Have advances in technology helped to create a lazy, detached society? The truth is it has. It becomes more
and more advanced that the inventors do not even know what to do. They run out of ideas but they make a new one
and then ten more come out of just that one idea. Advances in technology have helped to create a lazy, detached society
because, people say: why do this if we have it all in our hands, everything is already there.
People think it is cool to have all the gadgets that are new and advanced and easier to do things with, but it is
actually making the society more lazy. For example, the society now has e-mail and instant messengers to commun-
icate with, they do not want to write letters anymore, that shows that the society has become lazier. Since the society has
this to help them communicate they send an e-card through e-mail rather than making a letter of their own. Also instead
of driving down to a little family get together, the instant messenger gets in the way because it seems easier to communi-
cate with. Another example, is that now a days the society has telephones, cellphones and even camera phones to help
everyone communicate.When someone invites another person to a birthday party the person that gets invited makes
up an excuse saying they can not go so they just call and say Happy Birthday. Also when someone wants to meet
someone else they just text messages or call each other instead of going for a walk. These are some examples that really
reveal how lazy and detached the society has became as technology advances.
Paul Goldberger explores this theme in his essay, “Disconnected Urbanism,” where he explains how cell phones have rendered public spaces, such as urban streets, less public. Likewise, because of cell phones and other electronic devices, humans have grown lazy and impatient. Nonetheless, Goldberger explains, “Remember when people communicated with Europe by letter and it took a couple of weeks to get a reply? Now we’re upset if we have to send a fax because it takes so much longer than e-mail” (558). This demonstrates how Americans have grown accustomed to swift communication, thus leading them to become lazy or comatose; if an individual is attempting to create plans they may prefer to send out a text message rather than a phone call since it is a rapid communication method. However, when conversing with another individual via text message and that individual does not reply immediately, the person may become agitated or anxious. This is a negative result of progress which could affect humans, especially when considering a job; a grand array of individuals may apply for a job and several may be seeking a reply immediately, however, that is highly unlikely. The feeling of thin paper in between your fingers as you flip the page and even the sound of a pen roughly scratching against paper are simple pleasures that the next generation will not experience. Our society’s dependence on technology is taking its toll on people 's minds and dimming the world’s future. Our intelligence and innovation are slowly being wiped away. With a lack of basic human knowledge, a weak education system, and a dim future, our dependence on technology is creating an ignorant society.
Technology has changed our world dramatically over the last several decades. Several generations before us did not have air conditioning, telephones, television much less internet. However, today we have access to all of this and more. Technological advances have not only made changes in how we communicate, but also in how everyday tasks are done. We already have automated machines designed to make life easier for us: vacuum cleaners, car washes, dishwashers, laundry machines, litter-box scoopers, etc. We have many automated technologies that we can set to our personal preference, such as Tv and radio stations, thermostats, lighting, etc. Bill Gates even has a feature in his house that will switch out different paintings depending on who is standing in the room. We humans like shortcuts and simple luxuries, but with technology taking away so much of our workload we are enabling ourselves to be lazy. We are already dependent on technology. In the least, we are already severely addicted to it. How many hours are spent wasted glued to our cell phones, watching Tv or surfing the web? How would you communicate with your friends and family without telephones or email? How would we cook without our gas/electric stoves and microwaves? How would we store our food without refrigeration? How would we see at night? How would we get around? Obviously, we are already in over our heads with our relationship to
America, the land of the free and home of the lazy, as a nation we are no longer as motivated and energized as we once were. We continually design new inventions to make life easier; to make tasks take less energy and less focus. While these gadgets and life hacks may make life easier for us, they have helped us to the point now where we are dangerously lazy. These things are not the cause of our sluggishness we are, merely a symptom of the disease. Students struggle to finish all their work in school, and an extremely productive day at the office is starting to be a thing of legend.
There are always two sides to a story, correct? This includes technology itself. We all know that technology has its good times and then it has its bad times. Some of the common things that most people have is a cell phone. The good thing about a cell phone is the convenience of having a phone handy when you need it. They also felt that their relationships with their family at home dropped 4% in the past year. The opinions vary, but they are needed to show how technology is affecting different people.

While I do agree with faster production and less work, I can not allow this degenerative spiral of laziness to continue, it is out of control. These devices are in most daily activities ranging from waking up to an alarm clock to watching the news before going to bed. All of these computerized facets of our society help to increase our daily productivity and help us do whatever it is we need to accomplish in the day in the easiest way possible.
