A world-class engineering student, also known as an “expert learner,” is characterized by taking charge of their learning process, being active in their approach to learning, being motivated and disciplined as well as setting specific goals for themself. Becoming a world-class engineering student is a process that takes time and diligence. In order to become a world-class engineering student, I will have to identify where I stand currently in terms of goal setting, community building, academic development and personal development, where a world-class engineering student would be in each of those areas, and what I have to do in order to become a world-class engineering student. Goals give you something to measure yourself against and give you direction. Currently, my main goal is to graduate from East Carolina University with a bachelor’s degree of science in engineering with a concentration in biomedical engineering. My anticipated time to graduation is five years with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Beyond getting my bachelor’s degree at East Carolina University, I would like to go to medical school and become a doctor focusing on prosthetics. In order to make my goals a reality, I will have to work diligently to remain on track throughout my schooling. Additional goals that I have set for myself are to complete homework assignments by the time they are due, reading assigned material before it is discussed in class, doing well in each of my courses this semester, successfully participating in extracurricular activities, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in engineering, getting a position as an engineer, and becoming a leader within both the engineering community and the general community. In order to become a world-class engineering student, I will have to continue to be conscious of academic dishonest behavior, alerting my professors if I am witness to its occurrence and deterring myself from it, in addition to familiarizing myself with the professional ethical codes related to engineering as engineers are expected to exhibit these fundamental principles when fulfilling their professional duties. To clarify, the Engineering Code of Ethics is the set of rules established by the National Society of Professional Engineers that all engineers are expected to adhere to. In essence, the fundamental tenets of this code are that all engineers are expected to prioritize public safety, as well as be honest with their clients and the general public while only doing work that they are qualified to do. (“Code of Ethics,” n.d.). The reason this code is crucial in this case is because it offers guiding principles for the men and women who are in charge of so many of the various structures and buildings that are used by everyone in society. If the engineering population were to fail to adhere to this code, many people’s lives would be put in jeopardy; buildings might crumble, planes may crash, and bridges could collapse. This means that this code serves to keep engineers in check so that the world maintains stability, therefore its importance cannot be emphasized enough. Furthermore, since this code is nationally recognized, if a company’s engineers were to violate any aspect of it, it would be seen nation-wide as a misuse of power for the sake
When reading “An Engineering Career: Only a Young Person’s Game?” by Robert N. Charette, we are able to grasp the meaning behind the half-life engineering knowledge and how it affects the general engineer in the workplace. Charette also provides other articles that will give tips on how to use lifelong learning to counter the effect of becoming obsolete in your knowledge.
The Software Engineering Code of Ethics and Professional Practice is the public policy developed by the IEEE Computer Society (CS) and the Association of Computer Machinery (ACM). The IEEE-CS is dedicated to “advancing the theory, practice, and application, of computer and information processing technology.” 3 With more than 100,000 members, it hails itself as the world's leading organization of computer professionals. The ACM serves the same purpose as the IEEE-CS but also encompasses membership for computing students. Both organizations are highly respected among the engineering community and both include membership and offices worldwide.
At Penn football games, when the band sings, “Here’s a toast to dear old Penn,” slices of toast rain from the stands, blanketing the football field and track. To ease the cleanup effort, a few of Penn’s engineering students created the “toast Zamboni.” These students—who were capable of identifying a problem, designing a solution, implementing the final product, and improving an aspect of life—embody what I hope to achieve by studying engineering at Penn.
Possessing the basic knowledge in the field of physical sciences and the intuition in them made me to pick up Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as my majors for the Higher Secondary Education. After the completion of my secondary education, I felt that engineering was the only field which can transform and transfer my dreams in the field of sciences into a real one and also it would give me an opportunity to learn and explore how the fundamentals of science are appl...
Every job involves certain skills and abilities, depending on which engineering path a person chooses to pursue. Important skills such as listening to what others are saying, taking time to understand and comprehend what they mean and want, and asking que...
Another reason students should be taught the standards set out in the codes of ethics is that the codes offer them help and advice in many situations. Martin and Schinzinger sums up the functions of the codes [2]; firstly they say that the codes provide inspiration and guidance to engineers. This guidance helps engineers in problematic situations, and also encourages how engineers should represent their profession in public. They also tell engineers that they need to thin...
Ethics refer to those habits or standards that are considered to show good character and conduct. In the professional practice of engineering, engineers are confronted with different ethical issues and interpersonal conflicts. These cases could range from a small scale involving few people to larger conflicts where the outcome influences the engineering community and the society at large. Classically, engineering education does not duly address the needs for ethical education to be incorporated into the technical curriculum. However, it has become axiomatic that engineers must exhibit good ethical behavior because safety of the people and the environment rely on the quality of the designs/services that engineers provide.
Engineering ethics focuses on the behavior of the individual - the engineer, and the development of ethical standards governing their professional activities. Engineering ethics has always existed as a set of rules or a system that governs the behavior of an engineer. Among its main provisions, we can attribute such as the need to faithfully perform engineering work that would bring welfare and do not cause harm to people; be accountable for engineering professional activities; a good relationship ( customs and rules governing relations ) with other engineer, etc.
Engineering has been a key interest of mine since childhood. While still in grade school I enjoyed listening to my father, an electrical engineer, teach me about advances in technology, and was always eager to hear more. I was introduced to my first computer at the age of five, and have loved interacting with them ever since. My decision to study engineering as a career was no surprise to those who knew me.
Ever since I was young, I have always enjoyed making and building projects more than any other pastime. There are no limits to what can be built and there are many tools available to complete. If the tool is not in a personal inventory, there 's always someone around from whom the tool can be borrowed. Building teaches how something works and operates. After building a project, the builder then knows what every part of that system of parts does. Engineering is my dream job; it gives the opportunity to design new components and to see creativity in an operating system. Engineers are the ones who design many of the modern convenience of today 's society. Thus, in the field of engineering, there is no limit for a top job and even the best inventions in the world could use improvements in their designs.
Engineering ethics can be described as moral principles that are applied to the engineering practice (Van et al, 2011). Engineering bodies, such as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, conducts field examines and set obligations that engineers are supposed to fulfill, to their clients, society and professi...
The function of the code of ethics for engineer is to guide engineer from do the unethical activities. When there are engineer that do the unethical activities, other people or the public will have bad thoughts to all engineer because it is like a custom for people to see one and two example and jump to conclusion that engineer like to do unethical activities. There are five code of ethics for engineer follow and make it as guidelines. The first code of ethics is hold paramount the safety, health and welfare of public. The engineers should not reveal facts, data or information without the permission of the customer except as authorized or required by law or the Code. Second, perform services only in areas of their competence, engineer should take the project or task that they qualified by experience or education in the specific field. They should not take project that they are not a master at that field and do the project without the guide of the master. This act will make other will in danger. Next, engineers should issue public statements only in an objective and truthful manner. The engineer may express publicly technical opinions that are founded upon knowledge of the facts and competence in the subject
Obstacles had never been obstructing my effort to succeed in life. As an engineer to be, it is important to me to be prepared for the hurdles in the real world. The world nowadays needs a person who could compete and has great abilities to stand on the same level as others. Multiple skills and critical opinion of an issue are essential for an engineer to jump into this challenging career. For me, a strategic planning and full preparation need to achieve the aim of being an expert engineer.
Right from my school days, I have always shown a high degree of competence and interest in subjects like Mathematics and Science. I scored 88 marks in Mathematics & 84 marks in Science in Secondary School (10th standard). It was with this motivation that I took up the Science stream in my senior school. I completed my senior school with first class grade. My fairly good performance at secondary and senior school gave me the confidence to take Engineering as my career.
