Hybrid Cars: Saving the Environment Through Advertising
Each year the average temperature of the earth increases .02 degrees Fahrenheit (Global Warming). Although this may not seem like a big change, our ecosystems are so fragile that even this slight boost in temperature is very destructive; oceans rise, glaciers melt at an alarming rate, species of animals cannot adapt and die off. As the twenty first century continues on, these changes are accelerating at an alarming rate, mainly due to population increase. Humans are producing more waste, owning more cars and building more pollution emitting factories every year. Unfortunately all of these factors help contribute to global warming. Some awareness concerning this problem has been raised but the general public seldom takes heed of these warnings. Rarely do people ever think of the effects of their actions and those that do almost never change their ways. Luckily, some companies such as Honda, GM and BP are working hard to change people’s attitude towards our environment. They have realized the threat pollution poses and have decided to do something about it—through advertising. Each year these companies raise millions of dollars through advertising for the purpose of environmental research, auto development and public education.
In response to the gas shortage of the 1970s, the first hybrid car was developed. Plans to mass produce these cars were the talk of the automobile industry but as soon as the crisis was over, these notions were quickly dropped. The popularity of hybrid cars and environmental awareness in our culture seems to fluctuate depending on the times—recently making a comeback in 2000 around the time that gas prices started to rise again; when unhappy...

... a very big issue that will affect every person on this planet and if ignored, could have deadly consequences. As far as humans are concerned, the environment is what is keeping us alive so the issue at here at hand should be, without a doubt, our main concern.

Sports Utility Vehicles have long maintained the reputation of being gas guzzlers and detrimental to the environment. In the article, “Why Environmentalists Attack the SUV,” Mr. John Bragg presents the argument that the SUV is a symbol of Americanism. While it is easy to understand his thinking, it is largely based upon subjective reasoning. Conversely, the SUV.org article, “Environmental Double Standards for Sport Utility Vehicles,” postulates that SUV’s represent a paradox to consumers. Additionally, cartoonist, Khalil Bendib takes a drastic approach by overtly stating that American automotive corporations are directly contributing to the degradation of the environment.
Andrew Simms, a policy director and head of the Climate Change Program for the New Economics Foundation in England, presents his argument about the impact SUV’s have on our roadways, and the air we breathe. “Would You Buy a Car That Looked like This? “. The title alone gives great insight on what the article is going to be about, (vehicles). “They clog the streets and litter the pages of weekend colour *supplements. Sport utility vehicles or SUV’s have become badges of middle class aspiration” (Simms 542). Simms opening statement not only gives his opinion on how SUV’s are the new trend, but he also paints a picture of what we see every day driving down our roadways. Simms also compares the tobacco industry’s gap between image and reality to that of SUV’s; stating that the cause and consequences of climate change resemble smoking and cancer. Simms comparison between SUV’s and cigarettes shows how dangerous he believes SUV’s are.
Increasing environmental awareness, coupled with a responsible American government and improved technology, have all contributed to the comeback of low-and zero-emissions vehicles in the US. It remains to be seen whether the automakers and oil companies will once again work to halt this progress, or embrace it as the technology of a more responsible future.
Throughout time gasoline fuel has been the major fuel used in order to power cars. Even today the majority of people who have cars they are typically gasoline powered cars. Although gasoline has been improved throughout time, the world today now needs alternatives to gasoline since it is hurting the world. The world is in need of an alternative that will help the environment. One major and successful alternative is the hybrid car.The creation of the hybrid car will greatly affect the world positively.
The book I chose to read for this book report was Cool It: The Skeptical Environmentalist’s Guide to Global Warning by Bjorn Lomborg. This book was originally published in 2007. Lomborg offered many perspectives on the subject of global warming and climate change, stating that it will cost millions and billions of dollars. However, even with the amount of work and money put into stopping the global warming problem, there may be little impact on the world. Lomborg argues that perhaps humans should start with smaller steps, such as fighting diseases or maintaining a safe, fresh water supply. Doing so could allow a lower death rate and fix the world on a drastic measure. The author believes that with a clear mind and an organized mindset, humans can potentially help the world become a richer and healthy environment.
With a gasoline-fueled vehicle, buying gas to operate your car is a never-ending process. With the high price change of gasoline and oil, operating a gasoline-fueled vehicle tends to be very costly. While there are some types of small gasoline vehicles that get much better gas mileage than larger vehicles, even the most powerful gasoline cars will normally desire a contribution every month. According to some experts the only way a mainstream market for green vehicles wills materlize is with a pronounced and prolonged rise in fuel prices. (Buss, 4)
The majority of people, especially in America, cannot go about their daily lives without a car. Automobiles have instilled themselves in peoples’ lives and shown their usefulness since their debut in 1769. Since then, humans have redesigned and refined the automobile thousands of times, each time making the vehicle more efficient and economical than before. Now as the world approaches an ethical decision to dwarf all others, many people look toward automotives for yet another change. The emergence of the hypercar due to ecological turmoil exemplifies the change the world has demanded. Hypercars alter everything people know about automotives, modern ecology, and fuel efficiency. Not only do hypercars offer a solution to many ecological problems humans are faced with now, they also represent the only logical area for the automotive industry, and by some stretch American society, to expand.
A prevalent issue in today's society is the use of fossil fuels and the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Transportation, deforestation, and technology are all factors associated to climate change. This issue is significant to me due to the fact that I was born and raised in California, and the recent drought in California can be linked to global warming. Every day an excess of CO2 is released, the world is drastically changing. However, there are steps that the public can take to counter the devastation these changes will cause.
“Reducing your heat-trapping emissions does not mean forgoing modern conveniences; it means making smart choices, using energy-efficient products, and understanding which areas of your life generate the most carbon emissions.” (Ten Personal Solutions to Global Warming) A decade ago, global warming was not much of a concern as it is now. No matter how much we are informed about it , we as a society seem to ignore the future disasters that global warming will acquire. Global warming is a “global” dilemma and everyone has an obligation to help reduce emissions.
Climate change is an issue that has become increasingly ubiquitous in all areas of life in recent decades. As population increases, there is a parallel increase in pollution, exacerbating climate change, which not only affects the environment, but also has an impact on human life and business. Climate change is generally thought of as a negative force due to its effects on the environment and its projected repercussions. However, there have been some upshots of climate change that have had positive impacts on business. Climate change presents businesses the opportunity to promote themselves by appealing to the public’s preoccupation with environmental concerns. It also presents opportunities for businesses to capitalize on climate change through entrepreneurship and innovation addressing environmental issues. Furthermore, by adopting ecofriendly practices that are conceived as responses to climate change, businesses can reduce costs of production and operation. As a result of climate change, companies are prompted to adopt sustainable business practices, “taking the goal of sustainability, and translating that into the changes required of an individual organization—changes which maintain the organizations capacity for producing human benefits, including the profitability needed for survival, while optimizing the environmental balance of its operations.” Through this pursuit of sustainable business, companies can benefit from the climate change that plagues the planet, through promoting a “green” image, “green” innovation, and ecofriendly practices. While there are some positive effects of climate change on businesses, these optimistic outcomes do not outweigh the extreme con...
As human beings, we need to respect the environment in which we live. This is important to greater our future and that of others to follow. Very few people realize that their daily behaviors have a direct impact on the environment, the atmosphere in particular. By emitting harmful gasses into the air on a daily basis is one of the main reasons of such climate changes. People notice such changes and yet don't do anything to help the situation. Wee don't realize the risks that such changes in temperature pose. Rather than trying to conserve gas or taking cold showers, we still go on through our daily activities reluctant to change that will in time benefit the earth. By conserving gas and other harmful emissions like oil and electricity we are lessening the risks of global warming. By recognizing the potential risks, it will become easier to find practical solutions.
The seriousness of global warming effects both the environment and the people living in it. The question is how do Americans effect the environment and what can we do to fix it? Americans everyday use automobiles as a form of transportation, and although it may seem harmless, the use of these cars are proving to be detrimental in the end. Author Margaret Kriz (2006) states that, “the vast majority of scientists who study Earth's climate agree that the planet is warming, and they blame the greenhouse gases that accumulate in the a...
The environment is one of the only issues in the world that everyone agrees to protect and fix. The environment does need to be protected, but society focusses on the wrong parts. They focus on the rising CO² levels and the melting of the polar ice caps. The ice caps are not disappearing, so instead of focusing on the ice caps, society should focus on protecting the environment from oil spills, toxic waste spills, and other environmental hazards. The CO² levels are healthy for humans and plant life alike, so instead of the healthy greenhouse gas being blamed for the world problems, maybe we should look at how to fix the rise of the harmful greenhouse gases that are damaging the earth. As a society, we focus on the problems of the least importance. If we spent just a little bit more time on the real problems, maybe the problems would already be
The car has been a symbol of the American mainstream culture since it’s prominent introduction to our society by Henry Ford with his mass-produced Model T, a car built for the masses. From the numerous countertops, hotels, and souvenir stands that dot the scenic landscape of Route 66 to cars speeding their way down the elevated West Side Highway the effects of the car culture although initially meant to be positive have come with more than monetary costs to our planet, and the United States with externalized costs from the social implications to the environmental crisis
There are lots of environmental issues going on globally. The earth faces problems such as pollution, global warming, waste disposal, and loss of biodiversity. These are just a small amount of issues out of the so many. These environmental problems pose an abundant amount of risk to the health of humans and animals. There needs to be a solution to all these problems and that is by informing others, so that way everyone can make the environment a better place.
