Testing is important because it is one of the ways to evaluate our performance in school as well as in regular activities such as obtaining a drivers license, employment etc, but it can create high levels of anxiety to the test taker. Stress is usually a result of misconception of what is on the test, as well as the preparation of the test taker. In order to have a successful test taking experience, it is important to implement test taking strategies. We will cover a few to help you have a positive testing experience. Arrive on Time Arrive at the exam location on time, this way you can obtain the seat of your choice with out rushing. This gives you time to sit back and relax. It is important not to be extremely early because you might become nervous, and anxious waiting to start the te...
Many students face at least one important test in their life. And if that particular student is one of the many that experience test anxiety, this can affect the students test scores. Test anxiety can be caused by the lack of preparation by the student, but it could be caused by the fear of failure as well. Students have so much resting on college and their ability to do well, such as a good paying job to be able to support themselves. Test anxiety causes nausea, light-headedness, and it could even cause the student to have a panic attack. Students that have severe test anxiety do not have a fair advantage (ADAA,
I am not a terrible test taker (situation), but I do experience slight anxiety (emotional reaction) whenever they arise. Usually the first thing that pops into my head (automatic thought) is that I will do poorly and receive a failing grade. This in turn causes my
Psychology test do not have to be a stressful thing; test scores can go up with just a few changes by the professor. In Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, Daniel H. Pink explains that Motivation 3.0 Autonomy is giving a person the freedom to do things in their own way which produces better result because Motivation 3.0 “presumes that people want to be accountable-and making sure they have control over their task, their time, their technique, and their team in the most effective pathway to the destination” (105). Psychology professors should consider giving their students more autonomy with regards to test taking so that the students can choose the method that best fits their learning style. Professors can do this by giving the students options on what style of test they want, where they would like to take it, and how long would best fit them.
Test anxiety can be studied as both trait and state construct. State test anxiety refers to emotional distress in specific academic setting. Common situational factors include lower self-confidence for the specific test or an awareness of being not adequately prepared for the exam (Schwarzer & Jerusalem, 1992; Zohar, 1998). The trait test anxiety presents relatively stable individual differences in frequency and intensity of emotional response in test setting (Spielberger, 1972). Trait level of test anxiety is usually assessed by questionnaires. There are several questionnaires and scales of test anxiety upon which factor str...
Fear is used as the umbrella term for a seemingly innumerable amount of emotions and traits, namely because fear presents itself in a number of ways. If you have ever experienced any anxiety or phobia then you have encountered something that you are afraid of and that feeling was produced by fear. The purpose of this essay is to introduce the reader to a specific kind of terror, and that is “testophobia” or test anxiety that can be brought on by an apprehension of failure.
When it comes to preparing for and taking tests we must avoid the myths and manage our time wisely. By doing so we can avoid test anxiety. Students we must make sure that we use all of our tools and resources available to make our learning experience a enjoyable one.
When it comes to taking tests I normally do not stress over them. I go into it with a good and open mindset that I am going to pass with flying colors. If I stress before I even begin the test, then my whole mindset will be thrown off and it makes it hard for me to concentrate. I have to be in a quiet room by myself in order to take tests/quizzes. I do have a tendency to stress when a test is timed. For example, I am taking a timed test that has 40 questions and I have five minutes left but I’ve only answered one-fourth of the questions. I will then become a little worried that I will not get done with the test. As far as when taking short answer or essay tests I will become stressed and overwhelmed. Short answer and essay tests/quizzes are my least favorite tests to take.

Students and teachers both can have anxiety about testing. Teachers can be worried about the students’ performance on a test – a test that does not measure a student’s intelligence unless the student is good at taking tests. A student might be a gifted musician, artist, or athlete, but if they do not pass a standardized test, they are considered unfit for most colleges. Moreover, since the test is so important and they do not want to fail, students might be nervous while taking this test and because of this, they might not perform as well as they could. Also, a student’s self-esteem and self-worth can be lowered if they do not do well on a standardized test. This can be for two different reasons. One, a student might have thought they had done better on the test and the results could not be what they expected and they could feel like a failure. This can cause a student’s self-esteem to be lowered. Two, they might become worried about their future if they don’t receive a high score. There are many students who have the pressure of their family to do well and if they do not, they might become depressed. Even President Obama thought that standardized testing was not a good way to do things. Taken from an article written by Jonathan Glover (2016) of The
Standardized testing is something all students and teachers dread. The weeks leading up to the tests are filled with teachers stressing about grants and their jobs both of which are riding on students success; students worrying about being able to pass the test to move on to the next grade, giving the state a bad impression about their teachers, and if their scores on these tests will affect their chances of going to college. This is what the states standardized tests are doing to instructors and pupils all across the country. Researchers at Bowling Green State University in Ohio found that two out of three surveyed elementary school students said that proficiency testing caused excess stress, and three out of four secondary students shared that belief. (Edwards)
According to the American Institute of Stress, stress can be defined as an individual’s response, physical, mental or emotional, to an event that causes a demand for change (Selye, 1936). For athletes, that demand for change can be caused by an injury, which ultimately can have a significant impact on overall stress levels. While a physical injury can cause psychological stress, mental trauma can similarly affect an athlete physically. An athlete’s psychological stability has a great affect on an athlete’s susceptibility to pain and can alter the response to and recovery from an injury (Ahern, 1997).
Dealing With Stress Before we look at different methods of dealing with stress we must first define stress and find out what causes stress. There are 3 definitions of stress: 1. The response definition: this is Selye's approach; it means that any stimulus that causes a stress response is by definition, a stressor. 2.
The test taking lessons have helped me learn more about having good strategies for a test. I feel that with these lessons learned I can have more confidence to take a test and pass it. In this report I want to show why test taking is an important skill to learn. I also wanted to describe how I have prepared for test in the past. I also wanted to discuss three strategies I have learned from the computer tutorial in class and how I have changed my study habits so I can do better on test.
The inclusion of the importance of high stakes testing outlines the benefits of high stakes testing, as well as how it effects teachers and students. High stakes testing helps make changes to a more standardized curriculum throughout the country (David, 2013). A standardized curriculum means that students transferring between states will receive the same education across the board. High stakes testing can also teach students confidence (Dankiw, Johanson, Loder, & Watson, 2014). Though students can be stressed out during the testing process, they can have a sense of accomplishment and a confidence boost if they feel they have done well. This confidence will be validated when the student receives their results. High stakes testing also teaches students, especially those who are behind academically, test taking skills. It is highly important for students to understand the language used on the test. Students also benefit from practicing test taking strategies such as eliminating
The other component of test anxiety is the psychological component, which has to do with worry about performance. This excessive worrying about performance interferes with the ability of students to read accurately and understand the materials they are reading. One way to reduce this component is for students to direct their worry into studying rather than directing it into taking the test.
