Book review -Artemis Fowl This book is set in many different places but the book starts out in Ho Chi Minh City. The next and most significant place we arrive at is Haven, the “New York” for the Fairies. The most noteworthy place we read of is Fowl Manor, the very place where almost all of the action of this book takes place in. Of the many major characters the main character would have to be Artemis Fowl, a teenage mastermind who figured out how to steal heaps of gold from “The People” a group of mythical creatures (i.e. Fairies, Gnomes, Sprites etc.). Artemis’ father had been a criminal mastermind before being kidnapped by the Russian Mafia. Artemis is a very antisocial child whose only friend is his bodyguard, Butler. The problem is that of Captain Holly Short of the LepRecon, the police force of the People. Captain Short is abducted by young Artemis while she tries to perform a ceremonious ritual so that she can regain her drained magic. This is a good indication of the climax because of the fact that Holly has been captured letting Artemis use her as bait. Threatening the LepRecon with exposure they are forced to give Artemis the gold in exchange for Captain Short. But making the critical mistake of undermining Artemis, the LepRecon decides to try and send in an advanced S.W.A.T. team along with a troll. Butler took care of the S.W.A.T. team while holly softened up and did the troll in. Artemis, using a unique radar that fixated itself to any stealth object, knew that the Lep was coming and stashed the gold where even magic couldn’t get it out. Although butler was wounded by the troll he was able to take down a second S.W.A.T. team and steal their equipment making him nearly invincible. In the end the negotiation was that artemis let holly go for DOUBLE the amount of gold that was the original …show more content…
Not only that but I also think that it is suspenseful because there are pages that are full of non sense in the middle of the “good” parts. Eoin Colfer’s style of writing is a very informative style because he tells every little detail of the story. This is true in this excerpt “...the rubber seal yielded with a hiss, the pod was definitely not built for comfort. The interior looked as if 3,000,000 tourists had seen to that every square inch was covered in rot...”. If I were to rate this book on a scale from one to ten I’d rate it at a 5. I would give it a five because it started getting boring. Reading all of the stuff in between the action really made the book a Boring Suspense Thriller. I liked the action parts where the Lep would pull out there lasers and try and shoot butler, just before their heads got smashed by the troll. There weren’t enough fighting scenes where Artemis was in actual danger because he would always have some electronic thing monitoring the area to make sure that there were no bad guys. In action I would give this book a 3/10 because there weren’t any real big shootouts. In graphics id give it a 7/10 because of the totally intense descriptions. In “game play” id give it a 4/10 cuz the game would be too hard with all of the smart stuff you’d have to do. But overall it was an O.K. book but it wasn’t my
The setting of the book takes place in Gloucester, Massachusetts. And in the grand banks of the atlantic ocean and on the boat of the Andrea Gail. I put a picture of the town of Gloucester and their harbor which represents their home and their last time on land before the crew died. The Andrea Gail was the only boat that got caught in one of the roughest storms in history and was not found until years later. The map of the three grand banks shows the spots where the Sword fishermen would go to catch fish and spend their time out at sea.The Crow’s Nest bar is the second home of the crew and would be forever empty without the presence of the crew on the Andrea Gail even when the bar is full it’s still empty.
Gertrude lodge lives in a mud built cottage.The lord of the flies is set on a fictitious remote island in the 20th century. The story starts of in the jungle. They later move onto the beaches. They then move to other locations on the island such as the fort and the mountain.Differences and similarities between settingsBoth of the settings are isolated.
The book is again set around the house of Dies Eddington Drear, in a current year. The surrounding property and underground tunnels on premises play major roles in defining the plot and motive for the characters bizarre actions.
The novel is set in the 1930's in St. Petersburg, a fictitious place supposedly reminiscent of the town of Hannibal, Missouri the place where Mark Twain grew up. It follows the events in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, also of the same author.
The first, and one of the most important scenes, in the book, is when Artemis meets with Jon Spiro, to show him a blue cube, nicknamed the C Cube, made out of fairy technology, 50 years ahead of anything we have now, that has the power to do almost anything. Spiro misunderstands the deal, and thinks that Artemis is going to sell it to him. In reality, though, Artemis is offering to keep it off the market for a year, to let Spiro buy into his stock. Spiro gets mad, takes the Cube, and leaves, leaving his bodyguard to take care of Artemis and Butler. Butler protects Artemis, and nearly dies.
Within the novel, a few central themes are evident, shown progressing throughout the story. Good and evil is very often portrayed as a theme within a book, and plays a specific role within Artemis fowl. The book seems to display evil in a way that conveys the great mind of Artemis. Colfer uses pinpointed events to allow the reader to consider the point of view from a villain’s perspective. As the role of evil is played by Artemis, the role of the “good” society of people is played by all civilians and fairies.
This novel and the stories within take place on a ranch that is in the high mountains of Salinas, California in the early 1930’s. The house of the Tiflin Family stands in the middle of the ranch with a bunkhouse, a chicken yard, and a large vegetable patch nearby. The house is surrounded by the brush line, where there is round green tub from which the animals can drink water.
I believe the conflict in the story is an internal one. I think it is the conflict between the old woman's will power and Mother Nature. She encounters many obstacles that would influence most people to give up but she has motivation to get her task done. These encounters include a bush catching onto her dress, a scarecrow frightening her and discouragement from a white man. She also had to climb hills, cross streams and crawl under barbed wire fences which is certainly not considered an easy task for an elderly woman.. If I was forced to deal with these obstacles I know that I would most likely have turned around but her will power was too strong to let Mother Nature win.

It is here that the Westley and Buttercup are introduced, and their affection for each other sets the mood of the story. The second is the castle of Florin where Humperdinck is introduced and is the source of the major conflict that arises during the story, as well as the final setting where the conflict is resolved. The third takes place on the Guilder Frontier. The Guilder frontier is the stretch of land separating Florin and Guilder (Florin’s sworn enemy). The frontier is divided into two sub-territories; the Countryside where Westley is put to the test to save Buttercup, and the Fire Swamp where Westley and Buttercup are tested by imminent danger. The final two locations are set in the country of Florin. They are the Pit of Despair, where Westley faces his death and the Thieves’ Forest where all hope seems to be lost.
