have healthier hearts, stay home sick less often, make fewer visits to the doctor, get more exercise, and are less depressed. Pets may also have a significant impact on allergies, asthma, social support, and social interactions with other people (Casciotti) .
Animals are not valued enough: Many forget that animals have feelings too. We tend to overlook the benefits of having a pet. Allen R. McConnell, Ph.D., a professor of Psychology at the university of Miami published an online journal in 2011, about research on pet ownership, “Pets provide meaningful social support for owners, improving their lives. Whereas some past research found that people facing serious health challenges are better with pets, the current work found that everyday people can benefit from pet ownership as well” (Friends with Benefits: Pets Make Us Happier, Healthier). Maintaining good mental health is crucial for living a normal life.
Nowadays, people are busy in their daily life and having a lot of stress from their working area. Most of them would like to have a pet to accompany them in their daily life and also can release the stress that they received. For example, having a dog is a good choice for most people who want to have a pet. Dog not only a very good companions and also having deep emotional tie between people. Dogs will protect the people with literally lay down their lives.
Can you hear the cries of those who do not communicate in the human language? How about the fearful mewing of a motherless kitten? Do you worry for the exhaustion of a donkey, staggering under a load to heavy to bear. Does your heart skip a beat when you hear the whimpering of a lost puppy? Are you filled with sadness when you an animal that has been hit by a car? Do you take in strays and feed them because they are all skin and bones? If so you are a pet lover. You would never hurt a pet. You know the importance of taking care of a pet. Taking care of your pets is a responsibility that you need to have. Pet care involves going the veterinarian, a nutritious diet, and plenty of exercise.
