For contemporary political figures such as Idaho’s Rex Rammell, they have come to believe that the Federal administration has overstepped its boundaries in the Affordable Healthcare Act, an act branded to many as Obamacare, in relation to an individual’s right to choose health care. Rammell has stated, “The Federal government should do only those things which the states cannot do themselves.” The struggle that Rammell discusses, between local and the Federal authorities concerning civil liberties, is not unique, and its origin in American history can be found in the Whiskey Rebellion. This rebellion, while mainly viewed as a tax protest went awry, witnessed two emerging political societies, the Federalists and the Democratic-Republicans of Western Pennsylvania, clash over the struggle of the role of the Federal government in concerns to constitutional rights. For the Federalists, the legislative branch held the collective permission of the nation’s citizen body to impose laws that intruded upon individual rights for the betterment of the country. Western Democratic-Republicans believed that a centralized authority existed to protect their rights to life, liberty, and property; any intrusion upon these rights gave the people the collective sovereignty to change the central bureaucracy. In the state of Idaho where individual rights often become a battle cry, in 2010 Rammell appeared to have emerged ready to take a forceful stand against the Feds as had the Whiskey Rebels before him.
