Which would you rather have it be? You or the animal?
Have you ever had a family member need to get open heart surgery? If your answer is yes, you need to thank animals for making open heart surgery possible. We first started doing open heart surgeries on monkeys to see what would happen and if they would survive. Without any animal testing none of that would have ever been possible. Animal testing may seem cruel and a terrible thing to you at first, but once you hear what I have to tell you, you will realize we need it and it is not even that cruel. Animal testing has helped us in medicine in numerous different ways. Not only helping find cures for diseases in humans but also to help find cures for diseases in animals.
Many people think that animals are just being tortured when they are in testing facilities but in reality most of the time they are not. Animals are also not just taken out of the wild be tested on, they are born in captivity specially to be tested on. We need to continue testing on animals to be able to continue saving lives of both animals and humans. Many extremists try to argue that there are other ways and we should not be testing on animals because it is cruel. However, no other ways will come close to physically doing the real surgery or transplant. Animals make good test subjects Jane Goodall said that “chimpanzees share 99% of their DNA with Humans” (Animal Testing). Jane Goodall also said that “mice are 98% genetically similar to humans” (Animal Testing). This makes chimpanzees and mice the closest thing we have to test on besides ourselves. ...t what it used to be like back twenty some years ago. Many researchers today agree that testing on animals is a critical asset to the development of medical research.
Testing on animals helps further our medical knowledge, helps save both human and animal lives, and there really is just no other alternative way to get the results we need. They just want to assure that the medicines and other products we are using are safe for us and do not kill us. Testing on animals allows us to get a better understanding on the medicines we use today. In all cases or even most cases it will not give us the instant results and cures we want but, it definitely will help save human lives in the end. We need to be able to continue testing on animals, you cannot make a test tube cough or make a computer have a heartbeat. Would you rather it is you tested on or an animal?
