Have you ever walked into a store and notice that your favorite items are always at the end of the store or on the right side? Stores and businesses use different ways to target your ability as a shopper to get you to purchase more and frequent their stores more often than what you would normally do. Malcolm Gladwell and Charles Duhigg explain different shopping method in which stores and businesses use to get you to walk into their store and purchase items in which you need and don’t need. In Gladwell’s article of the “The Science of Shopping”, Gladwell explains with great analytical detail the strategies that stores and businesses use to bring in customers frequently and buy more products than what the customer actually needs. As well as Duhigg implements his ideas and the psychology of “ The Power of Habit” that trigger the process of cues and rewards that creates a habit that maybe hard to break. Vons uses Duhigg’s and Glagwell’s marketing techniques well to attract more customers into their store by using the tracking of recent purchase made by the customer to provide coupons for the customers next purchase.
One of the methods that Gladwell discusses about on his article “ The Science of Shopping” is the Butt-Brush Theory. The Butt-Brush theory is a technique used at stores and businesses in order to get the customers attention. The way Vons uses this technique is in fact a very smart move. In conclusion to the examples provided by Duhigg and Gladwell, they’re marketing strategies and techniques of how stores and business attract customers more is impeccable. The strategies are very well implemented into Vons, The Butt-Brush Method, Petting, and Zone 4. Next time you walk into a store, stop and analyze the strategies being used by the store and see if they correlate with what Duhigg and Gladwell are trying to make us see. These strategies are very well related to our habits because it’s all connected together to create “The Science of Shopping.”

Persuasion has always played an intricate role, in many ways, when it comes to promotion of a Fortune 500 companies like C.V.S. corporation. With the largest pharmacy chain of over 7400 stores in United States; no wonder they are at the top five largest pharmacies in the United States based on revenue generated from prescription only. However it's not only prescription is sold in stores; there are assortment of general merchandise including food, sundries, beauty products as well as health products sold there. In one of the stores I visited for this paper, located at 39th and Main street, I noticed that the products were sold in minute quantities so as to reduce the price of the merchandise.
However, RLK’s competitors are downsizing and outsourcing R&D and exploiting on the cost advantages. If RLK decides to invest more money into R&D and should the new product stall on launch, they face the danger of becoming bankrupt.
‘Treat’ shoppers view shopping as a chore for which they deserve a reward. In the supermarket, this ‘treat’ is often the form of a piece of candy or snack that is bought on impulse when the individual waits in line. Even clothing stores such as the warehouse-size discount clothing store Century 21 make use of ‘treat’ incentives. For example, Century 21 displays accessories such as necklaces and handbags next to the register, to encourage impulse buys before check-out. Particularly attractive sales that are bargains too good to resist are also placed near the register. Even if shoppers do not regard clothes shopping as a chore in the same way they regard food shopping, they may discover finding the right size to be frustrating, and being able to buy items without regard to size in a manner that is purely fun and for pleasure can be an incentive.
New businesses will take longer to thrive with the United States falling economy. The faltering job market and the deepening slump in housing threaten to hurt consumer spending. Consumers are becoming more conscious of their spending and therefore using cash to pay for smaller necessary purchases.
