Antigone, by Sophocles, is a Greek play about a young girl who had strong connections with her family, strong determination and had the courage to do the right thing, even if it meant death. Julius Caesar, by Shakespeare, is a Roman play about a popular, supposedly ambitious, military general who had his friends betray him for his, so- called ambition. Although Antigone and Julius Caesar were written with similarities, such as having comparable characters, conflicts and relationships, both plays also have differences in each category.
Both Antigone and Julius Caesar are similar in that both Brutus and Antigone do what is the best and most righteous action for themselves and for others. Creon’s son, Haimon, speaks to him about Antigone’s great deed, “She covered her brother’s body. She kept him from dogs and vultures. Death? - She should have all the honor we can give her (68- 69).” Haimon tries desperately to explain to his father that it was a mistake to kill Antigone for such an honorable and righteous deed. Instead, she should be praised, rewarded and honored. This quote directly refers to the topic sentence because it shows what Antigone went through to do what was best for her brother, not for herself. In a related play Julius Caesar, Brutus tell the Romans why he had to murder Caesar, “If then that friend demand why Brutus rose against Caesar, this is my answer: Not that I loved Caesar less, but I loved Rome more (20- 22).” Brutus attempts to persuade the citizens that he only killed Caesar for the good of Rome. This quote shows Brutus aiming to do what is best for Rome by killing Caesar. However, Antigone and Brutus remain different because Antigone had to go through more pain and sadness for the right cause, while Brutus ...

...reated a special trust between the two. In this quote, Brutus shows his love and sorrow for the fallen Caesar. In contrast, Antigone and Brutus differ because Antigone was always committed to her brother and was loyal to him even after death, whereas Brutus killed Caesar and broke the bond between them.
Antigone and Brutus both demonstrated special bonds, physical and verbal fights with each corresponding enemy and determination beyond any other character in the play. The bond between Antigone and her brother were special because she continued to be loyal to him, even after his death. In the end, Brutus had a large amount of internal conflict before and after he killed Caesar because it is very hard to do something you have to do, even if you don’t want to. Both plays demonstrated their similarities through analysis of characters, conflicts and relationships.
Oedipus Rex and Antigone & nbsp; There is no curse in the house of Oedipus. In the play Antigone, both Antigone and Kreon could be considered tragic heros. A tragic hero, defined by A Dictionary of Literary, Dramatic and Cinematic Terms, is someone who suffers due to a tragic flaw, or hamartia. This Greek word is variously translated as "tragic flaw" or "error" or "weakness". Kreon's hamartia, like in many plays, is hybris - Greek for overweening pride, arrogance, or excessive confidence. Kreon's hybris causes him to attempt to violate the laws of order or human rights, another main part of a tragic hero. Also, like all tragic heroes, Kreon suffers because of his hamartia and then realizes his flaw.

Antony and Brutus are both loyal, noble men and their loyalties shape their characters, drives their actions, and decides the very future of Rome. Brutus loves Caesar, but he loves Rome more. After Caesar's murder, however, their true personalities emerge. In the story, Antigone is caught by Creon’s workers. Antigone is confronted by Creon about breaking the law he created. Creon states “He would: for you honor a traitor as much as him” Antigone replies “His own brother, traitor or not, and equal in blood” C “He made war on his country.
Creon and Brutus both shared high position in the governments of their countries, maintaining power and some level of control. Both of the two, when faced with the threat of losing control turned to unjustified courses of action. Creon threatened death to anyone who defied his rule, fearing that mass hysteria would follow. Brutus on the other had, while less extreme, found that when an overly ambitious ruler threatened Rome the only possible answer was murder. They resorted to the actions with true zeal and completely believed in their cause. Sincerity makes each character share the same beliefs in what they were doing. The country's well-being was the only thing on the leaders' mind.
Antigone and Hamlet are two distinctive tragedies, written by two different authors, in two separate centuries, yet both stories have considerable aspects in common. Antigone is about a girl who stands up to her uncle, the new King Kreon, after he refuses to bury one of her dead brothers, Polynieces, because she believes not burying him in wrong, especially on a spiritual level. Antigone is a tragic heroine because her tragic flaw, tenacious loyalty, leads to the down fall of not only herself, but more importantly her beloved fiancé, Haemon, and also his mother. Hamlet is about a prince whose father, King Hamlet, just died and whose mom, Queen Gertrude, just married his uncle, the new King Claudius. Hamlet is not ok with the situation. Hamlet
Antigone and Oedipus, written by Sophocles, are dramatic plays with a tragic ending. The main theme for Antigone is that people sometimes have to learn the hard way from their mistakes. This theme is expressed in the final four lines of the play. They read, There is no happiness where there is no wisdom; No wisdom but in submission to the gods. Big words are always punished, And proud men in old age learn to be wise. These lines are an important part of the play. They symbolize Creon's bad decisions he made, his defiance to the gods, the punishment he went through because of his edict, and the wisdom he gained because of all his mistakes. "There is no happiness where there is no wisdom" demonstrates how Creon not using wisdom in his decision affected him. By declaring that Polyneices could not have a proper burial, he went against the gods and the other citizens of Thebes's beliefs. This was not a wise decision on his part, and because of it he lost his wife, his son, and his happiness. Creon also defied the laws of the gods. This is what is expressed in the line, "No wisdom but in submission to the gods." In Antigone, the edict and decisions that Creon made demonstrated that his law was more important then the gods laws. His defiance of the laws eventually made him believe, by talking to Teirisias, that something bad would happen to him, so he gave in to his decision.
In Julius Caesar, Brutus and Cassius both commit the evil deed of killing Caesar, yet the readers blame only Cassius. Shakespeare secretly places many techniques of repetition and point of view into the dialogue so that Cassius is given a negative attitude and Brutus a positive one. Brutus is viewed as an honorable, virtuous man while Cassius is viewed as being selfish.

...s’ views and opinions very clearly. We are also able to see the flaws that he embeds. However, Caesar remains a mystery throughout the play as he is slain very early. Caesar enjoys being loved by the people and enjoys holding his status but Brutus wonders how the best power of Rome can be accomplished and turns to assassination and manipulation as it is the only method of removing Caesar. In general, Brutus is moral while Caesar is immoral.
Though they were close friends, their motives and descriptive character traits display a distinct contrast between them. Works Cited and Consulted. Bowden, William R. "The Mind of Brutus. " Shakespeare Quarterly. 17 (1966): 57.
