*Non-conformist fashion Clothes were designed with the intention of displaying wealth. Sequins, designer brands and showy jewellery were used to promote an image of wealth and success.
Coming back to success, the 1980`s power suit (sharp-cut suits w. wide shoulders) were popular in the workplace to impress an air of power and intimidation. This was also popular with women, who had recently gained the right to work with equal pay to men and were eager to prove themselves.
Celebrities such as Madonna encouraged more risqué fashion trends such as visible underwear, while Michael Jackson also held influence over teenage boys fashion. Popular movies and television shows such as Flashdance(1983) and Dynasty also helped influence trends.
Fitness became an important part of the Australian lifestyle, as a direct result of materialism and celebrity influence. People began focusing more on fitness in order to look better and stay in shape. Fitness clothes, popularised by singers such as Olivia-Newton John, were in bright colours and stretchy fabrics, completed with 80`s fashion staples such as legwarmers and headbands. The look soon gained popularity due to its convenience.
Punk-inspired fashion developed as a rebellion against both the idealism of the hippie subculture, but also the heavily materialistic climate of the 1980`s. This ever changing timeline of fashion provokes the question: what is the cause of such differing styles? By considering the state of society throughout the era, it can be seen that clothing directly correlates with the current way of life. Specifically, American women’s fashion of the 1920’s and 1930’s proves to not simply be a meaningless trend – but rather an accurate reflection of the specific era. As the stock market booms and society prospers, women’s fashion undergoes drastic change during the 1920’s.

If we didn’t have fashion then a lot of people wouldn’t have jobs because there are a whole bunch of fashion designers out there, also all of the celebrities wouldn’t have name brand clothing because there would be no way to make them because we wouldn’t have designers. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in the 1980’s? The crazy hair styles, the new and improved things that were being created made this time alive, and fun. To be born in the 1980’s would have a been a privilege, who wouldn’t want to be known as “The decade that defined…. “US!” The 1980s was a decade that began on January 1, 1980, and ended on December 31, 1989. This decade was a great social and economic time period for people living in the 80’s. The world was becoming more developed as well as everyone in it. This decade became the “Look at me” generation of status seekers. The 80’s made a new breed of billionaires and money makers. “The decade began with double-digit inflation, Reagan declared a war on drugs, Kermit didn't find it easy to be green, hospital costs rose, we lost many, many of our finest talents to AIDS which before the decade ended spread to black and Hispanic women, and unemployment rose,” according to Peggy Whitely of Lone Star College. Although this time seemed like all fun and games, there were many problems. People say we lost the meaning of “We” and it suddenly became “I.” Citizens were realizing that you couldn’t depend on others around you; they were coming up with new ideas, and inventions to allow things to be more efficient. Although the 1980’s suffered a huge change for the American people, the fads and fashion part of the people strived, as well as the inventions. These two things will be some of the most historical, yet fascinating parts of the 80’s generation in American History.

The History of Hip Hop, in the 1970’s, when rap music was first going big, it was an underground urban movement known as ‘Hip hop, just began to develop to one of the biggest music genre’s in the South Bronx in New York. The 80’s saw a big impact om rap/Hip-hop music throughout the 80’s that made rap as big as it now. The Hip Hop genre focused on emceeing over house parties and neighbourhood block party events, held outside. The trends in 90’s changed when Hip-Hop/Rap music got popular, the fashion trends for rapper back in the 80’s and 90’s wore cloths all baggy, did not fit them and their pants maybe sagging.
In 1970's the latest fashion trends included, disco look, tie dye shirt, and fringe. The Disco look was one of the fashion styles in 1970’s because of the disco music station was introduced on New York radio. The Disco look is most often remembered by it's hot pants and spandex tops. According to Diana Monkowski of The Ultimate History Project, “Discos are nothing if not a fantasy world, where people can change your identity by changing your costume.” (Davis). Tie Dye T-Shirt continue to be one of the most trendy fashions. The tie dye shirt experience started with the hippies in the late 1960s. Tie Dye T- Shirts are bright and colorful clothes, one can even create your own unique style. During the 1970s, people create their tie dyed shirts at home in bright, colorful designs without any patterns or print. Tie Dye T- Shirts were worn with bell bottom pants and could be matching with tie dyed headband. The 1970’s, Fringe style was a quite possibly the greatest piece of layering gleaned from the 70s. Fringe style is a old fashion. In 1980’s the latest fashion was jumpsuits, oversized tops, and Mini Skirts. In the early 1800s, France was the sole fashion capital of the world; everyone who was anyone looked towards Paris for inspiration (DeJean, 35). French fashion authority was not disputed until the late twentieth century when Italy emerged as a major fashion hub (DeJean, 80). During the nineteenth century, mass produced clothing was beginning to be marketed and the appearance of department stores was on the rise (Stearns, 211). High fashion looks were being adapted and sold into “midlevel stores” so that the greater public could have what was once only available to the social elite (DeJean, 38). People were obsessed with expensive fashions; wealthy parents were advised not the let their children run around in expensive clothing. People would wait for children dressed in expensive clothing to walk by and then they would kidnap them and steal their clothes to sell for money (DeJean, 39). The 1960’s was the first time in history that clothing was geared towards the youth market. In result, the industry broke many fashion traditions and ignored many other “social laws”. In the past, fashion houses designed for the mature and elite members of society; however, many agents began to realize that the power of the teenage and young adult market was too great to ignore and they were too smart not to capitalize on such an opportunity. As a response to this information, new and radically innovative fashion styles were introduced into modern society. Prior to the 1960s there were the silk bows, small buckles, and dark colors of the 1900s, "Flapper" fashion took over the 1920s Among these were the little girl/woman androgynous looks for women, the pillbox hat, suits (usually in pastel colors) for women, short boxy jackets, over-sized buttons were used, simple/geometric dresses (or shifts). As for everyday styles, full-skirted formal gowns which often had a low decolletage and had close-fitting waists were worn as evening wear and outfits paired with capri trousers were worn as casual wear for women...
For many centuries clothing was used namely as a form of symbolising one’s ascribed class and social honour. A good example of this was evident in Feudal European times when sumptuary laws were created in order to regulate and specify the clothing that could be worn by certain classes. In 1463 Edward IV went so far as to ‘[declare] that purple silk was to be the prerogative of the aristocracy’ (Finkelstein 1991, pg. 137). As purple dye and silk were both very expensive and sought after this declaration demonstrated quite simply that those who were in possession of such materials should command respect and were of high social standing. Eventually these laws were abolished as, instead of ‘confining people to their designated rank, the laws provoked an intense interest in fashion and a desire to transgress the codes, both in the process of prestigious emulation and as an act of rebellion’ (Craik, 1994, pg. 205). This abolition allowed groups and individuals to establish their own chosen style or ‘marker’ in order to indicate their place within society. By allowing such freedom, ascribed social status gave way to that which was achieved. This not only meant that many more people were able to engage in the ever-expanding culture of ‘Haute couture’ but also that honour was no longer perceived as a birth right but rather as something that could to be obtained. Such a shift in symbolism provided a way for those of not so noble a birth to portray themselves as the latter through a variety of means such as renting or stealing clothes and buying counterfeit copies (a common occurrence in today’s society also).
The creation of mini-skirts did bring a whirlwind in the summer of 1960. Besides, the Peter Max T-shirt was also hot in the 60s. In addition, we discussed the fashion style for the 80s. The dresses are powerful and simple. In particular, the colors were deeper than the 60s and those designers prefer to add jewels on garments.
If these new coming trends of fashion make you feel special and confident; then it also sometime embarrasses you in front of others when you do not apply things on yourself according to your individual personality. For young age people, who are much affected and influenced by new fashion, it gives harmful effects too. Girls have to face some crucial crime due to their unfit dressing style which does not suit the location.
