Does Playing Competitive Sports Help Or Hinder Students?

There has been a lot of controversy over whether sports help or hinder students, and many questions have been posed as to if they have negative or positive effects on school and if they are worth the time and money spent. Although many experts and researchers say that no good can come from it, playing competitive sports has many more advantages than disadvantages. (2.) In a recent study conducted by the University of Alberta, students were asked about how included and happy they felt based on whether they participated in any type of sports or not. Those surveyed who participated in sports were reportedly happier and less lonely than those who stayed away from them. Others argue that sports, a lot of the time, can impair health and cause too many injuries for it to be worth it. (1.) In a recent youth sports study, researchers found that the number of concussions for kids ages 14-19 has tripled in the last decade. (3.) The CDC did a study on injuries in young kids, and they reviewed almost 208,000 sport/recreation injuries. Though sports do cause injury in kids, many times it s due to bad coaching or on safety rules not being followed properly. R. Dawn Comstock, who helped in the research, said that: “We have an epidemic of obesity in this country, and sports is one of the best ways for kids to incorporate exercise in their lives. Parents can help keep kids safe by making sure they wear all the appropriate protective equipment, and that their protective equipment fits properly and is in good repair.” Sports can be a good way to stay fit, and they can be fun and rewarding if rules are followed to keep it …show more content…

Kids who participate in sports feel better about themselves, learn to work together as a team, get better grades, and stay fit and healthy. Although many think that sports are bad for kids, and have negative effects, there are more advantages to them than there are disadvantages, and playing a sport, no matter what it is, can help students in the long run to achieve great things.
