Application Paper 3 – Test 2
Through communication, relationships are formed. The type of relationship that we form is directly related to the type of communication that occurs. We can communicate with each other in three ways: I-it communication is the most impersonal form of communication, it involves treating someone as a means to an end and example would be the communication you have with a salesperson. I-you communication is less impersonal it is the most common form of communication; an example would be the communication you have with a colleague or a casual friend. I-thou communication is the most personal, only this type of communication can lead to an interpersonal relationship. It is important to note I-thou communication can occur via text-based CMC and therefore an interpersonal relationship can be achieved through CMC.
Several definitions of interpersonal communication exist however I believe that it is best defined as “A selective, systemic, unique, ongoing process of interaction between individuals who effect and build personal knowledge of each other and create shared meaning.” (Wood, 2002). I chose this definition because it included terms that are not included in other definitions. The inclusion of the word selective is important because it addresses the conscious effort that both people must make in order to achieve an interpersonal relationship. The definition also includes the word between which eludes to the fact that an interpersonal relationship belongs to both people involved. ... the ocean from her balcony. This technology allows us to be present in conversations that occur worldwide. I have friends that live in Scotland, Italy, and Jamaica, and though I do not Skype with them on a regular basis I am still able to keep in touch with them via Facebook and text messages.
Today it is evident that interpersonal relationships can be formed and maintained via CMC. Through CMC, one can achieve all the necessary components that can evolve into an interpersonal relationship. CMC allows two people to communicate and construct messages that permit them to build personal knowledge of one another. The lack of non-verbal cues does not affect the quality of the interpersonal relationship in the end because of the use of other communication mechanisms. Because CMC allows two people to share I-thou communication, interpersonal relationships can be formed.

There are several theories based on interpersonal communication that can be seen in various forms of entertainment, as well as real life experiences. You can see the social penetration theory in the bond that Maleficent and Aurora formed through the time they spent together. The communication privacy management theory can be shown in The Walking Dead as the main character asks newcomers three questions in order to determine who he can trust, and who he can’t trust. Glamour Magazine’s article about abusive relationships shows The Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation theory as it describes the reasons why the women left their toxic relationships. And finally, my personal experience with an old friend can represent the cost benefit/social exchange theory by the way our relationship costed me more than it benefited me. This theory has been subject to many articles and studies in the communication and social departments. Indeed, studying this theory can help us understanding human relations in interpersonal communication. Each of us has been one day confronted to uncertainty, whereas in initial encounters, or moving to a new a new place, or beginning a new work.

The purpose of this paper is not to teach you, or to show you how interpersonal communication is essential to everyday life at home or work. But, I am going to do my best to at least show you how essential communication skills are in all areas of life by using me as the example. My plan is to focus on some of the elements of interpersonal communication that we have been touching on this semester. While reading our Interpersonal Communications Book, three goals kept being highlighted that I personally wanted to accomplish by the end of course. I’m sure that by now have noticed that I keep referring to my topics as goals. The reason why I’m doing so is because I’m still on that learning curve…an ongoing process. If can recall back to all of our assignment in this course they all bring one collective point. That point is that, Interpersonal communication is an essential skill in everything that we do in life.
Interpersonal communication is very important in everyday life. It helps us build a relationship with another, also it helps us to satisfy our physical needs, identity needs, social needs and practical goals. Communication lets people exchange their feeling and information through verbal and non-verbal communication through social media or face to face communication. Communication can be effective and ineffective depend on the individual communication skills. The ways we communicate with another can be influenced by family, friends, significant other also within the culture and region where we stay. Interpersonal Communication in an Intercultural Setting Cultural growth in the twenty-first century has heightened the emphasis on interpersonal communication in an intercultural setting. As our world grows, expands and becomes increasingly more interconnected by various technological advances, the need for effective interpersonal communication among differing cultures has become quite clear. Due to the advancement of technology in today's world, a world in which some businesspeople are involved in transactions with other businesspeople in faraway countries, the call for knowledge of intercultural communication within this setting has become a reality. Interpersonal communication is a form of communication that involves a small number of people who can interact exclusively with one another and who therefore have the ability to both adapt their messages specifically for those others and to obtain immediate interpretations from them (Lustig et al, 1993). Communication is used to interact with other individuals. There are a variety of ways of how people can communicate with one another. I would say in this day in age, the two most popular forms of communication would be face to face and virtual interaction. Face to Face interaction is when we are in real life and communicating. Virtual interaction is through a computer-generated source helping people communicate virtually.
Communication is the bridge between all people. The very goal of communication is for the speaker to convey his or her intended message to the receiver. How this happens is the art of communication and changes with the creativity of human beings. Within that, bridge lay depths of meaning, significance, emotion, logic, reason, understanding and empathy just to name of few. If the speaker has what they believe to be important information that they want to tell the receiver, they find a method of conveying that information. Usually this happens through writing or speaking for the speaker and reading or listening for the speaker. In modern times, this bridge between everything happening in the world and domestically has been the mainstream media. In modern times, the media has become the pinnacle of communication. Living in the information age, communication has evolved and developed to a stage where it demands the average citizen to think critically about issues surrounding their lives, their families, their communities, their country, surrounding countries and the world at large. Journalism is the intended goal of the media. Its purpose is to give society a lens as to how they see the world around them. It is a tool that can be the vehicle for political change, social change, bringing attention to and striving for action in ameliorating society's downfalls such as institutionalized racism or the industrialization of the U.S. prison system. This all happens when the citizens themselves know how to critically think, if they don't then the media is a dangerous tool of the powerful that can be abused.
You can just write a message and send it as an email or in a chat. Not just communicating through emails and chats but you can now see each other with the use of video chatting. If you want to talk to someone who is in another part of the world, you can just open your Skype or any other communication app and start a video chat. Services such as Skype have helped everyone from anywhere in the world to interact and share ideas. (L. (2015).
