The article entitled ‘What do people want from information retrieval?: the top 10 research issues for companies that use and sell IR System is written by W. Bruce Croft, in 1995’. The author is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Computer Science and working at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst since joining in 1979.
When people were discussing about Information retrieval systems, they are actually everywhere including web search engines, library catalogs, store catalogs, cookbook indexes and so on. What I understand thru my reading, information retrieval (IR) also called information storage and retrieval (ISR or ISAR) or information organization and retrieval, can be considered as the art and science of retrieving from a collection of items a subset that serves the user’s purpose. As for example, the IR include web pages valuable and useful in preparing for a vacation to some places, magazine or articles for an assignment or good reading for that vacation, educational materials for a learning objective, digital cameras for taking family photos, recipes that use ingredients on hand and the facts needed for deciding on a company merger. This can be considered that to retrieve what is useful while leaving behind what is not. People have to carefully select the information they need for the purpose of it quality.
As what I understand thru my reading to this, IR is a component of an information system. An information system must ensure that everybody it is meant to serve has the information needed to complete tasks, solve problems and make decisions, no matter what and where that information is available. To this end, an information system must actively figure out what users require or need, obtain documents ...

The term “Controlled Vocabulary” is not universally understood by all to mean the same thing. So that it can be used freely without misunderstanding, this paper defines the term as a “considered list of values, designed to improve searchability”. A set of “rules of thumb” are provided for use in the determination of whether a given set of values is a Controlled Vocabulary, and guidance is provided on populating one.

Over the past few decades, the generation and availability of information over the cyberspace is increasing enormously. There exist an alarming need for solutions that will help to filter the relevant data from the collection of disorganised data for the users to select the most suitable data from the available collection of data. A lot of strategies have been developed, that assist in the selection of relevant information for the user. Applications on the internet are making searching convenient for users by incorporating recommender systems within the applications which helps to filter unwanted information, predict the needs and preferences of users (Long, Zhang, & Hu, 2011) and provide suggestions to the users. When compared to the other fields of information systems, recommender systems is a relatively new field, as it initially used to be a part of information retrieval and management sciences.
Information Retrieval (IR) is to represent, retrieve from storage and organise the information. The information should be easily access. User will be more interested with easy access information. Information retrieval process is the skills of searching for documents, for information within documents and for metadata about documents, as well as that of searching relational databases and the World Wide Web. According to (Shing Ping Tucker, 2008), E-commerce is rapidly a growing segment in the internet.

The generation of the technology, the delayed life choices, the impatience, the reliance on our parents, more commonly known as Generation Y or Millennials, is the generation born between 1980 and 2000. Older generations are always finding fault with what we, the Millennials, do or say or didn’t do or didn’t say. The world is changing so fast, we can hardly keep up. It is bad enough we have to push to learn as much as we can and apply the knowledge effectively, let alone being criticized for every move we make by our elders, who don’t really seem to help matters but complicate them.
As the conclusion, the paper made good contribution to the field by describing the history of the information retrieval systems from 1945 to 1996 with abundant information on the various technologies developed, information retrieval systems built, and how they affected the research in information retrieval. I think artificial intelligence will start to play a leading role in information retrieval in the following years and one day we will have true question answering type of information retrieval at the finger tip of every Internet user.
In today’s fast paced technology, search engines have become vastly popular use for people’s daily routines. A search engine is an information retrieval system that allows someone to search the...
"Although fully searchable text could, in theory, be retrieved without much metadata in the future, it is hard to imagine how a complex or multimedia digital object that goes into storage of any kind could ever survive, let alone be discovered and used, if it were not accompanied by good metadata" (Abby Smith). Discuss Smith's assertion in the context of the contemporary information environment
Information Retrieval is simply a field concerned with organizing information. In other terms, IR is emphasizing the range of different materials that need to be searched. Others researcher said that IR is the contrast between the strong structure and typing a database system with the lack of structure in the objects typically searched in IR. The actual process in information retrieval systems is it has to deal with incomplete or under specified information in the form of the queries issued by users. IR uses the techniques of storing and recovering and often disseminating recorded data especially through the use of a computerized system.
