Background Information
Becoming a volunteer
I began to prepare for the Service Learning class in April by contacting my preceptor, Bill Werner, SLV Disaster Coordinator, regarding the possibility of becoming an ARC nurse volunteer. Bill and I met in June and rekindled the volunteer nurse discussion and I verbally agreed to become a volunteer. In July, I attended an American Red Cros...

For our project, Maddie, Payal, Shraddha, and I decided to volunteer with a group called Angel Arms located in Latrobe. Angel Arms is an organization that takes care and helps rehabilitate babies who were born addicted to drugs. At first, we assumed we would be working with their snuggler program which would have allowed us to hold and comfort these babies. However, with the opioid epidemic on the rise, a place was needed for their work to continue. Although a long way out, Angel Arms is restoring an old abandoned Victorian house to turn it a rehabilitation place for these babies. They just started the project a month back so our service project was doing a lot of moving of old furniture out of the house. We helped them organize what could

A community can be defined as a group of people, who live, learn, work and play in an environment at a given time. (Yiu, 2012, p.213) There are many factors that may influence the community’s development and health status. These can include resources available, accessibility, transportation, safety, community needs etc… These influences may combine together to form community strengths and as well as community challenges or weaknesses. As a community health care nurse, it is significant for us to assess and identify these strengths and challenges within the community in order for us to intervene and provide the appropriate needed health care services for the community members. This individual scholarly paper will explore and focus on one challenge issue identified from our group community assessment.
“Registered nurses treat patients and help prevent disease, educate patients and the public about various medical conditions and health issues, and provide advice and emotional support to patients’ family members both physically and mentally.”(Registered). It is important for the individual going into this occupation to search out the pros and cons of the different areas of nursing. Sometimes gender plays a part in choosing the specific area of an RN. For instance, the strength of males is needed in areas of physical therapy. While the gentle attributes of women are needed in the care of babies. “A nurse must like people and want to help them, and must also have self-reliance and good judgment, patience, honesty, responsibility, and ability to work easily with others.”(Jacobi). The occupation of a registered nurse includes many advantages such as having the ability to assist your family in medical needs, the salary is attractive and above the average scale, and it offers great job security.

During one of my undergraduate courses, “Community and Population Health”, I completed a paper on my community and access to healthcare. During the research and community outreach performed to meet the goals of the paper, my eyes were opened to the plight of small communities in regards to access to quality healthcare. This plight has become my passion, and has formed the basis for my vision of the Family Nurse Practitioner role.
Public health nursing is a practice that focuses on promoting and enhancing health of populations through the nursing knowledge, critical thinking, and disease or disability prevention. An effective public health nurse can also evaluate and gather data through an assessment that functions to formulate a diagnosis for the population and setting priorities. An assessment is derived from direct input from the population, data regarding access and use of health services, preventive and health promotion factors, risk factors, and basic nursing and public health skills. Public health nurses engage in research that enhances public health nursing practice and document the outcomes of specific activities and strategies. They have a responsibility to activel...

Since the primary goal of public health nursing is promoting health and preventing disease within the community, it’s essential that nurses be able to gather and assess demographic information to diagnose the local needs of the population and consider that information when developing a health improvement plan (Nies & McEwan, 2015). The assignment this week is to gather statistics from county, state and national databases and analyze the findings to identify actual or potential areas of concern.

I was four or five years old when I first noticed people with ‘plus red’ sign logo helping the victims of nearby town that have been devastated by vicious fire. Everyone present there were oblivious of who these ‘angel’ like people are and who sent them here. This has never happened in extreme places like that before. Like many superheroes in science fiction movies, they came from nowhere and started getting their hands dirty. With them, they brought food, water and medical aids, etc. At that young age, all that I cared about was the bottle of juice with strawberry flavor that they distributed needless of who the victims were. Post this incident, I began to see them in every situation like this. Years later, I came to know who these people as the volunteers of an organization called Red Cross. Since then, I have been very passionate about working for this organization one day and knowing about how it works in relieving the people in need. Over the years, the Red Cross has been protecting human life and health and promoting awareness among individuals through programs like Disaster relief, blood transfusion, health education, etc. around the globe.
