The Age of Exploration was the time for many great discoveries to rise. There was a great amount of growth for the Europeans as well. At this time period, there was a great deal of decline for the Native American people. Some of these European explorers tried to help others as well as themselves along the journey. Other Europeans helped themselves while making others suffer for their lives. A person who can be described as this is Hernando Cortes. Cortes was born around 1485 at Medellin, Spain. He is mainly known for defeating the Aztec empire and claiming Mexico for Spain. Although he claimed a piece of land for Spain, I believe that Cortes does not deserve to be called a great leader. He destroyed the Aztec civilization and wiped out mostly all the Aztec people. Not only that, Cortes used many people and as well as the Aztecs to gain more power. Killing the people and ending a powerful civilization during the age of exploration does not make Hernando Cortes a “great” leader.

A great hero from Europe or a man with only himself and his people in mind? Many people believe that he was a hero whose discoveries lead to the possibilities we have in America today, while many other condemn him for the deaths of many Native Americans that occurred to make it possible to live in America today. What would someone like me see in Columbus’ discoveries and enslavements? He introduced the Europeans to new products and ways of financial expansion. Even though Columbus gave us a head start to a better life here in America, what lengths did he go to make such a life possible? He brought over diseases to the natives and also grazing animals to eat up the vegetation. These deaths would have never occurred if not for the countries that funded the exploration. Columbus and the Europeans would never have come to the Americas when they did and so many natives would not have died.
His main accomplishment was the Spanish Conquest of Mexico. With about 600 men and 16 horses, Hernan Cortes landed on the Mexican coast in search of gold. From local inhabitants, he heard of a great and he had heard of a great and wealthy civilization farther inland. This civilization is what we call now the Aztec empire. He and his troops marched onward towards Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital.
The Age of Exploration brought many unforeseen changes to the people of Africa. On a path seeking gold, glory, and God, many explorers reached new parts of Africa. Explorers were seeking a more direct route to Asia and believed they must travel through Africa to reach these Asian lands. Velazquez, who Cortes sailed with in 1511, became the governor of Cuba. Soon after Velazquez then learned of a rich Indian empire in Mexico and he chose Cortes to lead his fleet. He destroyed the Aztec civilization. As a ruthless military commander he killed many lives in the process of conquering/destroying the Aztec civilization. He brought slavery to New Spain and made the natives slaves. He was also a ruthless leader, anyone who opposed him would be killed or have a severe punishment. He manipulated the Tlaxcalans to help him destroy/conquer the Aztecs. He would mistreat the natives and be cruel to them for no reason. Also he forced the Aztec to be Christians and if they didn't convert they would be killed. He killed many people in the process of destroying/conquering the Aztecs. The Age of Exploration changed the world forever it and it was caused for three main reasons the three G’s, land for colonies, and marauders. These three reasons changed and it all happened in one event called the Colombian Exchange this caused climates to change and people to die. Pretty much the European’s came to the new world and colonized, so that they could dig gold and preach the word of god for their own pride. Thus the age of exploration and colonization were motivated by the ambitions of many Europeans and ended up leading to a massive devastating impact in the new world.

They saw vast profits from these ventures through taxes and the customary “ Royal Fifth” which was a fifth of all profits would go straight to the King and/or Queen. What determines whether an action undertaken by any agent is right or wrong? Lon L. Fuller's 1949 article, The Case of the Speluncean Explorers, provides a situation whereby the ethical definitions of right action are evaluated. The ethical study of right action consists of two major moral theories being de-ontological (backward looking/origin) and teleological (forward looking/ends). Both also have religious and non-religious strands. The de-ontological theory consists of the divine-command theory (religious) and Kantianism (non-religious), while the teleological theory is composed of natural-law theory (religious) and utilitarianism (non-religious). In this paper, all four strands of moral theory will be used to evaluate the Fuller article and decipher which moral theory best serves the argument whether the actions of the four defendants were ethically permissible given the situation. At the end of this paper, sufficient proof will be given to prove that the application of Kantian ethical theory regarding right action—the categorical imperative—with Christine Korsgaard's double-level theories is pertinent in bringing about a moral conclusion to the case involved.
