People may think speech pathology is easy but it’s difficult unless knowledge is great. People get really overwhelmed when finding out what skills and classes are taken to become a speech pathologist. After people see the salary the eyes light up. Speech pathology is confirmed to be such a hard career most people do not major in it.
A speech pathologist helps with patients speech impediments, language, communication and swallowing disorders along with cleft and lip palate defects. speech impediments are a type of communication disorders where normal speech is disrupted. this is usually seen when people stutter or have a lisps, sometimes these impediments will leave people mute. Swallowing disorders or (Dysphagia) deal with the lack of muscle movement or the coordinated muscle movement or sequence the helps to swallow or to speak. Cleft and lip palate deal with birth defects that occur when a baby’s lip or mouth do not form properly during pregnancy. Cleft issues cause problems with forming words or trying to pronounce a word, and also with feeding.
In order to become a speech pathologist students must take courses such as linguistics, biology, anatomy, physical science, social behavioral science, phonetic, human development, mathematics, and semantics and communication sciences and disorders is available in an undergraduate program. To become a speech pathologist, people must successfully pass the clinicals and earn a graduate degree and there is a movement to now require a doctrine to run your own business or to have other speech paths to work under you..

Now, for a main question that crosses most people’s mind. How much money do speech-language pathology make hourly and yearly? As of 2012 the median pay was $69,870 and about $34 an hour. The reasoning upon having a median wage is when they take half of the workers of a profession earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10% have earned less than $44,000 and the top 10% made more than $105,000 (Bureau of Labor Statistics). Even when some made the lowest they still are making pretty good money. Since a person now knows about the pay, job requirements, schooling and what speech-language pathologist is, now would be a good time to talk about the age groups that speech problems can happen in.

As of July 1, 2012, there were approximately 53 million Hispanics in the United States, accounting for 17% of the nation’s population. In the field of speech-language pathology, it is important to consider the differences between Spanish and English speech acquisition in order to differentiate between disordered speech and typical speech acquisition processes (Roseberry-McKibbin & Hegde, 2011).

For this job, pathologists are needed to have certain people skills and a strong commitment in their work (Ferguson 158-59). Speech pathologists work with a variety of people, both young and old. There are many positive and life changing effects on the pathologists and their patients. Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a difficult disorder to diagnose and treat. Categorized as a developmental speech sound disorder, children with CAS often exhibit inconsistent problems with individual sounds, syllables, and words with varying intelligibility due to inaccurate movement of the articulators (CITE?!?). CAS is a neurological disorder that affects the planning and programming of speech and is not due to weakness in the muscles required for speech. As a natural communicator with exceptional interpersonal skills, I have always dreamed of a career working as part of a collaborative team, significantly improving individuals’ lives. Having witnessed my sister overcome a language disorder and a severe learning disability, I understand the personal impact of impaired communication and the importance of a competent Speech-Language Pathologist. Diagnosed at age 5 and placed on an IEP until the 12th grade, my sister’s progress would not have been achievable without the dedication of her Special Education teachers and Speech-Language Pathologists. My own experience with my sister receiving speech therapy as a child has shown me the value of this field and its ability to radically impact lives forever. The opportunity to return this favor to future generations of children is my dream.
Seeing the patient use AAC was quite interesting because during class discussions, I had little knowledge of this specific technique and seeing it firsthand made me comprehend its use and its importance. Additionally, the lessons I’ve learned in class helped me understand the things I saw during the observation. Due to the reports of the groups regarding the common disabilities and patients that speech pathologists encounter, I was able to make connections between what I learned in class and what I encountered during the observation. As mentioned earlier, the patients were diagnosed with intellectual disability, autism, and down syndrome, and all these disabilities were discussed during class, thus, while observing I was aware of what facets of language they may have difficulties in and the techniques or approaches that may be used to treat or help
In addition to having my first hand experience in practically living in the doctors office, I went in to and graduated with my bachelors of science in communication disorders to become a speech language pathologist. Communication is very crucial in life, especially in education. Whether it be delivering a message or receiving information, without the ability to communicate learning can be extremely difficult. Students with speech and language disorders may have “trouble producing speech sounds, using spoken language to communicate, or understanding what other people say” (Turkington, p10, 2003) Each of these problems can create major setbacks in the classroom. Articulation, expression and reception are all essential components for communication. If a student has an issue with articulation, they most likely then have difficulty speaking clearly and at a normal rate (Turkington, 2003). When they produce words, they may omit, substitute, or even distort sounds, hindering their ability to talk. Students who lack in ways of expression have problems explaining what they are thinking and feeling because they do not understand certain parts of language. As with all types of learning disabilities, the severity can range. Two extreme cases of expression disorders are dysphasia and aphasia, in which there is partial to no communication at all (Greene, 435, 2002). Individuals can also have a receptive disorder, in which they do not fully comprehend and understand information that is being given to them. They can experience problems making sense of things. “Children may hear or see a word but not be able to understand its meaning” (National Institutes of Health, 1993, p1).
