Analysis of My Papa’s Waltz by Theodore Roethke

The poem “My Papa’s Waltz” written by Theodore Roethke the speaker is reflecting on a childhood memory that he and his father shared. This poem has two different interpretations and theories of the relationship between the speaker and his father. Some people such as myself view it as a loving relationship between father and son. Others view it as riddled with undertones hinting at an abusive relationship between father and son. There are instances in the poem that contribute to both of the theorized meanings of the poem. I can clearly see the loving relationship the father and son share.

Others see undertones of abuse throughout the poem. “The whiskey on your breath/Could make a small boy dizzy”(1-2) could be interpreted as a alcoholic father with little regard to the implications his mature drinks may have on his son. The fact that the speaker looks back and could remember the smell of his fathers breath and the in toxicity of could hint as though his father often drunkenness has been cemented in his memory.
