Alienation within “Beloved”
“Cultural trauma refers to a dramatic loss of identity and meaning, a tear in the social fabric, affecting a group of people that has achieved some degree of cohesion” (Day 2). This quote by Ron Eyerman in “Cultural Trauma” references a large theme within the novel “Beloved”; Alienation of the self with its own identity. As the cultural trauma of slavery took its toll on the populations of each and every state where it persisted, it culminated in the same outcome in every instance. Put quite simply, the institution of slavery forms concrete and seemingly immovable walls between slave and master. Within this practice, members of these societies became locked into their respective roles. Erikson defines identity as “the conception of who one is and what one is over time and across situations”, (Day 3). Yet slaves in this day did not live through any variety of “situations”. Second only to the harsh conditions and emotional trauma of slavery was its consistency. Each day from dawn to dusk consisted of the same schedule of work with variety rarely occurring. With this in mind, it is hardly a stretch to say that the slave was deprived of identity through their inability to see themselves in a variety of real life situations. The slave only knew the life of a slave. It is only when Paul D and Sethe escape this life that they are forced to stop alienating themselves from the world around them and come to terms with their own identity. ...other. Morrison shows us through her novel that there is more to life than master and slave. She documents the struggle of Sethe, Paul D, Baby Suggs and Stamp Paid to escape this mentality, but as they do, the community is united and the horrors of the past (Beloved) are driven away. Despite years of social training, it is only when the alienation is broken that love and life can occur.

These statements posed by French novelist Francois Mauriac can be applied to Toni Morrison’s Beloved. The novel centers around Sethe, a former African American slave, who lives in rural Cincinnati, Ohio with her daughter named Denver. In Toni Morrison’s Sula, the theme of race appears in at least every paragraph of the book. This book encompasses the years 1919 to 1965, which includes some very prominent racial demonstrations in history. Morrison portrays race in three contrasting aspects, which are, the division of the black community of Bottom and the white community of Medallion, the viewpoint black people had of white people and the viewpoint white people had of black people.
...t with the only energy and determination they had to reach freedom, the text of Beloved explains that “claiming ownership of [your] freed self was” not an obstacle for the feeble (Morrison 111-112). The way in which slaves were treated while confined within the land of their owners scarred them until death. Gender neutrality led to security issues and allowed for cooperation through physical sexual and emotional abuse. Animal inclinations were shown in all slaves such as Sethe when slaying her children. Identity crisis is also derived from the acts of owners in slavery and is a great obstruction to acceptance of freedom. Throughout all their hardships, slaves had the willpower to never stop attempting to love themselves and one another. Slaves only wanted freedom and acceptance once outside of bondage, however, they could not have either without having both.

Tony Morrison’s novel Beloved, explores how slavery effects of the lives of former slaves. Morrison focuses more specifically on how the women in these situations are affected. One of the main areas affected in the lives of these women is motherhood. By describing the experiences of the mothers in her story (primarily Baby Suggs and Sethe) Morrison shows how slavery warped and shaped motherhood, and the relationships between mothers and children of the enslaved. In Beloved the slavery culture separates mothers and children both physically and emotionally.
Morrison’s authorship elucidates the conditions of motherhood showing how black women’s existence is warped by severing conditions of slavery. In this novel, it becomes apparent how in a patriarchal society a woman can feel guilty when choosing interests, career and self-development before motherhood. The sacrifice that has to be made by a mother is evident and natural, but equality in a relationship means shared responsibility and with that, the sacrifices are less on both part. Although motherhood can be a wonderful experience many women fear it in view of the tamming of the other and the obligation that eventually lies on the mother. Training alludes to how the female is situated in the home and how the nurturing of the child and additional local errands has now turned into her circle and obligation. This is exactly the situation for Sethe in Morrison’s Beloved. Sethe questions the very conventions of maternal narrative. A runaway slave of the later half of 19th century, she possesses a world in which “good mothering” is extremely valued, but only for a certain class of women: white, wealthy, outsourcing. Sethe’s role is to be aloof: deliver flesh, produce milk, but no matter what happens, she cannot love. During the short space of time (which is 28 days) Sethe embraces the dominant values of idealised maternity. Sethe’s fantasy is intended to end upon recover, however, it doesn’t, on that ground she declines to give her family a chance to be taken from her. Perhaps one of the most important issues in Toni Morrison's award-winning novel Beloved is Morrison's intentional diversity of possible interpretations. However the text is looked at and analyzed, it is the variety of these multiple meanings that confounds any simple interpretation and gives the novel the complexity. The debate rages on over many topics, but one issue of central and basic importance to the understanding of the novel is defining the different possibilities for interpreting the title character. As Robert Broad recognizes, "the question, "Who the hell is Beloved?" must haunt the reader of the novel," and the reader must come to some basic understanding of her character to appreciate the difficult stream of consciousness sections (Broad 189). But there may be no "basic" understanding available of Beloved, for she is a character that ostensibly refuses any single identity, either literal or symbolic.
Identity in James Baldwin’s “Stranger in the Village” and Zora Neale Hurston’s “How it Feels to be Colored Me”
Trauma: an emotional shock causing lasting and substantial damage to a person’s psychological development. Linda Krumholz in the African American Review claims the book Beloved by Toni Morrison aids the nation in the recovery from our traumatic history that is blemished with unfortunate occurrences like slavery and intolerance. While this grand effect may be true, one thing that is absolute is the lesson this book preaches. Morrison’s basic message she wanted the reader to recognize is that life happens, people get hurt, but to let the negative experiences overshadow the possibility of future good ones is not a good way to live. Morrison warns the reader that sooner or later you will have to choose between letting go of the past or it will forcibly overwhelm you. In order to cement to the reader the importance of accepting one’s personal history, Morrison uses the tale of former slave Sethe to show the danger of not only holding on to the past, but to also deny the existence and weight of the psychological trauma it poses to a person’s psyche. She does this by using characters and their actions to symbolize the past and acceptance of its existence and content.
Toni Morrison’s novel, Beloved, explores the physical, emotional, and spiritual suffering that was brought on by slavery. Several critical works recognize that Morrison incorporates aspects of traditional African religions and to Christianity to depict the anguish slavery placed not only on her characters, but other enslaved African Americans. This review of literature will explore three different scholarly articles that exemplifies how Morrison successfully uses African religions and Christianity to depict the story of how slavery affected the characters’ lives in the novel, even after their emancipation from slavery.
As much as society does not want to admit, violence serves as a form of entertainment. In media today, violence typically has no meaning. Literature, movies, and music, saturated with violence, enter the homes of millions everyday. On the other hand, in Beloved, a novel by Toni Morrison, violence contributes greatly to the overall work. The story takes place during the age of the enslavement of African-Americans for rural labor in plantations. Sethe, the proud and noble protagonist, has suffered a great deal at the hand of schoolteacher. The unfortunate and seemingly inevitable events that occur in her life, fraught with violence and heartache, tug at the reader’s heart-strings. The wrongdoings Sethe endures are significant to the meaning of the novel.
In Toni Morrison’s novel, Beloved, Morrison uses universal themes and characters that anyone can relate to today. Set in the 1800s, Beloved is about the destructive effects of American slavery. Most destructive in the novel, however, is the impact of slavery on the human soul. Morrison’s Beloved highlights how slavery contributes to the destruction of one’s identity by examining the importance of community solidarity, as well as the powers and limits of language during the 1860s.

In the very last segment of the novel, the narrator notes that finally "they forgot [Beloved]. Like an unpleasant dream during a troubling sleep" (290). Sethe no longer represses history but actually lets it go. As a result, Beloved becomes nothing more than "an unpleasant dream," suggesting that she does not exist as a real person, but rather has no substance as a mere fantasy or hallucination which has no value to the community or to Sethe, Denver, or Paul D. Sethe moves on with her life as she has already faced the past, tried to make amends for her mistakes, and finally realizes her own value in life.
Both Beloved by Toni Morrison and Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe are popular works of literature in African and African American culture. Both books are diverse and provide an inside look into the African and African American cultures. Beloved involves a group of characters that have dealt with slavery, losing family members, and being free and trying to learn how to live in society. Slavery induced negative effects on everyone who went through it and destroyed families. The main character Sethe deals with the past decisions see made, one major decision involves killing her baby and seeing her ghost years later. Past and present memories are explained in the book showing what the main characters went through. Things Fall Apart involves the people of Umuofia experiencing changes and challenges when Christian missionaries come into their land. The main character Okonkwo represents a fearless, tough leader with integrity for his tribe. He experiences death and mistakes and is banished from his tribe, but upon his return he finds his tribe has been invaded. His tribe experiences colonization by the missionaries and ends up falling in the end. Both novels involve black individuals having to overcome obstacles and finding ways to live in their own societies. Both novels deal with the issue of Parent-child relationships. In Beloved, Sethe with her children, Beloved and Denver. In Things Fall Apart Okonkwo deals with is son Nwoye. They also deal with inter-racial relations. Lastly, they both deal with gender relations. Both Beloved and Things Fall Apart demonstrate the circumstances individuals went through regarding, parent-child relations, inter-racial relations, and gender relations in there own manner.
