Domestic Violence

To define domestic violence quite accurately for those who do not know, a source states as follows, “Domestic violence and abuse are used for one purpose and one purpose only: to gain and maintain total control over you” (“Domestic Violence and Abuse”). Domestic violence has been a highly reported issue for a long while now. The discussions on domestic violence range from being shown on low-key newspaper articles to top-notch headlines on television stations. Many believe why this certain topic is widely displayed is for the reason that it hits home in a way no matter the size of the impact. Each case should not be taken lightly as many countless cases of domestic violence go unreported, thus leaving a giant hole in proper statistics. Most records or statistics dealing with the subject of domestic violence are usually skewed as the topic itself is taboo and lowly spoken of in daily conversations, making it difficult to create such statistics based off the little of the few reports that are filed (“Domestic Violence”).
A rather disturbing statistic found from Berry’s sourcebook is, “Each year, at least fifteen hundred women are killed by a current or former husband or boyfriend. Over 30 percent (some estimate over 50 percent) […] are committed by intimate partners” (7). That statistic means, based off research and possibly influential news reports, three to five out of every ten women killed within a committed relationship was killed from domestic violence or plain murder from their partner. Of course, this statistic may seem exaggerated but then again, as stated before, many reports of domestic violence are skewed and known little of.
