The mind-body problem is a philosophical debate that can be approached by simple questions: what is the relationship between mind and body? Accordingly, what is the relationship between mental assets and physical assets? When examining the mind-body problem there are three fundamentals that should be considered: the subject as an observer of both the external and internal world; the conditions of observation that include certain external and internal tactics of observation; and the observed object or entity (Vacariu, 2011: p. 26). The two debatable theories of the mind-body problem are dualism and monism. In the most general sense, dualism supports the idea of a separate mind from the body with the possibility of differing physical and mental
Studies have shown that healthy physical stimulation can lead to a happier and more balanced mental state, even going so far as to battle mild depression and anxiety (Veenhoven, 2008). What makes these interactions casual is that this relationship between physical activity and mental stability is not always the case; one who does not exercise regularly or demonstrates poor maintenance of their body can be just as mentally healthy as someone engaging in the activities that most find tend to be positive for one 's mental health. Therefore, while it is true that exercise and adequate nutrition can serve as a component in vigorous mental health, for the theory of epiphenomenalism to be supported, the mind would not be able to effect the physical body in any way. The interactions between the mental and physical states are casual and are not solely determined by the body affecting the mind without the mind influencing the body at all, as epiphenomenalism suggests. Some of the best evidence for this is those with mental illnesses often cannot simply exercise their sickness away, but instead may need to receive professional counseling or other mind-nurturing
The placebo effect is a cornerstone for the FDA and other pharmaceutical companies to evaluate the effectiveness of new drugs they wish to market; the placebo effect also supports a main argument in the array of dualism theories that are presented. If a prospective patient illustrates a side-effect from a drug within the control group due to the placebo effect, then it is understood that the drug in trial truly does not possess the properties that is being tested for. This conclusion is direct evidence that the mind maintains undeniable influence of one’s physical health and well-being. If deceiving the mind into believing that it is receiving treatment for something can affect the body but in no way more profoundly than the experimental drug, than it is a thorough confirmation of the mind 's capabilities in changing the physical state of the
