During the time between 1870 and 1900, Africa was actively colonized by the Europeans. Concurrently, Africans fought back with various resistance tactics to prevent Europeans from colonizing. In the end, however, their efforts were futile; By 1901, many areas excluding Liberia and Ethiopia had been colonized by Europe.
Causes and Scramble for Africa
In Europe, many countries were struggling for power, and one of the ways a country could display its power was by having a lot of land, including colonies. Additionally, European countries wanted more money, especially since it was during the industrial revolution (raw materials, investments, etc). Thus, many European countries began the scramble for Africa.
Soon, however, the scramble got so fierce that many people began worrying that conflicts and even wars may occur. In response, Otto Von Bismarck, Chancellor of Germany, assembled the famed Berlin Conference. No Africans were invited while the Europeans discussed how to split up Africa.
