The ending of Reconstruction and the period known as the Redemption gave birth to the “new Negro.” Gene Jarrett, a CAS associate professor of English at Boston University, defines the “new Negro” as a time “when African Americans were hoping to represent themselves in fresh, progressive ways, whether dealing with politics or culture alone.” He goes on to say, “There was a transition from the old Negro, the plantation slave, to the new Negro, African-Americans who were considered more refined, educated, sophisticated, and involved in the political process” (Ullian 2008). Although there was an overabundance of civil rights activists at the time, there were four men who individually stand out from the rest. Though these four men may not have always agreed with the ideas of one another, one thing is for certain; they all wanted to ultimately see a nation of equality, each believing in a different way of gaining it. These four men are Alexander Crummell, W.E.B. Du Bois, Booker T. Washington, and Marcus Garvey. Though these men all game from different backgrounds, they indeed fought for the same cause.
Alexander Crummell was born to a free family in 1819. Born into a life of activism, Crummell grew up in the house where the first African American newspaper, the Freedoms Journal, was published. Crummell worked with the American Anti-Slavery Society as a child and went on to become the first black student to graduate from Cambridge. It was at Cambridge where Crummell developed his pan-Africanist way of thinking. Pan-Africanists are people who believe that harmony is fundamental to economic, social, and political advancement and intend to unify and uplift people of the African descent. Although no two solutions are exactly alike, the reason for the fight was undoubtedly the same. As for who had the best approach, trying to place myself in the mindset of someone living during the time of these men, I would have say Booker T. Washington. Although accommodation seems like a way of giving up, accepting the situation at the time and trying to better oneself seems a lot more humane to me than fighting and losing lives. This is a topic that could contribute to countless hours, or days, of debate but each person is entitled to their own opinion. Nonetheless it is still safe to say that, however one looks at it or whoever’s approach one may believe is best, these four men can be considered the founding fathers to African American freedom.

Alexander Crummell, an Episcopalian priest, professor, and lecturer, set out to analyze and discuss “The Race Problem in America.” This piece was written in 1888, following the Reconstruction period after he had traveled to Europe and Africa, lecturing on American Slavery and African-American and African issues. Crummell, when not working outside of the country, resided in the North at various places in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, where many of the countries African-American intellectuals lived at the time. As a professor, lecturer, and priest, the intended audience were members of the society who were literate, Christian, and for the time period, more radically thinking. “The lord shall raise-up coloured historians in succeeding generations, to present the crimes of this nation to the then gazing world.” David Walker was born in the confines of white America, but his vision expanded far beyond those limits. His view reached deep into the future of black people. From 1829 until his death in 1830, David Walker was the most controversial, and most admired black person in America. Walker believed in all manner of social relations in that self-reliance was most preferable rather than dependence on others. He felt that it is essential to self-determination. Walker argued that freedom was the highest human right ordained by God, in that African people should raise their voice in defense of their own interest and assume responsibility for speaking on behalf of their freedom. Hence, David Walker’s Appeal was born in 1829 (Turner 3).
Gilmore argues that African American male political participation between 1890 and 1898 represented a movement toward greater inclusion. She claims that African American males in politics strove for the balance of power between political parties in North Carolina, and that the Populist-Republican victory in 1896 kept African American votes in contention and maintained some African American men in political office for a short period of time. There was an agreement between African Americans and whites that the “Best Men,” middle class African Americans, were to be the only African Americans to hold office. This was because by being dubbed the “Best Men,” they had met certain standards and were suitable for office according to the white politicians. The “Best Men” clashed with the South’s “New White Man,” who sought to re-monopolize voting rights and political power, as well as to completely dominate African Americans. Gilmore attributes the “New White Man’s” goals to these men’s bitterness towards their fathers who were blamed for the defeat in the Civil War, southern underdevelopment, and black progress. Nonetheless, African American men rapidly increased power in politics when many positions became publicly elected.
When it all comes down to it, one of the greatest intellectual battles U.S. history was the legendary disagreement between Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois. This intellectual debate sparked the interest of the Northerners as well as the racist whites that occupied the south. This debate was simply about how the blacks, who just gained freedom from slavery, should exist in America with the white majority. Even though Washington and DuBois stood on opposite sides of the fence they both agreed on one thing, that it was a time for a change in the treatment of African Americans. I chose his topic to write about because I strongly agree with both of the men’s ideas but there is some things about their views that I don’t agree with. Their ideas and views are the things that will be addressed in this essay.
In September of 1829, David Walker wrote and published APPEAL to the Colored citizens of the World, the first published work that fight against slavery and racism come from a Black man in the United States. It was one of the most inspirational political statements of the nineteenth century. The eighty-two pages pamphlet made an impassioned case against slavery and the racial discrimination.

“The New Negro” as described by Alain Locke is seeking social justice, however he is doing so in a way different from the various forms of resistance that preceded him. Locke describes a shift from radicalism in the fight for social justice to a need to build a relationship between races. The “New Negro” has come to the realization that assimilation into American culture is not a viable answer; therefore he has decided to build his own culture in collaboration with American culture. The construction of this culture became known as The New Negro Movement or The Harlem Renaissance. This was the attempt of the black community to birth for themselves a status quo in which they were no longer defined by their oppressors’ views. It was with in
Richard Wright, hero to the black American, was one of the first men to fight for equality among blacks and whites. In his writings, Richard expresses to white people what kind of hardships all young negroes go through and how this lifestyle affect their behavior. For it is our surroundings that often influence the way we react depending on the situation. After Wrights death may other novelists and authors were inspired by him and continued the fight for equality, among them James Baldwin, Ralph Ellison, Ann Petry, and Chester Himes. Although the final chapters of his life closed many years ago, Richard's hopes and dreams today remain an open book.

Booker T. Washington Booker T. Washington was a great leader. He was all for helping the black community become stronger. His goal was very hard to achieve considering the period in which he lived. America, during Washington's time under reconstruction. The Civil War was over and blacks were, by law, equal to any other human being.
The time has come again to celebrate the achievements of all black men and women who have chipped in to form the Black society. There are television programs about the African Queens and Kings who never set sail for America, but are acknowledged as the pillars of our identity. In addition, our black school children finally get to hear about the history of their ancestors instead of hearing about Columbus and the founding of America. The great founding of America briefly includes the slavery period and the Antebellum south, but readily excludes both black men and women, such as George Washington Carver, Langston Hughes, and Mary Bethune. These men and women have contributed greatly to American society. However, many of us only know brief histories regarding these excellent black men and women, because many of our teachers have posters with brief synopses describing the achievements of such men and women. The Black students at this University need to realize that the accomplishments of African Americans cannot be limited to one month per year, but should be recognized everyday of every year both in our schools and in our homes.
The differences of their philosophies were clearly shown in their writings—Booker T. Washington’s “Up from slavery” and Du Bois’s “The Souls of Black Folk”. Before we analyze the similarities and differences of both of the leaders, we have to look at their early life experiences as it can be an important factor on how and where they get their inspiration for their philosophies. Booker T. Washington was an influential leader during his time and a philosopher that always addressed the philosophy of self-help, racial unity and accommodation. He had preached and urged all the black people to simply accept the discrimination that they got and asked them to work hard to gain material prosperity (Painter 169). In his
Du Bois examines the years immediately following the Civil War and, in particular, the Freedmen's Bureau's role in Reconstruction. He feels the Bureau's failures were due not only to Southern opposition and "national neglect," but also to mismanagement and courts that were biased.
