Suicide is one of the leading causes of death for schizophrenic patients the reason patients might have thoughts of suicide is because depression plays a big part in that. Schizophrenia can cause depression which can cause suicide thoughts and or intentions. 'One half of people with schizophrenia experience a period of depression during lifetime' (Brichford). 'Nearly one third of patients truly diagnosed with schizophrenia will attempt suicide'(Bengston). Statics were showing that one third of patients will attempt suicide and that doctors will have to keep a close eye on patients who try to kill themselves. Another reason schizophrenia patients would want to try to commit suicide is because they do not feel wanted in the world because they can’t control what is going on in their mind and might go insane. A hallucination is defined as a sensory perception in the absence of an externally generated stimulus (4). They are different from illusions in that in an illusion an external object actually exists and is perceived, but is misinterpreted by the individual (4). Main forms of hallucinations are be visual, auditory, and olfactory, but since we have been discussing vision and interpretation of reality lately this paper will focus only on those that are visual. And I will attempt through the examination of two different types of visual hallucinations - release hallucinations and those experienced by schizophrenics - to make an argument for brain equals behavior.

According to the DSM-IV, schizophrenia is classified under the section of “Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders”. Schizophrenia is one of the most serious major chronic brain disorders in the field of mental health; it is a neurological disorder that affects the cognitive functions of the human brain. People living with this incapacitating illness can experience multiple symptoms that will cause extreme strain in their own and their families and friends life. The individual can lose reality, unable to work, have delusions and hallucinations, may have disorganized speech and thought processes, will withdraw from people and activities, they may become suspicious and paranoid, may behave inappropriately in every day social situations. They may neglect personal hygiene and dress improperly, use excessive make-up; every day life is becoming chaotic for everyone involved.
As an overview, schizophrenia is a disease to the brain. It is one of the most disabling and emotionally devastating illnesses known to man. It has been misunderstood for a long time. It has a biological basis, so it is like other diseases. It is a very common disease; one percent to one and a half percent of the U.S. has been diagnosed within some point in their life. There is no cure for this disease, although there is treatable medicine. Schizophrenia is not a multiple personality disorder. People who take medicine for it are able to lead normal fulfilling lives.
Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness. Patients experience progressive personality changes and a breakdown in their relationships with the outside world. They have disorganized and abnormal thinking, behavior and language and become emotionally unresponsive or withdrawn.
I will first talk about the positive symptoms of schizophrenia. One of the most occurring positive symptoms is hallucinations. Hallucinations are false perceptions, inaccuracies that affect a person's senses and cause us to hear, see, taste, touch, or smell what others do not. Some people with schizophrenia will hear voices that can be reassuring and yet they can be very menacing. Allot of times these voices lead people to hurt themselves or just do abnormal things. Hallucinations, usually the same ones over and over, take control of a person and leave them feeling victimized.
Schizophrenia is a type of psychological disorder that affects a person’s brain and affects how they think and act on a daily bases. The disorder is known to be one of the most disabling and puzzling psychological disorder. People that suffer from this disorder have stated experiences that it is almost like a break from reality. It seems that schizophrenia in the past years has become a larger issue in our society. Moreover, people who develop the disorder seem to be disengaged from the common things in our lives such as working a job and having a relationship with others. There are many reasons why schizophrenia is one of the most bizarre and disabling types of mental disorders.
Hallucinations are perceptions that appear and feel real to the person, but in fact don’t exist at all. Most hallucinations in schizophrenia are auditory, though visual hallucinations occur frequently as well. An example of a hallucination would be seeing a demon or hearing God speak to them.
When signs and symptoms of Schizophrenia are ignored or not treated properly, the effects can be traumatic to both the person suffering and the people around them. Some possible effects are one, relationship problems. Relationships often suffer because schizophrenic are withdrawn and isolated, and with paranoid schizophrenia they are suspicious of family and friends. Second there is disruption to normal daily activities. Schizophrenics have trouble with daily functioning because of social difficulties and because everyday task become hard. Their delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thoughts stop them from doing regular things. Thirdly there is drug and alcohol abuse. Many times suffers of Schizophrenia develop issues with drugs and alcohols in attempt to self-meditate, or relieve symptoms. Lastly there are increased suicide ris...
Schizophrenia is defined as a severe disabling mental illness. A person with this illness may be completely out of touch with what is going on around them. For example, the individual suffering from Schizophrenia may hear voices, see people who are not there (ghost in other words), and or feel bugs crawling on their skin when in actuality there are now. They may also have disorganized speech and behavior, physically rigid, emotionless, and delusions. The type of delusions where they believe that people are reading their minds, have control over their thoughts, and or plotting to hurt them. They have difficulty holding jobs and taking care of themselves.
Most people confuse split personality with schizophrenia, and both are completely different. Schizophrenic people often lose touch with reality and...
“Schizophrenia is a mental disorder characterized by disturbances in thought, emotion, and behavior−disordered thinking, in which ideas are not logically related; faulty perception and attention; lack of emotional expressiveness or, at times, inappropriate expressions; and disturbances in movement and behavior, such as a dishelved appearance.”() As you can see there is a wide range of symptoms used to diagnose schizophrenia but most of the time someone with schizophrenia only has a few of the symptoms. This makes schizophrenia a difficult disorder to stereotype because there is not one main symptom that must be present to diagnose. The DSM-5 criteria for a diagnoses of schizophrenia is defined as having two or more symptoms for at least one month. The symptoms are delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, disorganized or catatonic behavior, and negative symptoms such as reduced motivation or emotional expression. Delusions, ha...
(Sacks, 2012) The person experiencing them is convinced that what they are seeing or smelling is real, and become very confused as to what is reality and what is not. These most commonly occur in people who suffer from a mental illness such as schizophrenia or various types of psychotic disorders. In this article the author discusses how hallucinations are becoming more common amongst people today, and the different scenarios where they are more present. Hallucinations can occur when experiencing migraines, seizures, or even consuming too much of a particular medication. (Sacks, 2012)
Schizophrenia can be described by a wide-ranging spectrum of emotional and cognitive dysfunctions. These can include hallucinations, delusions, disorganized speech and behavior, as well as inappropriate emotions. Consequently, this disease can affect people from all walks of life. Since schizophrenia is such a complex disorder it can ultimately affect a person’s entire existence and their struggle to function daily. With a chronic disease like this, most people have a difficult time functioning in society. This can make it hard for someone who is schizophrenic to relate to others as well as maintain significant relationships. Life expectancy for those who suffer this illness tend to be shorter than average. This is due to the higher rate of accident and suicide. The symptoms of schizophrenia can be broken down into different categories: positive, negative and disorganized. Positive symptoms include hallucinations and delusions. These tend to be the more obvious signs of psychosis. On the other hand negative symptoms indicate deficits or absence of normal behavior which can affect sp...
This chapter got into more depth about people with schizophrenia. This was one topic I never really knew too much information about it. For a person to be classified as having a psychological disorder, the person’s behavior must not only be unusual, but also disturbing. The people with schizophrenia often suffer symptoms such as hearing voices, people are reading their minds, controlling their thoughts, plotting against them. Reading this chapter has showed me that schizophrenia is a serious disorder and a very dangerous psychological disorder to themselves and the people around them. The cause of schizophrenia is still unclear. Some theories about the cause of this disease are genetics, biology; and possible infections and immune disorders. Symptoms may develop slowly over months or years, or may appear very
