Advantages of Distributed Operating System Distributed Operating System: A set of independent computers that are joined together, but appear to be a single computer for end user is known as distributed system. The idea behind implementing a distributed operating system is to enhance the performance and ability of a grouped system to process and respond to user actions. Management in distributed operating systems is done by implementing process scheduling activity, multiple processes, the communication and synchronization between running processes and more. The software used to couple the systems can be either tightly or loosely coupled, depending on the need and use of the distributed system’s implementation. A tightly coupled system would have all their individual and shared resources commonly accessible and available to the central system that can authorize the grant based on the need of a system. Whereas in a loosely coupled system, the computers and users are independent of each other and have a limited possibility to cooperate together. Advantages of Distributed Operating Systems Distributed operating systems contain various advantages and especially over monolithic systems and are classified into four main groups 1. Reliability 2. Resource sharing 3. Communication 4. Improved Speeds in Computation Reliability: In distributed operating system if one node fails the remaining nodes provide the system the backup needed. This results in improved reliability and can continue the operation. The enhanced availability of resources can make the distributed system to use multiple communication paths and use redundant resources.
