This is a petroleum dependent society. Everything from the vehicles that are driven to the electricity that is used, require petroleum to operate. However, this is becoming a major problem due to the decreasing amount of fossil fuel available to the world. The solution to this problem is alternative sources of fuel. Alternative sources of fuel can be obtained from a variety of energy sources, including those derived from biomass, various liquid fuels, and even energy from the sun (The New Book).
Researchers from the Department of Energy, or DOE for short, are searching for alternative sources of fuel. Many of the solutions involve the use of Biomass (The New Book). Biomass is created when plants, garbage, or any other natural waste is chemically changed through a process called fermentation (The New Book). During the fermentation process, bacteria are used to convert the natural waste into various gases and liquid fuels (The New Book). There are many popular liquid fuels that are obtained this process. Two of these fuels are ethanol and methanol (The New Book). Ethanol is the most well-known and widely used liquid fuel produced during fermentation (The New Book).
Ethanol is a renewable fuel that is produced from plants such as corn, sugar cane, and many types of grasses (Alternative Fuels). The Energy Information Administration has stated, “Ethanol fuel use in the U.S. has increased dramatically from about 1.7 billion gallons in 2001 to about 12.9 billion in 2012.” Ethanol comes in three blends, or mixes of gasoline and ethanol. With alternative fuels that are derived from biomass such as ethanol and methanol and other sources like electricity and solar power, the United States should have a good start to achieving the goal of energy independence. The future of fuel is clean, energy efficient alternative fuels.

Ethanol is a clean, renewable fuel made from plant material. Ethanol is cleaner than gasoline because it contains more oxygen. The added oxygen increases ethanol's octane rating. The octane rating is the fuel's ability to resist “knock”. Ethanol has a higher octane rating than gasoline. Ethanol above fifteen percent can damage vehicles that are designed to run on gasoline. An ethanol/gasoline (E10) blend is cheaper than just gasoline. The blend does reduce fuel economy by up to 3.3 percent. Car companies have started to produce flex-fuel vehicles. Today, the world’s ethanol is primarily produced in Brazil using sugarcane. The second largest producer of ethanol is the United States, where it is created from corn. Ethanol has the largest production mass of all the biofuels (Powlson, Riche, and Shield, 2005). In 2003 Brazil produced 9.9 million tons, as compared to 8.4 million tons produced by the United States, and 1.75 million tons produced in Europe (Malca and Freire, 2006).
Alternative energy is the world’s race as of now. As the space race concluded and the nuclear arms race died down, alternative energy became the race of the ages. In today’s society, with today’s technology there are all sorts of forms of alternative energies. These energies include hydro power, geothermal, biomass, nuclear power, and so much more. With all of these variations of alternative energy the question now becomes, which form is the best to use? Are any of them safe? Which ones would effectively solve the world’s depleting energy crisis? Of course, the country that is able to produce clean efficient energy; that country would become the new world power virtually overnight. With today’s technology, should we resort to food/corn as our primary source of energy?
Ethanol production was developed in hopes of severing our ties with fossil fuels in favor of alternative energy, such as biofuels. Although, VOCs emissions are released during production of ethanol in a factory, the quality of air is greatly improved when burning ethanol versus fossil fuels. Burning ethanol instead of fossil fuels reduces the amount of cancer-causing greenhouse gases that go into the atmosphere. Ethanol production ranks at the bottom of industrial water usage, but is still not out of the woods with the abundance of water usage needed in corn feedstock and ethanol manufacturing and processing facilities. Many acres of land are needed to grow corn crops, however, many corn farmers are successful in growing more corn on less acreage.
As stated earlier, the burning of fossil fuels to produce energy is one of the largest contributors to global warming. This non-environmentally friendly energy source has to be replaced in order to keep the world going. Semantically fossil fuels are a renewable source of energy, however given that it takes millions of years for the organic materials to be broken down and converted, it is wholly unrealistic to consider them as renewable. As the demand for fossil fuels increases and source diminish faster than they are replentished, the United States must work towards a renewable energy independent state using truly renable sources, both technically and in practice. With changes in the home, as consumers in buying goods and with alternative fuel sources backed by public trust and governmental involvement, the United States could drastically lessen its dependence on fossil fuels, foreign and domestic.
The current use of energy in the United States, especially California, is foreshadowing catastrophe in our environment. Due to high demand of fossil fuels, the air is filled with more pollution every day. In addition to, it can increase the chances of having global warming. The main problem with fossil energy is that the supply of fossil fuels is not continuous. However, alternative energy is continual and harmless to the environment. Biomass does not pollute the atmosphere as much as natural gas. One of the most convenient alternative energies that are currently used for minor purposes is biomass. From the significant results of recent and past use of biomass, it can be considered trustworthy as the main source of energy in the future.
For cellulosic ethanol to be put in large-scale production, the benefits need to outweigh the concerns. Some of the benefits are that it releases 86% less greenhouse gasses than gasoline, and 52% less than corn ethanol. Also, it lowers the emissions of two cancer causing substances, benzene and 1,3-butadiene. Maybe the most important is that cellulosic biomass is more available than any other source of ethanol. Some of the concerns of cellulosic ethanol involve expenses, low fuel mileage, and not being able to produce enough. Cellulosic ethanol costs more to make than gasoline. Energy is a valuable source to people around the world and overtime we have become much dependent upon fossil fuels. Fossil fuels include coal, oil, and natural gas. Although these resources are abundant, they will not always be readily available to us. That is why we need to begin searching for other renewable resources that can create more energy.
